Lunar Landing Training Vehicle. "The Flying Beadstead" *DL link

Recommended Posts

HI all,

I was watching the documentary "In the shadow of the moon" and saw Neil Armstrong trying to fly it and thought that it looked like fun!

So I came up with this this:

94E99003932232A1E7550D65BE419D5A4248917C

Its actually very stable. Landing can be tricky due to the slow reaction of the jet engine but its possible to land it on the VAB or anywhere else with a bit of practice.

If you happen to run out of fuel or have a Neil Armstrong moment you can simply eject!

Yay I crashed!

It has enough fuel to get to the island and back a few times. It would also be very easy to add more fuel though. I would love to take it into orbit!!

Looks sketchy as hell, just like the real thing! Very nice recreation. Must be a pig to fly. How much RCS fuel do you have on board?

With that reaction wheel its not too tricky to fly as long as you have flown a bit before. You can fly it without the torque of the RW and that IS tricky. Very fun though!

I think the RCS amount is 410. That is enough to last you as long as the main jet fuel tanks.

LOVE THIS! i wish there was some mechanism to rewarded you for building and using training craft. I know that you/the player are rewarded, by getting better at flying, but it would be nice if there were some kind of stat or XP reward for training your kerbals ether with training craft or just flying missions.

maybe overall crew experience gives you some kind of financial benefit some how. maybe you could attract better contracts? (if contracts ever become a thing)

anyway awesome craft. well done.

Thanks Snuggler!

That would indeed be awesome. I agree that it would be tough to implement an experience bar for Kerbals because what would it effect?

Perhaps using a more experienced kerbal would grant you more science or as you mentioned, benefit you financially.

This is too awesome. I'll have to give it a try.

Cheers Gus. I will upload it to Spaceport shortly.

She has a range of about 170Km. This could be increased with ease. The landing 'feet' are a bit wobbly but they are strong enough and that was the best

looking part for the poles the LLTV sits on IRL.

Very cool.

You've obviously spent some time balancing this out, but a question occurs to me: do Kerbals have weight? For most designs it wouldn't matter that much, but for this one, it seems like the weight of a Kerbal cantilevered that far out from the COM could make a difference.

Yeah I spent a while making sure it's balanced. And Kerbals do have weight as the ejector

Seat is much faster without a Kerbal in the seat.

I'm not sure of a Kerbals exact mass but it's not enough

To throw of the crafts balance. As the reaction wheel does a lot to stabalize it.

It's much harder to fly without the wheels torque, she reacts much slower.

It's fun though as it's much more of a challenge.

Very nice craft MajorJim, look out for Cupcakes offer of employment ;)

Vtol craft are, in my opinion at least, the most fun one can have in the atmosphere especially when trying to land with jets alone, and you have the looks of this craft spot on :)

Hi all,

here is the DL link to the LLTV craft. It now has a more secure ejection seat:

http://www./download/r4wb25kh4yor8gc/LLTV++_The+flying+bedstead_.craft

And here is the 'Jeb edition' with no ejection seat :D

http://www./download/3r48kzabdivhycv/LLTV++_The+flying+bedstead_+Jeb+edition.craft

The new ejection seat cage:

46B351FC84B32B08C994CBFB07FABA2119CAFDA6

Even if the seat is destroyed or the Kerbal thrown out the cage will hold you secure!

Action group 1 will detach the crew pod and deploy the antenna.

Have fun!

I believe a Kerbal weighs 90kg in the external seat. They don't weigh anything in a pod, they're included in the pod mass somehow :).

This is an amazing design, by the way. I especially appreciate how much it looks like the real thing. I belive the real thing only used the jet to cancel out 5/6 of Earths' gravity, though, and used the RCS system to both maneuver and land, simulating a landing on the Moon. Do you think this would be possible to do with a Kerbal version? I.e a machine where the jet lifted 5/6 of it, and you had to use RCS to actually take off... I guess the tanks getting lighter would be a problem, but it must have been on the real thing too.

Thanks Rickenbacker!

I did try to get it to do this by using the trust limiter. Its possible to get it hovering but due to the way the jets operate it is very very hard to hold it level.

You should DL the craft and give it a go and report back.
