What did you do in KSP1 today?

I'm sad to say this is one of my most successful landings so far:

Judging from the color of your "landing" site you tried to land on Eve and Eve has an athmosphere. So why don't you put some parachutes on? 3 Radials will bring your ship down to ~10m/s, a small burn 50m above the ground will bring it down to 1m/s. Seriously, landing on a planet is far easier than on a moon if you have chutes ;)

Kind of a weird experience. I was landing a spaceplane on the runway and had to turn slightly to the right while slowing down. As I was doing this, part of the left wing exploded. Despite it never colliding with anything, I assumed it had just hit the runway while I was turning. The flight log told me it had somehow hit the VAB.

I could have sworn I got a screencap of this, but all that's there is the same shot without the flight log. Odd.

I solved my Laythe lander's heat sheild problems. It kept wanting to point the wrong way, I decided to go with the flow.

Landing accurately still needs work.

I made a crazy plane, where the wings flex as you turn. It's ridiculously maneuverable.

This is with NEAR.

As I've jbeen playing ExtraSolar -which is awesome btw-, I decided to build an SR-K Rover.

It rolls around Kerbin now, looking for photobionts.

My kerbals are now considering their plans, should their planet ever be visited from something from another solar system.

Also, I solved a plot problem with my Oceans of Eve/City on the Mun story, leaving me clear to finish the chapter.

Hello,

I've been playing a stock sized kerbol system (30% science, rep, and funds) with Real Fuels/Stockalike engine configs using Kerbal iSP Difficulty Scaler set at 0.45/0.45.

I finally completed a 6 satellite ComSat network in semi-synchronous orbits (RemoteTech2). I don't have much of the tech tree unlocked (using the T-7 tech tree) so I used the low end Communotron 16.

It wasn't easy launching those satellites with the parts we start with but the challenge was fun! My next goal when I have the antenna available will be 3 geo-stationary satellites for long range communications.

I use TAC Life Support with human consumption rates so I tend to send probes before manned missions. Getting a communications network setup first is critical and imo more 'realistic'.

Mostly I've spent the last day or so ironing out the latest iteration of my comprehensive Kethane mining operation. It's basically an all-in-one launch of scanner, miner, fuel ferry, and fuel depot (complete with 5 docking nodes on said depot), and struts aside is 100% "reusable" (in the sense that nothing is lost or broken between launch and final destination of its various and sundry craft). The scanner's in its polar orbit looking for future deposits to harvest, the depot's in low equatorial orbit awaiting fuel for its massive reserve, the miner's extracting Kethane and converting it on-the-spot for the ferry, and the ferry's making regular trips between the miner and the depot. It works perfectly, which is quite nice. The whole operation hinges on the KAS Mouse design (pictured above), which are winch-attached rovers which allow two craft to dock from up to 100m apart without having to do any fancy shenanigans or involve any Kerbals.

I've been to the Mün. For the first time in this save. But...

Sadly the following reentry was the first one I did with the latest DRE version. This version now takes the heat of the atmosphere into which a chute gets opened into account. In other words: Bob Kerman died when his capsule hit the ground, after his parachute was burned by the plasma behind the capsule. May he rest in peace.

Afterwards, the mission was repeated, since everything else had worked perfectly. While Bob was the first Kerbal on the Mün, Jebediah was the first Kerbal to successfully return from there.

Stock game using FAR and DR don't open those chutes until after passing 3,000 meters or risk making giant craters on Kerbin...

I had a Saturn V day. I tried to build Mulbin's fairings for my Saturn Apollo missions a few weeks ago, but I couldn't get the space craft to the Mun because too much weight. I tried cutting down weight on everything but failed to get it right. This resulted in me having to build a Saturn V from scratch with a lot more dV. And what do you do with more dV launch bigger things :)

saturn%20v%20day%20%281%29.png

Getting rid of the first stage.

saturn%20v%20day%20%282%29.png

Yay fairings! :)

saturn%20v%20day%20%283%29.png

I Present thee .. the Mun!

saturn%20v%20day%20%284%29.png

Also started to build an interplanetary drive for a Von Braun type Duna mission.

saturn%20v%20day%20%285%29.png

The drive is more or less complete but I still need to design the CTV and the lander

saturn%20v%20day%20%286%29.png

And a new Saturn demands a bigger Skylab. The new Saturn V easily launches 90tons into a 500x500 orbit. I need a few reaction wheels though, I struggled with keeping it straight.

And I build a Duna science drone with the new wings.

Busy day :)

Messed around with Remote tech so that I could include the flight computer (only thing I wanted from the mod, really, too bad not available alone) and not have to bother with dish ranges... took about 1-2h of tweaking but I've got it. So now my ion probes are doing their burs while I browse the web or post here !

I launched a ~1000 part ship containing my 5 satellites to Kerban's orbit (my poor, poor computer), and started putting sending them to their destination. 2 for Mun/Minmus (doing it's burn now), then Before going to bed, will send the interplanetary transport to eve for Eve/Gilly. Tomorrow the last one will go to Moho.

It's progressing (And fun) !

Today, I sat with my KSC staff around the big round table in the Admin Office to discuss our next big move.

The main topic was, "should we hurry and take the first Kerbal in an interplanetary mission, or should we study the planets a little more before daring to go where no Kerbal has ever been?".

By one side - Led by Jebediah -, the enthusiasts want to fly to Eve in a big mission with 11 Kerbals, in order to set up a science station orbiting Eve. No landings are expected.

In the other side, I defend and try to convince those Kerbals that it's too early for such big misson, and the maximum we can do is wait for Duna's next transfer window, and send one - or a few - probes out there to scan the planet.

Sending a Kerbal out of Kerbin' SOI is a big step, and must be done with maximum care. I don't think we know the space around us well enough yet to launch that Eve mission.

But in any case, this discussion is yet to warm up and I'm expecting a whole bunch of arguments involving "Snacks" and "Boosters", trying to convince each other side. We shall see what will happen.

Having fun assembling my first modular space station:

The Mark2 lander cans are from my crew transfer vehicle, which leaves them after undocking (after the Shenzhou, which is designed to do the same to slowly increase the size of Tiangong).

I learned about persistent file editing when Jeb an Geoffry decided to stay in rag doll state in the command seats after flipping the Mun rover. It only happened twice on the 30 km trip so that's a plus. I am glad I built that rover with a pivot point when it is upside down.
