Despotism – considered the lowest political development.

A single man rules with absolute authority or power.

No codification of laws

Not necessarily hereditary.

Monarchy – development of sole ruler with absolute power.

Laws and decrees are codified

Not necessarily hereditary

Utilizes a system of “royal power” to appoint specialists that oversee trade, religion and science, military, and in some cases, a sub-court system.

Close connection between civil and religious authorities; the right of the king is placed by deities or a singular deity.

Theocracy – similar to a monarchy but utilizes a system of priests and high priests to act as king: pontifex pro deus,  pontifex maximus deus, vicar regem pro deus,  or stantes rex regem pro deus.

Codified religious law becomes absolute authority for civil law and criminal justice systems.

Creates a hierarchy of clergy with specific oversight tasks similar to a royal court.

Constitutional monarchy/Limited monarchy:  Retains some of the basics of monarchy with the exception that royal power is limited by a set of laws or charter.

May have a standing legislature or parliament that balances royal power.

Ministers serve as official liaisons between royal family and the legislative body.

Feudalism – a system of legal and military obligations created through the use of land holdings and appointments that revolve around three relationships:  lord, vassals, and fiefdoms (property rights).

“The vassal of my vassal is not my vassal”

Common in the Middle Ages

Republic - a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.

Although we do know that the Greeks did experiment with this form of government, most never lasted beyond a hundred years.

Plato’s Republic not only chronicles the benefits of a republic but also catalogs the inherent problems with it.

Introduction to concepts

Democracy – a government ruled by the majority; mob rule.

Under a pure democracy, government and the supreme power of it is vested directly through a defined citizenry and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system elections.

Democracy naturally has an absence of an elite ruling class and is based on social custom and tradition where only those deemed most responsible are allowed to participate in the franchise.

Civilizations and their cultures, by their very nature are suspicious of outside influences

Yes, working on the stuff for the introductory lecture for World Civ...
