Sigh.  [I ain't puttin' it in italic parentheses either.]

About the City of Heroes Shutdown.

TL;dr version:  Attempts to stop the Shutdown of City of Heroes in 2012 didn't change things one bit either way.  (Successful protests only work on topic of greater public interest, need to find ways to hurt, and then still take many many years.  And often doesn't work anyhoo.)

The longer version (it ain't that long).  Set a spell...

First, a meme to lighten the mode.

Just before the Labour Day long weekend in 2012, on August 31st, NCsoft announced that City of Heroes--despite being profitable--would be shut down effective the end of November 30th that same year.

I won't go through the details of all the efforts to avert this disaster or buy the game from NCsoft.  It was widespread with many significant people speaking up.

It didn't change things one bit.  (Successful protests only work on topic of greater public interest, need to find ways to hurt, and then still take many many years.  And often doesn't work anyhoo.)

I was logged in on November 30th.  Playing the game as if it was the last time I'd ever play City of Heroes.  Because we though it was the end.  Shutdown.

I won't go into the Dark Times.

Unknown to most, this was not the end of City of Heroes.

In 2019 March and April, the existence of a secret City of Heroes server became public knowledge.  Many complex things happened.  The important thing is an organization to support an open City of Heroes game was set up.

On April 24th, 2019, Homecoming City of Heroes launched.  Things developed.  Negotiations went on with NCsoft in the background.

in January 2024, it was announced that Homecoming had been given a licence to run a not-for-profit City of Heroes game.

FYI, City of Heroes yet lives. For a  long while, only as a private server for a select few. Then the server code was leaked and public servers went up. NCSoft apparently okayed it.

Mostly stopped playing. Never did buy KSP2 or follow it's updates. Didn't even know about any of the drama until I just happened to look at a review on Steam yesterday. Been away from the KSP community for so long, I actually lost all my login info and can't retrieve it; so here I am in a new login. (Edit: holy carp, I made this new login three years ago!)

I will forever love this game. It has been a huge part of my life. All of you beautiful people are great. Thanks for being great.

Winterowl's Aircraft Emporium loves all of you.

Woah! Wait, are you TheWinterOwl? As in the creator of the original tail connector parts?

There're places for harsh measures against bad company policies on a Society - but this, definitively, is not one of them.

I will pitch in on harassment being a very bad idea.

But to be clear, ...if -

I see that the side bar of the forum homepage has been updated to now feature community highlights, mods, and challenges instead of developer updates. Nice!

I'm curious if we can anticipate any further changes to the site's structure in the future. I hope that the forum continues to boost activity within the KSP modding scene as that seems to be the most active area.

The technically inclined members of the team are tinkering with stuff. We're being very cautious because we only have partial access to some of these settings and we don't want to mess anything up. So may be more changes or may not, depending on how the tinkering goes. If you like what we've done so far, thank @adsii1970, @Deddly, and @Anth

Thanks! I've been watching a lot of videos about the software. It's pretty straightforward when it comes to what I can do with the block editor. All I am doing is playing around with the formatting blocks available, adding things to what was once the vast, empty right column for those who use the PC version of the website.  All of my stuff is cosmetic, which you've pointed out. I couldn't handle the out-of-date dev updates for KSP2 any longer and decided to see what I could do. In the future, here are some things I am going to try to figure out:

  • A block containing the forum "tag cloud": a dynamic and automagically updating tag area that identifies the most common tags for forum posts within the last sixty days and displays them. This would allow the forum member to select posts that have used that tag to display.
  • A block containing the six most active forum games.

I'm open to suggestions if anyone else would like to see a particular block added, provided the forum software supports it.

It's the easy stuff compared to what @Deddly and @Anth have been doing "under the hood," so to speak.

Thank you so much; it means a lot.
