Cooperative VAB Designer

Recommended Posts

One thing I've been curious about is a possible multiplayer feature that would allow multiple players to design vessels (stages) at the same time in the VAB.

For everyone one person would work on the rocket while another world build the payload - at the same time, in the same VAB room.

This feature would also allow more experienced players to teach beginners how to design and build correctly.

Has anyone seen any clue about this feature?

Haven't heard anything about this, much like any other MP features. This could get annoying pretty quick, but would definitely be helpful for showing newer players how rockets and planes should be built. Definitely would help foster cooperative play styles.

This would be easiest by using any of the already available screen sharing options out there but I realize you probably want more than one person to be able to "drive"at one time; multiple mouse cursors, multiple undo stacks, multiple tracking of modes (placement, offset, rotation, action group editing etc).  I don't think this is realistic at all and seriously doubt they went this direction.  It would be a nearly complete rewrite from scratch.

All the mods for the editor would also have to become many times more complex, and so more buggy

I like the idea, but I can see it being an absolute 'pig' to get to work reliably for all the reasons @darthgently mentions.

Perhaps assigning a single 'asset' per player might just be viable, as in - Player A builds one sub assembly Player B builds another etc .

What I can imagine is the illusion of being in the same workspace but really each player is in their own editor, but read only visuals from other players editors is rendered in one's editor. So one can see what another player is doing as if they were in same editor, but really they are in their own space.  Each player would be working at the center of their building and other players build would appear offset from center somewhere else.   Mods wouldn't even have to know they were even "there"

In fact, the illusion approach might even be doable in a mod depending on how the game allows access for mods to underlying MP functionality

That's basically how I see it working. There could be the possibility with the players permission, for the other player to edit the craft or at least add a ghosting effect for suggested changes to their craft. Again, with their permission of course.

Something like Hangar Extender would make a lot of sense if several players were involved

Throw in cloud based shared craft folders, especially Subassemblies, and it would not be hard for multiple players to work on separate elements of a single craft design.  I like it
