What did you do in KSP1 today?

Downloaded SCANsat and did full scans (other than the BTDT) of Kerbin. With initial landings on the Mun and Minmus, now looking to expand the program into more landings and potentially base placement.

This also makes interplanetary probes more useful so the fairly limited program that's been run so far (with a successful probe sitting perched on Duna and one failed landing at Eve) will get a kick along.

Which reminds me, must get the Alarm Clock mod...

I went back to duna to scout for possible base sites.

I love the timing on this one, got to see the solar panels from the transfer stage break off

And after dropping the breaking stage (because as it turns out 17 chutes is enough for a 2 ton vessel) I landed, popped the top and now time to explore.

Landing approch for my hopefully returnable lander:

Can see in this picture that the back right wheel was the only thing to brake upon landing and not bad to have that much fuel left too:

And here is Jeb by the lander part for the rover which barely had enough juice to right itself:

Reason for the wheels on the top is just in case I roll over. But other then that. I'm hoping to use the wheels to gain enough speed to jump off a hill to save a bit of fuel. Since the wheels are supposed to be able to take 60 m/s before having a blow out. Did sort of test it out on Kerbin so it should work better upon the Mün and Minmus.

More playing with Nova Punch SRBs. Built the SRB voyager launcher. It hit escape velocity. The big center core no longer goes supersonic in the lower atmosphere. The rocket is stable with braces needed to prevent boosters from ripping off and to prevent compression damage when the core stage hits 15G acceleration near burnout.

I did a test launch of my Duna probe. The launch went well, but I didn't have enough batteries to survive an orbital night and I launched at sunset. So, by the time I'd have gotten to apoapsis my probe would be dead and by the time it got to the sun again, it'd be coming down through atmosphere again.

However, I was close enough to my Duna window and heading in roughly the right direction for my transit burn, so I just did it. Got a good connection too right at my apoapsis around the sun. So, I figured I'd make this "test flight" my actual flight.

Which may be the first time I ever had a test flight that failed at launch, which caused me to upgrade it to an actual flight.

Spent most of the day writing up my mission report for the Mün missions in the Constellation Program challenge. Pretty lengthy report.

Got the first phase of the Duna portion of the challenge underway by launching the various landers. Docked the cargo lander to the Kerbin Return Vehicle. And now I wait for the next transfer window.

Learned that setting conic draw mode to zero makes fine tuning interplanetary encounters a whole lot easier. Duna 1 will need another slight correction burn a couple of days before it enters Duna's sphere of influence but preliminary modelling indicates that hitting a roughly equatorial orbit at aerobraking altitude should be perfectly doable.

Scrapped my plans to hack myself to full tech level and instead stuffed my gamedata with every mod I wanted to have again/try out for months and picking them up as the tree unveils.

Remote Tech caught me off guard when launching my first unmanned probe without an antenna ... as well as its changes to the antennas, making them use energy whenever they are deployed.

Limiting the transmission of science to a minimum, but still milking the launchpad/runway with a quick recovery before launch and hunting every EVA over x in Kerbins orbit.

After a few test flights and a stable polar orbit, my guys managed to built a big fat rocket - probably overengineered - to fly by the Mun. Minute planning and longer burning of the excess fuel got a high flyby of Mun with a queer encounter of Minmus ... with a free return to the Mun again!

Finally separating the transfer stage after moving the flight path into the Mun for impact observation from Kerbin and burning half of the emergency decelaration fuel of the manned science probe return vehicle a shallow reentry at about 40km above Kerbin was achieved, one aerobraking orbit was needed before final reentry.

The craft did not pack many science gizmos, only three of Goo and material experiments. But the pilot's report on his almost two week tour around the Kerbin region brought in some valuable insights - and finally convinced the government to fund a manned landing on the Mun should we manage to get a probe back from its surface first. So next up is establishing a comm-sat system around Kerbin for 360-control 24/7 ... er, 6/3 ... of the nearer region and building a plane to get the future Mun crew to the most inhospitable places on Kerbin for training purposes and equipment tests. (Yeah, science milking. :P )

That's the funniest ksp thing since Jeb Land.

Best compliment ever! Thanks!

Today, I spend a while carefully finishing my story about the rebuilding of the space center. And you should all go read it so I get return on emotional investment...

In KSP, I had quite the munar adventure. Launched an improved rocket after the discovery of fuel pipes. Still no struts.

Looks like the landing is slightly flawed though...

Milly Kerman went down into the Twin craters do some science, but ran out of pack fuel half way back. Had to walk.

Here she is after scaling that cliff, by jumping many times.

I had to recover all my science somehow, but the lander wouldn't right itself. I needed a solution: we developed a special magnet part.

This would've been simpler if I'd thought to use those rover wheels I unlocked earlier..

After much trying it worked. I flipped the ship into a more usable angle and fired the engine. Homeward bound.

Though something's up with the water today...

I finished pt2 of the Kethane tanker. Sent some Kerbals home, got the tanker landed, and started filling it up with delicious Kethane. :)

Is that a city I see in here? And how you got Milly to wear a blue space suit? (I don't have the full version, so I don't know.)

I deleted my career mode save file by an accident, i almost had every single thing on the tech tree :|

Do a Save backup every couple of days if you don't want to accidentally lose something.

You may try to recover the deletion if it is not in the trash using file recovery tools, bit no guarantee that they will even work after a couple of other saves take place.

If you do get the full version, you will have access to the wonderful world of mods! Download, and place them into the right files, to enhance your game.

The ones here :

City lights and Clouds by rbray89, with contribution of several others.

And for the suits:

Universe Replacer, by Tingle, but you have to look through the thread a bit to get to where people have posted suit textures. Try about 50 pages in, or use the thread search tool.

I think people generally post their successes. :)

If I'd kept all my footage I could have a montage of crashes and screw-ups. :sticktongue:

Very true. Though there is one thread dedicated entirely to fails..

I decided not to post the versions of my rescue package that didn't make it off the launchpad, or the times I tried to launch Milly's ship without re-angling it, causing the pod to break of, or worse. You can see the version of the rescue package which got to the Mun, but had its magnet break of on landing in to the far right of the second last picture...

Each success is build on many failures. A bit like life sometimes.
