NovaPunch or KW rocketry?

  1. 1. NovaPunch or KW rocketry?

I don't know if one is better than the other from a gameplay standpoint. I like KW more because of it's style. Also, NovaPunch includes some Pods and lander parts made to work in specific combinations, which I didn't use when I tested it, while KW currently has no pods or lander-specific parts.

I prefer KW. Parts are just better modeled and focussed. Novapunch has a lot of "useless" parts that I either delete or never use. Also, I am a minimalist when it comes to spacecraft design, so I barely ever need to make 3.75m rockets, let alone 5m.

NP and KW are 2 totally different packs....

NovaPunch is part heavy, has alot of fluff to it, and is mainly focused on Kerbal replicas of rl rocket series...mainly the saturn series. Personaly I think the 5m stages are pointless (esp with the engine parameters for the 5m engines) they all have horrible TWR.....much more effective to make multicore 3m lower stages.

KW on the other hand is more about just what you need to build reliable launch vehicles. I am also more fond of the KW engines, as they seem more suited for building heavy lifters. Im also desperatly in love with the new batteries that just got added last update....no more silly duracells hangign off my ships YAY!!!!

Really, as stated before, it really comes down to personal playstyle and taste.....maybe you want more pods, more small lander parts...maybe you just want new engines....like so much in KSP its all about what you need/want, nothing more.

I will say this though, both mods are well done, both art wise and gameplay/balance wise. Both mods also have good devs working on them.

I like KW better as well-- more consistency among the parts, and NP's engines have always seemed overpowered to me. They're a fair bit better than stock, whereas KW just gives you more options with comparable performance to stock. I also like the aesthetics; rockets built with KW parts look like rockets.

Hah, well when you have people saying something is too powerful and too weak, that usually means its about right :) (for the record, the TWR on the NP engines are all between 200 and 300:1 which is close to stock proportions, minus crazy-weak outliers like the Poodle)

KW2.0 is a very good pack, their new artwork is top notch (though I think the new things frizzank has done is as good, and that process is ongoing) - I would use KW myself if I wasn't maintaining my own pack.

The main difference in the packs is the utility parts, KW is almost solely tanks/engines and things to service those, while NP has a wide array of (somewhat eclectic) utility parts and parts to make space craft. You should definitely pick and choose which parts you like if its too many parts though.

I ended up using one or the other as my primary part pack, along with bits and pieces from the other. I love the 5m parts from NovaPunch and I love the look of KW, especially that SPS engine. Looks perfect on my Apollo like SM.

So neither is really better then the other. Just a choice of looks.

Hah! Didn't expect a reply from the main guy currently supporting Novapunch. I should qualify my previous statements-- I ran novapunch for a long time, think it's a great mod, and think that its author has added far more to the KSP community than I ever will. Mostly it came down to that unfortunate 3.7ish gb limit, too many parts to dig through, and that 5 meter Saturn V base. It was too easy to take designs that wouldn't work any other way and stick that engine on a standard asparagus stack to make them work. I also used that little orbital achievement device more than anything else, which made me decide that it must be OP and I should uninstall it for my own good. I did no mathematical analysis to validate such an opinion.

I may dig through NP and pull out those big nuke rockets in the future though...

Some of you might remember the early days of KSP. A pod, a winglet, a parachute, a fuel tank, and two engines. We couldn't make lots of stuff with that. NP was the holy grail of modding for a long time, and it's still a pretty big mod.

What am I trying to say? NP has a long story. Some models are pretty old, and some of them have been replaced by stock parts. Kyle and Winston stood on the shoulders of giants, and created a masterpiece as a result of that. I use NP for it's engines and 5m tanks/adapters, but KW gets my vote. It makes rockets look more like rockets, and stuff looks more professional with it. :)

I like both, but don't use the whole NP pack due to memory limitations. The parts in NP that I use:

1. 5m tanks, engines sas and adaptors/decoupler. Because sending a 340tn to LKO LOX station module is always fun.

2. Inline NERVAs, engines are balanced and beautiful.

3. Inline and small profile radial parachutes, always handy in some builds.

4. Some of the auxiliary engines, they help a lot in de-orbiting stages from LKO and keeping the Kessler Syndrome in check. I also love the fact that you can find them in the control tab. C:

As a relative newcomer, I like KW's style more, but what sold me completely was the new Semyorka-style side tanks (wooo!) and conic adapter-tanks.

I can finally make soyuz lifter look-alikes, and I've only scratched the surface of that new release.
