Chapter 6 - Rookie Flights - 1 Eve 16 - Launchpad 1A - T-4 Minutes to Haven 5

Well, let’s see if I can not drop my camera this time… the rookie’s counting on me to get footage of the launch. You had better not drop that. Mind if I sit here? Hey, Val! Yeah, I’m not waiting on anyone for the launch or the empty seat, so go ahead. Do you know how the analysis for the new planets is going? It’s going well. We’ve determined that one of the gas giant’s moons probably has an atmosphere. Which one? Pretty sure it’s the one in the rings… don’t quote me on that, though. I’ll try… *T Minus Thirty Seconds to Haven 5* Good luck, rookie… don’t screw the pooch. *radio crackles* “J-Jeb? Can you hear me?”

“Loud and Clear, rookie. What do all the fancy dials in the capsule say?”

“One says ‘On the ground’ and the rest say ‘Go’.”

“That should be right. You got 10 seconds… 8.. 7.. 6.. Krakenspeed. 3.. 2.. 1..”

*Loud roaring begins from bottom of spacecraft*

“Wheee- *radio crackles as spacecraft passes out of range*”

*sighs* He’s having a good time. Yeah… Let’s see how long it lasts.

Spongebob Announcer Voice: Three Hours Later

“You have a good time, rookie?”

“IT WAS AMAZING!!!! I LOVED IT!!!” *laughter*

“Well that’s good! Let’s go see what Gene has to say about the future of the Program, shall we?” *pushes open auditorium door to once again find a packed room*

“Dang… should’ve gotten here earlier. Standing room only…”

*Gene walks onto stage and taps mic* “Is this on? Yes? Good. If you’re in the media, I don’t want to hear a single question until 10 days has passed. By that time, I hope most of you will have forgotten your questions.” *nervous laughter* “On to the topic at hand, however. Today’s flight marks the end of the atmospheric launches in this space program. Don’t worry, we will still be creating planes, but they are no longer the main focus here.” *clears throat* “Three suborbital launches, the Daybreak series, launched atop the new Bluestone 1 rocket, followed by a new era of K.R.A.S.H.E.D., orbital flight, codename Dawn. We have currently not decided what kerbonauts will be flying in which order, but we will let you know when we have come to a decision. And remember what I said… no questions until Eve 26!” *disgruntled murmuring from reporters* “I mean it! Now, begone!”

*end entry J10-Alpha-4*

Kerballing’s Note: Trying out a new format for dialogue because the old one was just taking too long to have to reformat every time… @Lo Var Lachland and @Barzon Kerman will also be providing photos in the future (might be in the chapters, they might post them in this thread separately. ;D Don’t know yet.) and their skills are pretty dang good. (This is when you guys can post some of your screenshots in the thread!)

Editor’s Note: No you.

Shoosh, @Salmon. Our "regularly scheduled uploads" are being cancelled... finals and crazy schedules are interfering BIG TIME!

Hey guys... super sorry about the long wait! If all goes right, though, Chapter 7 is this week, and then I'm planning on making a bit of a time jump after that to the first Mun landing... Chapter 8 would be a quick cram-in of everything that occurred between the suborbital hop and the Mum landing.

Before this chapter gets started, I’m just going to say that this is ENTIRELY third-person--again, trying new writing styles to see if I can find something that works with my limited schedule. Sorry about all the bouncing around! Now, TO THE BOOK (novella… whatever)!

Chapter 7 - SPAAAAAAAAAAACE - 1 Eve 64 - T-3 Minutes until Artisan 6 - KBK Broadcast Booth

“Ladies and Gentlekerbs, I’m Robert Kerman from the KBK broadcast team, live at the hopefully soon to be christened Kerbin Space Center, Observatory, and Museum. Sitting on the launchpad behind me is the Artisan 6, sitting atop the Center’s very first Daybreak rocket--featuring 2 Hammer solid rocket boosters from the Proximae series and a new X-LF-1 Swivel liquid fuel engine. Launching in less than 120 seconds now, the always stoic Jim Kerman, the only victim of a rapid unscheduled disassembly in these last two months, is sitting on-board his spacecraft undergoing his final checks. The landing and recovery team is ready in the Western Sea. The launch team is ready here at the Center. The pilot is ready. All systems are go. One minute to launch. The boosters will burn for 20 seconds before they drop away and the brand new Swivel will fire for the first time in flight. 30 seconds. Gene and his seasoned team of mission controllers are doing their last checks of the rocket. 15 seconds.  10… 9… 8… All systems go… 6… 5… 4… Krakenspeed… 2… 1… Liftoff!” *Extremely loud grumble emits from the rocket as it rises into the sky*
All 264,371 Kerbals watching the live TV feed see his mouth fall open. “Wow… that’s beautiful… 5 seconds to booster separation. And that is clean! And the liquid engine is online and functional! Ladies and Gentlekerbs, Jim Kerman is going to SPAAAAAAAAAACE!!!” *laughter from camera crew* “Hey I’m being serious!”

“And now, the rocket has reached 45 kilometers, and the liquid engine has cut off! The capsule is peaking at 85 kilometers, will splash down in the Western Sea, before being picked up and returned to the KSC! The capsule has separated from the booster, so let’s go live to Jim Kerman in Artisan 6. Jim, it’s Robert Kerman from the Kerbin Broadkast Kompany. How was the launch in the capsule?”

“Good to hear your voice, Rob. The launch was nice and smooth, the only hiccups and jolts coming from the SRBs and their separation from the rest of the vehicle. The engineers have built a beautiful craft.”

“You’re closing in on the end of atmosphere. 69… 70! Congratulations, Jim! Any first words from the first man in space?”

“On behalf of the entire staff of the newly-christened Kerbal Space Program, Kerbalkind will travel among the planets, then the stars. Man, that is one heck of a view. It’s truly beautiful.”

“Well, Jim, we’ll let you enjoy the rest of your flight in peace, and may you always honor the soldiers gone before you.”

“And you as well. Thank you.”

“Ladies and gentlekerbs this is Robert Kerman from the Kerbin Broadkast Kompany, signing off. Farewell, and gentle sailings!”

Editor's Note: Robert was originally called Bob and had a surname other than Kerman. I will never forget this moment... Never.

Kerballing’s Note: This was a fun chapter to write, and I foresee great things in this series’ immediate future. If anyone wants to chime in with a possible direction for the series, you can DM me on the forum! As @Salmon said, Robert Kerman was originally named Bob Kostas, a reference to the CBS anchor in the 60's who covered all of the big launches. Kerballing, signing off! Gentle sailings!
