Work-in-Progress [WIP] Design Thread

First thing after updating to KSP 1.0.5 after messing with a little plane is what I meant to be a little Torpedo Tube project, but quickly evolved into a PT boat replica. The exterior is practically done, but the interior is something I might have trouble with. The PT boat's equipped with prop Bofors+Oerlikons, but has Torpedoes and Depth charges, but sadly both don't do much damage, though the tops move at 60 Knots, which is nice. The PT boat sadly moves at only 33 knots, vs 41 in real life.

Built a somewhat unorthodox flying boat based off the PBY Catalina.

It's one of the first times I built a "replica" prioritizing function more than aesthetics, hence the not so appealing appearance, but it's been able to put up with some of my more insane maneuvers.

This is why I hate having to take one of my planes out and take screenshots of them before posting them -- It rarely goes well.

When I updated my B-17, this happened:

Attempt 1: Aircraft rammed one of the buildings while bombing, because it was too low.

Attempt 2: Aircraft's structure failed mid-air and shattered over R&D.

My Energia-inspired "Cyclone M" is now capable of lifting 100 tonnes to orbit. :)

Unfortunately, the booster arrangement leaves no room for wings, so a Buran replica won't fit.

Even if you do a really tall mounting point? IIRC, the boosters on Energia weren't that symmetrical either.

Rune. I'm also on and off tinkering with Shuttle-style stacks. Currently fairings are screwing with me because I'm trying a ~8m ET.

I know I'm late to the party because I haven't had the time... But those structural fuselages make great missile tubes! And it conveniently cleans up the mess of the octo strut + decoupler through heating effects. Although have to see how long a tube you need to avoid damaging the main craft.

Now we need to do another cannon challenge...

A tall mounting point could work, but it'll be really unbalanced. The boosters were arranged away from the payload on the Energia, which would be very challenging to balance.

I've been conducting a series of tests on my torpedoes, The Tri-Launcher is alright, and the tops have an ~100 km range, but they don't have much damage capability. Again, the tops still go 60+ knots, and this time use sepatron boosted to get out the tubes. I based it chiefly on the Mark 15 Torpedo, but instead used a Tri-Launcher instead of Quintuple.

I should get them released today or tomorrow. The tops still need manual adjustments every once a while.

You should make Type 93s and a Fubuki class DD

What issues are you having Rune? I know the fairings very well, perhaps I can help.

I am making a large fairing ET for my WIP shuttle. No issues so far.

I don't know if this is Runes issue but there is currently a CoM issue with fairings, StockBugFix takes care of part of it but there is another part that won't get fixed till 1.1

Yes but this is only when you retain the base I believe. It may cause some kind of offset drag but I am unsure of that.

Hey! Well, the SRBs seemed to think they were inside the fairing on my first draft. I'm currently dubious if that is because the decoupler is partially inside the fairing (I used the medium tall ones), or whether cargo bays and shrouds now have bigger-than-themselves shrouded areas that will make me put them really far away. In any case, it was at most a couple of hours worth of dabbling, I don't know if anything will come out of that build... although I had a pretty cute monoprop-powered orbiter with ~20mT payload.

Rune. It seemed to require 3 SSMEs and two SRBs, too, which looks doubly good in my book.

I've finally decided to try and make a Mk3 cargo Spaceplane. It still needs a little bit of work, as when it's in a good mood it flies straight and handles like a dream, but when it's in a bad mood (even if no parts or fuel levels changed) it handles like a frisbee and can't recover from tailspins to save its life.

Body drag will murder you during ascent. And afterwards, staging is going to be tricky indeed...

Then again, today I noticed something really cool: it doesn't take much to rocket your way to orbit, even using a runway to take off.

That one is a rediscovered 1.04 semi-forgotten file that I finally got around to test. Can you notice by how well the new Mk1 cabin fits?

Rune. In separatrons we trust?

I think I need to add O2 and Rapiers to the ascent vehicle. It simply doesn't get high enough.

There are a couple of monoprop engines at the bottom of the orbiter that are supposed to lift it out all gentle like...

Hello all,

I've recently gotten into the craze of building replicas, especially with the easy-turbo-fan-maker 3000 (also known as the J-90 Goliath engine). This is my pride and joy for the past couple weeks. Sure, it doesn't handle as well as I would like, and it does have a wobble problem at low speeds (under 90 m/s), but it still looks strikingly like the real thing. I hope you guys can give me more advice toward improving this plane, and I'll post extra craft files for more updated versions.

As for the performance, the handling is a little too oversensitive for my taste, but some of you may like that. As said in the album, action group 1 will turn on the lights, change the gear lighting, and raise the ladders. Beware that brakes turns on thrust reversal for the jet engines, so make sure you aren't flying backwards.

Hope everyone likes it, and if you do, let me know by slapping dat rep button! Also, this is my first craft, so... meh.

Hope this fits your tourist-contract needs,

X9

P.S. Please don't use this as a Jeb-Killinator, there are better things out there :P.

And yes, I did just copy pasterino from my main thread on the main page. 4 VIEWS AND COUNTIN PEOPLE!!!

WIP Torpedo for a larger project...

Works well, except that it didn't damage its target, and since there are only two elevators (to avoid Z-fighting) it doesn't have any roll authority. It can go underwater if needed, or cruise on the surface, and can do at least 16 m/s in the water. I would like it to go faster so maybe it can actually hurt ships, but I would either need more intakes or a bigger engine for that.

Or you porpoise it out of the water just before it hits with separatons for boost

Not even close to effective.... you need 60 m/s to hit a lightly armored ship, 75+ if you are hitting fuel tanks.

A vessel that pays homage to the ARES mission. Namely the MEM lander. I've been hyperediting the lander into orbit of Duna and will build a launch vehicle once all the kinks are worked out. Unlike the MEM that could only get back to Mars orbit, mine is direct to Kerbin capable. The MEM was always the most viable looking concept to me so I wanted to capture that in this build. Pardon the doodoo graphics and enjoy!

Working on my first large-scale replica for 1.0.5, the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.

It handles quite well, save for the fact that once the airspeed drops below 80-100 m/s it starts refusing to pull up/flare, so landings have not occurred thus far.

You know, I'd love to see some of your designs, my torps go a quite faster at 30 meters a second, and have a 80 km range, but nothing much in damage too.
