Any use in LV-30 and other no gimbal engines?

But one other application I don't see very often around here -- using the small radial engines to act as verniers for the Reliant / Kodiak / Dart

I've been using Cubs for a while in this role, and I've started using a pair of Twitches when I don't need as much thrust, which actually is most of the time.  Haven't tried a spider for that yet.  Like you say, they work for attitude control and don't burn enough fuel to be an issue on the launch.   My standard 2.5m launcher actually has been switched from four AV-R8 fins to a pair of Twitches now.  I'll step up to cubs when it needs a little more thrust, but 90% of the time it works great as is.

Upgradable engines were very loudly argued against by the community.

I was there and don't remember that for part upgrades.  I do remember it for 5 star Pilots improving ISP.  I do imagine the craft sharing crowd getting out the pitchforks over it, but I tend to ignore such complaints.

Never using the system for anything (e.g. upgrading "old" probe cores with new SAS capabilities as they are unlocked in other probe cores along the techtree) is sad though.

I too don't recall this. I recall some friction from those very people but I don't remember it being an uproar, just a low grumble.

I expect Squad dropped it because it quickly became more complicated than they were expecting/ready for. And who knows Squad 2.0 may not feel so squeamish about it.

I use it for boosters or as the main stage lifting engine of smaller budget rockets, usually. It's a disposable engine for me that is punchy and cheap and useful.

This, they are obvious for stuff like your first Mun landing and stuff like that.
Also use them as extra engines for my standard base it need higher trust to get into orbit and no room for 2.5 meter engines and they works well enough.
