Mainsails Overheating fix.

So, dunno if everyone know this, but I though I'd share my fix with who doesn't know.

if you put a mainsail on your ship, throttle up it will overheat quickly until it explodes, the fix for this is to not to put the jumbo ( orange tank ) then the mainsail engine under it, the trick is putting one of the grey ones above the mainsail, so for example, it goes like this:

Jumbo

| |

any grey tank

| |

Mainsail

and you can now throttle up and get the juice out of your mainsail :D!

I actually had this problem a while back as well, and my solution (as suggested by a commentor) is to put one of those small octagonal struts under the Jumbo tank, slap on 6-8 struts to hold it together better, then put a fuel line from the tank to the engine. Problem solved!:)

The large rockomaxx adapter works just fine too. As well as throttling up to something just shy of 100%. I'm not glorying to burst anyone's bubble - not everyone knows this - but maybe my random mentioning of this will help that one person who didn't know mainsails and jumbo-64's don't seem to get along :)

Not to burst your bubble, but I do in fact believe that everyone knows this. Maybe someone could make a KSP Tips/Tricks guide with this in it.

I think stuff like this needs to be stickied in gameplay questions and tutorials. It is a surprisingly common thing for new players to ask.

its not just the mainsail. it also happens with the atlas, and maybe others as well. also with the large nuclear engine, although im not sure if that was included in the latest update or if i just installed it from the KSPX mod

a better solution is to just not use the orange tanks, and to use the grey ones instead. putting the quarter tank underneath sometimes causes things to go wonky, especially if you have a really massive load on top, its just too much for the small tank sometimes. and using the orange one only saves you 1 part anyway (whoop de doo), its not like your going to get any major fps increase from using it

See, this is where this thread is useful - because all you need to do is strut the quarter tank to the orange tank in four places, and 90% of the time your problem is solved.

I can still overheat the Mainsail in this sort of config. I forget where I saw it or what video it may have been in, but sometimes its more to do with part count or some such. Also, if you use a lifter like say this:

below the capsule, the 7 Jumbo tanks + the mainsails, it overheats as well, its just that, those are the biggest engines you can use w/out mods, and they do produce a ton of heat...

And how would "everyone" know that if they're not told because supposedly "everyone knows it already"?

I figured it out for myself, sheer luck too as I wasn't looking for the solution, it just dawned on me one day when adding a grey tank under an orange one (instead of the usual I always did before, adding it on the top) and the mainsail didn't overheat.

That was months after I first got frustrated by overheating mainsails. Nobody had told me, probably because "everyone knows it"...

Two points:

1. The Cubic Octagonal Strut supports fuel crossfeed, as a result, you don't need the fuel line; the Rockomax Mainsail will be able to pull fuel through the COS just fine.

2. You can actually get away with as few as two bracing struts. I suspect you can get away with one bracing strut, but I haven't tested that few.

Yep, I can confirm that you can overheat Mainsails with the -32 grey tank as well. Granted it takes much longer to overheat, that red bar surely does pop up when they are used in configurations like the one AlamoVampire's picture. I run only a docking alignment mod.

A) Use the x32 grey tank at the bottom and you will completely solve the problem.

B) One octagonal strut, and zero connector struts, will astonishingly also completely solve the problem without introducing any others.

I have never, ever been able to do this. I suggest maybe something else is happening.
