How are people having such dense and 3D clouds? Has BoulderCo updated?

Yeah, I guess with the preformance improvements in the vanilla game it was possible without a noticable preformance hit. It really looks great ingame.

Decided to go with a fresh install for 0.23.5, so after reinstalling all my mods I was left wondering what to do first. Well, how about a KSO flight?

13619720133_0d85c0f991_b.jpg

The Resolute all loaded up for its first flight. The first thing I did was load up the orbiter with a set of standard equipment (MechJeb, chutes since I suck at landing, RTGs for power, TAC life support for up to 30 days in orbit), then took that and made a separate craft file for each orbiter name. Finally I went ahead and made a payload for the Resolute. The "Skylab" is pretty basic: Two ScanSat detectors, a gravioli sensor, thermometer, and mid-sized antenna all attached to the KerbLab module and hooked into the cargo bay with a standard sized docking port.

Lift-off!

13619701635_de5cbea1b2_b.jpg

One thing that I both like and dislike about the KSO is that it's honestly better to do the ascent without MechJeb. Well, it's only a small dislike, because it's honestly an easy ascent profile, but I have a habit of overdoing the gravity turn early on and having to correct mid-flight. This launch was worse than most in that regard, after LRB sep the orbiter and EFT went all over the place for a minute. Not sure what caused that, but I'm blaming pilot error.

13619731933_bb94e8cd0b_b.jpg

As a result of that messy launch and the fact that FAR didn't seem to be working I was left with too little fuel to circularize. At least I won't have to worry about coming in too hot on reentry.

13619728453_637ee314a5_b.jpg

Still, there was enough time on orbit to do a little mock science. It was nice to at least see everything deployed and running.

Reentry. Fortunately the few flights I did with DRE in my last saves taught me just how to do this with an unmodified KSO. You need to come in shallow and keep the nose up as high as possible, 45 degrees is best. A good way to gauge how well you're doing in that regard is to keep an eye on the nose gear, I find that tends to be the first thing to blow up when things go pear-shaped.

13620068554_4065ccdce4_b.jpg

Any landing you can walk away from. Or swim away from, in this case. Like I said, I'm terrible with spaceplanes, KSO included. I can never get the dang things down gently and even without cloud cover I can't hit KSC to save my life. So ditching in the ocean is plan A for my KSO flights.

You should read your owner's manual, pg 2, Step 12 Option 1 or Step 13 Option 2 of the Quick Launch Guide. You have to do a little engine management after EFT separation. Either you use the two OMS + Top center SSME with Pitch Trim 14, or all three SSME no OMS with Pitch Trim 0 (least efficient). Only do that to circularize. Once you're happy with your orbit, turn the Top Center SSME off and just do your orbital maneuvers with the OMS Pitch Trim 14.

Ouch.. you have an expensive space program. Sea Water is extremely corrosive to the Orbiter's TPS system as well as several other flight systems. Consider your engines destroyed as well... :(

What I did to perfect my landings and re-entry is take a practice save game. Launch and then circularize, orbit until you're over the desert and save your game using F5.

Practice re-entry and re-entry burns until you get the hang of it. Use F9 to reload your quick save. Do this over and over again until you get your landings down to a T. Then, put some weight on it (the SST works well with a TL-100 fuel tank), launch and save and practice re-entry and landing over and over until you get bored.

That's pretty much how I learned. In fact now I can come back with any weight, day, night, pitch black, doesn't matter.

FAR complicates things slightly, but it will just drag out the learning curve since your numbers are just slightly different than stock. And if you have the FAR Flaps set up, it should all be easier.

Oh and don't forget to remove some of the fuel in the VAB before doing your practice runs.

One of the nice things about 0.23.5 is that you can now quick save anywhere, even in atmo. So now you can quicksave a couple thousand feet in the air and just keep reloading to practice your touchdowns. I've found those to be "hardest" with the KSO since it's likes to bounce back into the air or roll slightly destroying a wing (followed by the vessel itself when the gear poofs) after touchdown if you don't set her down just right. :)

@Helldiver: One thing I have noticed with 0.23.5 is that you can now land with full fuel and even a payload onboard and that the rear end doesn't snap off as much on touchdown as it did in 0.23. Squad's new joint reinforcement FTW!

Normally I can fly it just fine, I think what happened this time is, because I had pitched a little too fast, I was trying to keep the nose up and watching my apoapsis in map view at the moment the LRBs went out. When I swapped back, staged, and tried to get back on course it started dancing all over the place due to the input gap and sudden loss of mass. So yeah, pilot error. Just did a second launch with the same setup and it went perfectly.

I know, I keep hearing this, I just didn't really have a lot of patience for repeated practice landings while my station building project was ongoing. I have an idea for an approach sequence now that should work for me. I'm thinking I'll have to purposefully overshoot KSC and then loop back around to the runway given the shallow angle and high speed that the using FAR and DRE in combination requires for reentry. I was able to get my last flight down to around 35m/s on touchdown last landing, so speed probably won't be much of a problem, hitting the target is the big hurdle now.

I need a runway that's 5 times wider than we have now I always seem to land on the grass we at least its a landing

The way I fly her, if I can't hit the runway dead-center I'll purposely put her in the grass parrell to the runway. There's nothing worse than landing on the runway non-centerline and then to have the vehicle blow up because of that dreaded drop off between the runway and grass.

I was testing out the ARM stuff and thought I would try the new ARM SRB's on the the KSO, I was quite surprised they performed really well and looked quite good so if your looking for an alternative for your KSO consider using them

Never had an issue landing it on the runway with engines shut since deorbit (this space bird always lands facing the sea)... It is a very stable space glider....

Thank you modders for making this possible

Don't get me wrong, I've landed on the runway at both KSC and the Island, but there have been times where I've put her down just enough off center-line that I wasn't able to steer over and brake before the KSO left the edge of the runway, rolled and started making not-so-fun explosion sounds. :P

It's not a KSO problem, heck it can happen anytime I try to land any spaceplane. I just wanted to point out to other users that if you can make KSC but are having issues hitting the runway, that the terrain right next to the runway is pretty wide, flat and more suitable for landing than the hilly/mountainous terrain that populates the rest of Kerbin.

Also remember that the KSO has nosewheel steering that you can enable and get much greater amount of steering freedom. Not recommended at high speeds.

I fly with FAR and DE, I actually undershoot KSC with a burn on the farside and just skip in the upper atmosphere for longer. It works perfectly for me but your experience may be different... especially if your cargo was giving you drag.

Decided to take a page from Russia's playbook and strapped a pair of radial jets to the engine mount of the Dauntless for powered test flights to get a feel for the KSO's atmospheric handling.

13633185153_4552324ec1_b.jpg

It flies pretty darn good, all things considered. You have to take off the SMEs to keep it balanced for take-off, otherwise it's tail-heavy and sits with its nose in the air. While I wasn't able to hit the runway I did make a nice soft landing out by the science complex.

13633161165_3331ef5b39_b.jpg

I also decided to go crazy and try a "Wild Horses"-style runway to suborbital flight again, this time with the aid of two SRBs. The Adamant actually made it out of the atmosphere this time, though those Rockomax SRBs aren't as powerful as I'd like. I had to burn the SMEs at 33% up to around 500m to get enough speed for take-off. Also the little sepratrons on the nose didn't seem to do anything when I lit them to nose-up the orbiter, guess it's too heavy with the SRBs.

Gorgeous shots everyone!

KSO EWBCL Update

-Not much to update, just a lot of brick and mortar 3D modeling. On the bright side, I'm at a point where I'm happy with how it looks externally and Nazari gave me good news regarding some stuff that was holding me back (cutting out the landing gear wells). Aside from that it's been smooth sailing.

-Taking my time. I don't want to rush like I did Phase II. I tend to get cranky and tired when I marathon things and then take it out on the forums... So instead I've divided it all up into goals and once I meet them I stop working on it.

-Problem is that I start getting anxious and want to see it in game, and that's when the rush hits...

-Another thing I want to attack is the dark HUD/ADI issue some folks are experiencing. Think I may have a version without screen FX that I will send to some folks to see if that fixes. The problem is that we don't have a screen FX on the HUD yet they are seeing it dark, so I doubt it is that.

Getting used to the SST and the qwirks now.. I love this thing.. It's a little qwirky in areas but god darn is it fun.. Now doing easy 500km orbits with a moderate payload. Seriously. This adds such a level of reality to the game.

So with a few modifications, the new stock LES works great for taking the shuttle to safety.

A full abort situation from launch to emergency landing.

Mission report/ Description of KSO LES Test I:

"A successful test of the LES on the KSO! The LES preformed as it should have and propelled the Mini Shuttle away from the dangerous LFT and LRBs! This show's a promising future in Kerbal safety!"

That's pretty much what I did - now, my only problem is actually getting lined up with the runway. I've watched a lot of videos and read a lot of posts and nothing really tells me how to do that part. As a result, I touch down several dozen meters to either side of the runway and/or at an angle to it.

hmm reminds me of how space shuttles used to have ejector seats and other forms of aborts

Hi there,

KSO does not work with the FASA mod at my Computer. It make a Gamecrash on the Loadscreen when he load the Last Part ( squad/spaces/podcockpit/internal/podcockpit). It works fine when i delete the FASA mod. I reinstall KSP but it still do not work with the FASA. Is that a known Error?

Here is the crashlog
