Is it possible to have 3 parts to Eeloo? (MAYBE?)

I am just wondering. Is it possible to have a 3 part craft to Eeloo? I Imagine it would right? I mean just the right combo and it could work right?

Well... We can analyze that a bit with math. You gotta have an engine, so that's one part. You gotta have a fuel tank, so that's two... unless you run the Twin Boar. You need control, which is another part. If you use a probe core in order to minimize mass, then you need comms as well. If you make it manned, you don't need comms, but mass won't be ideal.

Looking at the twin- boar, it can generate an absolute maximum 4,114 m/sec of DV from the pad. Figure 3,400 m/sec to orbit. That leaves 714 m/sec, nowhere near enough to reach the Mun, let alone Eeloo.

If you use the biggest tank in the game as your second part, that leaves a hair over 5 km/sec, or 1,700 m/sec from orbit. That's barely enough (in theory) to make Moho, but nowhere near enough to make Eeloo.

So no. You can't get to Eeloo with just 3 parts.

  1. Mk1 Command Pod
  2. KAL-1000 Controller
  3. Starshot-32

Of course, this is Kraken drive, one which would make it extremely difficult to get an intercept with Eeloo, let alone actually land.  But I suppose if you modified the Force and Launch Velocity values as you went along, it might be possible in under 32 shots.  I know I can make it to circularized orbit of Kerbin in 3 shots.  :D

I bet there's a grav-assist route that uses Mun-Eve-Jool to get to Eeloo with this.  Lighter command module could help too

There is.  The calculations don't include the Mun, and there may well be some advantage on repeated flyby assists (such as the K-E-K-K-J route uses), but here are the top five for delta-V, starting from a 75 km Kerbin orbit:

Flight Delta-V Total Travel Time Departure Eve Encounter Jool Encounter Eeloo Encounter
1 3401 11.3 years Y2 : D2 : H0 Y3 : D80 : H2.8 Y6 : D347 : H3.8 Y13 : D135 : H5.7
2 3453 11.5 years Y2 : D6 : H0 Y3 : D80 : H2.8 Y6 : D419 : H2.1 Y13 : D232 : H0.7
3 3460 10.1 years Y1 : D404 : H0 Y3 : D65 : H2.8 Y5 : D384 : H0.7 Y12 : D29 : H2.6
4 3482 11 years Y1 : D420 : H0 Y3 : D73 : H0 Y6 : D239 : H2.1 Y12 : D425 : H4.3
5 3506 11.7 years Y2 : D10 : H0 Y3 : D80 : H2.8 Y7 : D51 H0 Y13 : D313 : H1.1

Looks like you have just set yourself a challenge.

Your time starts...  now.

there's better than twin boar.

A mammoth engine under an S4-512 tank has roughly 6000 m/s of vacuum deltaV, with enough thrust to lift off. It can therefore reach LKO with well over 2000 m/s. It should be able to get an eeloo intercept without even a need for gravity assists. with gravity assists, it may actually be able to land on eeloo.

speaking of gravity assists, i'm not aware of any (remotely practical) way to use them to reduce capture speed around Moho to less than 2500 m/s. Or to reduce the price of getting from moho to Eve below 1000 m/s. So, gravity assists all you like, you should still need 3500 m/s for a moho orbit mission. you may use gravity assists to get a free moho intercept, and once you go moho to eve, you can then use eve assist to go anywhere. but you need that 3500. Please prove me wrong because i must run a moho mission starting from low mun orbit and returning to low ike orbit with 4500 m/s.

I would think that a Boar, A nuke, and a command pod would be it.

Dr. Kerbal,

You could try modeling that in the VAB. I seriously doubt that it'd outperform a Boar, Mk.3 large rocket fuel tank, and a command pod tho'. It's basically trading away 50t of fuel for roughly twice the Isp and 2t additional mass.

Well. I will do some test and see. The craft should have at least 4,000m/s Dv

I found a combination that gives 5,300 m/d v. 2,500 for obit and left with 2,800 m/dv. Gonna have to find a better combination. But I think you could take this to Bop or Pol.

I must be misunderstanding you. You're saying you achieved low Kerbin orbit while expending only 2,500 m/sec DV?

Yup. This is probably my most efficient gravity turn and menuvers to orbit. It can sometimes cost up to 3 km/s of dv and even 4km.
