commenting so I can agree with the posts above! it would make kethane mining operations on Laythe waaay easier!

Not really. The view is very restricted once you get under water. It forces a top down kinda view. Off-shore resource drilling is best done from a floating platform and lowering the drill down via cable.

IfiniteDice and his team were working on subs, but I think decided to wait to further the project till the underwater camera was made to support using such a vehicle.

There are some really old submarine parts around which do somewhat work, they'll need a fair bit of searching to dig out though. I was going to attempt one that worked with a pair of engines which converted water to a superdense "ballast" liquid & back again, but I never got round to it. It'd probably work better with a custom dll rather than abusing the default electrical output module for engines like I usually do ( or alternatively you could probably rig it with the Kethane mod ).

yeah I do remember seeing something like that a while ago... but I'm not sure if it would still work. I'll be home in a bit and I'll try messing with the game to see if I can enter negative values in the HLEnvelopePartModule and put it onto a fuel tank.

@Hooligan Labs: any way you could code HLEnvelopePartModule to accept negative values if it doesn't work? Could you also model a HL variable buoyancy tank? I know it's asking a lot from you, but I really dig the depth your work adds to the game.

Yeah I ran into that problem. HOWEVER with Lazor attachable hull cameras, I believe this becomes a non issue. I haven't tried it yet. Also, if I IVAd in the Mk1 cockpit, I would assume it would look like normal IVA- it would look cooler anyways than a following camera.

*edit. lowering a drill into the water doesn't work- it bounces up like anything else that touches the water :(

not if you put a weight on it....It does work, I have done it myself and have screenshots from testing. I have drilled on Kerbin in 1200m of water and on Laythe in 800m.

Part of said testing was droping unmaned probes into the sea...thats how I found out how constrictive the camera is down there.

Try editing the drill's buoyancy. Or use engines to push down your rig to the seafloor, and then eject a KAS grappling hook to attach to it. Use the winch to pull yourself down or let buoyancy take you back up.

No need for all that, it takes 36tons to effectively sink a single large kethane drill. The weights I used for testing were made with Landos part geberator. I have since made some myself.

Firespitter electrical engines and Lazor camera it is then :D fun project when I get home...

That fixed camera mod could be used to get around that.

No it can't. That was my thought too, I use lazor systems mod. But it does not work like you think. There is NO underwater to look at. The only 'water' there is in game is a thin surface layer to make it look like the ocean is full.

Camera views (no matter how deep you are) appear as if your on the beach looking at the water. IVA view much the same.

The only help a camera does for submersibles is to view terrain right in front of you.

Infinite Dice has already made a badass sub, but didn't release it because of how restrictive and drab the underwater camera and graphics are.

Is there a wiki explaining the parts of the Airship mod, what they do, and how best to use them?

I'm confused on the use of... everything but the inflatable parachutes.

In my head I'm thinking of a Cargo Class Airship that can haul stuff from Planet A to Planet B. But I have no idea how to build something like that, except a box made out of structural panels, attached to a inflatable parachute (I think like such a noob...).

It sounds like underwater is not really worth exploring right now. A shame!

But you see something like this and think it's possible...

I should do a FAQ. I'll see about posting it to the front page soon.

Its very possible, just not very fun due to crappy view.

I have gotten this badboy down to 1.3km depth, but its almost impossible to manuver down there, and even with lazor cams the view is garbage....

eWNb5hG.png

Its kinda cheaty, has huge empty tanks and generators that create liquidfuel for negative ballast.

I've only built Kerrestrial airships, most used one was to recover returned ships/broken down rovers. The problem I forsee with getting one into orbit is mostly the huge drag in the upper atmosphere - I've not worked out how people get blimps to Duna yet. You could certainly do one with the completely deflatable envelopes - I made a VTOL aircraft using those, literally by attaching two to the top of the aircraft. If you want cargo bays look at the TT Mk4 fuselage, or the B9 Aerospace mods.

After Hooligan posted that vid it made me want to build the HaxsSub MkII, to bring you pictures of the deep blue:

I'm right now trying to drive to the airstrip island =P

edit: A man died under the ocean today....died in the name of science! Let us all bow our heads for Bob Kerman, brave submarine test pilot.

But you see something like this and think it's possible...

offshore

For me, it's not really about exploring the bottom. It's about being able to make an easy kethane submarine for my future floating refueling station on Laythe. KhaosCorp mentioned that s/he uses an offshore platform that sinks the kethane drill which is a great solution, but I want to try a super mobile solution to my logistics challenge.

I like all the designs, including the recovery craft!

Hm, camera controls look straightforward enough...

https://github.com/Anatid/XML-Documentation-for-the-KSP-API/blob/master/FlightCamera.cs

Though it may be one of those things where something that seems obvious is totally messed up when you try to use it. :)

It could be worth a shot if I get some time. I'll talk to the #kspmodders on esper about it.

A submersible was actually my first idea for off-shore drilling. I changed to the platform/boat idea because its actually more mobility. Fastest I have gotten any submersible vehicle is 6m/s....my drilling boat can make @ 34m/s fully loaded (fully loaded is 400k units of kethane btw).

I think one of the major issues with this idea is the physics. Water in KSP does not behave like it should, nor the parts in water.

edit:

Bob died because I decided it was time to see how fast the sub could go =P

not quite shure if this is the thread to do this in, but i am having some issues with the GUI for the balloons, i have B9 areospace, Mech Jeb, ISA mapsat, Crew Manifest, H.O.M.E startpack, K.A.S. , Firespitter, HL Airships, and KW rocketry. the parts show up for the airship mod, but the GUI seems not to be functioning properly.

Did an Jool landing with the new balloons, they took the rocket up to 50 km, that was impressive. Had so huge lift I had to be carefull inflating going down and also going up as they generated enough lift to rip the lander in pieces.

Previous I did an Eve sample return.

This is the entire craft from LKO,

lander below the Eve lander is for landing back on kerbin, do an Gilly mision in the same opperation.

Ship for Jool system sample return.

The Tylo lander failed, a luck as I would not have enough fuel to do Bop and Pol and return without the fuel in the lander. It lacked both sas/ asas and mechjeb. The bottom lander is for kerbin landing. I was a bit stupid, should have made the upper stage of the Tylo lander reusable.

Just want to say how much I love this mod and share one of my current projects that I am making with it!

This is my Kethane Transport Blimp. I still have to decide how I'm going to move it around and steer it but the basic design is finished.

Not sure yet if it works for 0.21, but the firespitter prop engines are the best for airships. I use em as main drive system on 100% of my airships.
