how much living space would they need (in terms of hitchhiker storage containers)?

Personally, I like to give them a nice view:

But in terms of Hitchhikers, the space between the cuploas can be considered a Hitchhiker's space along with the (we can assume similar) crew capacity/space of the cuploas. So that means that in the case of the aforementioned space station above, the primary hab unit has about 2 hitchhikers worth of space for 4 kerbals.

Realistically for a years long voyage? Enough to be able to feel like there's a small crowd, or to form small mobile social groups. 5-6 minimum, 10-12 better. And living space for double or triple that amount.

Mind you, look at the history of whaling voyages. Dozens of crew members crammed into a box for years on end; worked well enough.

Seeing as you have all of those board games and snacks. I'd say enough people to play the board games with until you get to Jool, but not too many that all the snacks will be eaten.

Just curious, where did you find out about my huge collection of board games? I can't find it my info. Do you work for the NSA?

Thanks.

I like to strap 16 into rover seats which are bolted to a girder. Saves a lot of space and cuts down on parts. I guess they keep each other company. About as well you would expect from people stuck on a log ride for 7 years.

I prefer the standard three that come with a command pod. Usually I try to pick one who is fairly confident and smiles at everything (he's the commander), one who has middlish stats, and one who freaks out at the slightest explosion. I may have stolen this from the original trio of Bob, Bill, and Jeb...

Better to just send one out first. Can always follow up with an orbital habitat if things seem rather friendly there. Jool is far out there, and it was only recently discovered. Part of me agrees with the cadre of scientists who think it is just a smear on the telescope lens.

Better yet, just send a probe out and have it be monitored by a Kerbin orbital habitat. Let those lazies watch over it as they play their board games and eat their not food.
