0.23 Patch--New Save Breaking Debate!

Naten

Do you think the saves will break?

  1. 1. Do you think the saves will break?

    • Yes.
    • No.
    • What saves? This is the Kentucky State Police forum, right?

If they manage a significant optimization, I promise you all that I will launch something so huge, the tidal forces its mass causes will tear the spaceport from the surface and have it trail behind me as I incinerate the atmosphere.

I'm talking ten thousand parts. If the optimization is good.

... I already have ideas.

Nothing in the list of planned features indicates to me that it will be save breaking.

Save breaking comes from things which change things in the save game file... such as changing the shape of the ground and thus position of your craft or the physical shape of parts or the existence of parts or maybe how parts link together. The save file is just the list of parts that comprise your vessel and how they link together and where it is. Changing other things won't break saves.

They tell us about a new lab module... then show us a picture... How could you possibly think it was a picture of anything other than the new lab module?

I just don't understand people some times.

Even if the saves break, it won't bother me. I treat each update as a brand new game experience, so I tend to start a new game over again to try out the new features, even if I have old saves intact. It also gives me an excuse to come up with new ship designs for the new Space Program.

Yes. I think the IVA showed 4 Kerbals. See the article.

Where is the article with the IVA ?

All I know it that the lab can be used to analyze samples and results in space, its however heavy, one of the heaviest parts so I guess it will probably weight between two hitchhiker containers and a large gray fuel tank.

I think when money is implemented, we need to start over. How else are we going to get money for stuff?

Well ... then there is that...

We've now entered a time when we can have updates that break Career saves but not Sandbox saves. There is no reason to think .23 would break either.

I for one would start another career save for .23 simply to test and give my feedback on the changes they made.

I am pretty sure it'll break the saves. The tech tree is being reworked, plus all of the other changes in research. I can't imagine that saves would work.

I am of more mixed opinions this time around than earlier...but you know what, it's still Alpha and I still reall want the changes that the new release(s) brings.

So bring on the save break.

What sort of brakes? Hand brakes? Air brakes? Disc? Drum? Piston? Aero? Litho? Guacamole?

Lithobrakes. JEB, GIVE ME BACK THE KEYBOARD!

Anyways, thanks for pointing that out. :)

I work in software development QA. All day long at work I test and evaluate software for customers, most of which are game developers.

In my experience launching the game can and easily will break existing saves within the same build version.

So, err, maybe the update will break saves?

It brakes the save, it does, it slows it down to a standstill. This is known as the pre update pause.

Though, in all seriousness, I'd rather this one didn't break saves. But, worst comes to worst, I've got craft files, and I've got hyperedit.
