How do I get ladders to survive aero-braking?

I want to use aero braking. The ladders tend to explode. Is there a way to protect them from the heat?

Huh. I don't remember ever having this problem. What does your design look like? Is the heat shield not covering the ladder?

I copied the ladders to a new directory and made my own high temperature ladders by changing:

maxTemp = 2000 //= 3200      to    maxTemp = 4000 //= 5200

I'll see if that works.

putting them in less exposed parts of the spacecraft may help. use a retractable version that, when retracted, is behind some more tolerant part

In all seriousness just put the ladders somewhere where the heat can't reach. Use the retractable ladders too.
