SNC "Dream Chaser" *Video by Woopert*

This is a great build!

I learned some neat tricks, and your modeling is really clean. Besides the impressive nose, i really like the rear 1/3 of the ship.

I had plenty of fuel left in the orbital insertion stage, and could easily reach a 120km orbit.

It passes the imperative "Looking Cool on Reentry" test.

It definitely glides like one would expect a "wingless" design to glide. It is a little nose heavy, but it is controllable all the way down, and I had no problems landing on the second stripes on the first decent.

Kudos!

Honestly I'm not sure. I do know that the landing gear used for that flight test back in October were not the final design and were modified from some fighter jet plane. Only benefit I can come up with for a skid is increased drag? I'm no expert. :P

I'm sure they know what they're doing :)

FYI Majorjim, just completed the first mission (it's late at night here though at the time of this post). RCS might be a problem for some but wasn't for my needs (had half left when done). Successfully landed at the runway which is oh so satisfying! Brilliant design, gotta keep saying it. Tis was my first runway landing with stock KSP parts, even though it's your design. :)

Hi Woopert,

Yeah I was thinking that maybe it had too little RCS, but as you say for one orbital station visit its just enough, and you can use the motors to match speed for a rendezvous.

I'm so happy you landed it! Its is satisfying isnt it!

Great craft!

But I have to say that the launch vehicle could be optimized, since it has a very low TWR, resulting in a waste of fuel.

And add some RCS facing down, because she doesn't traslate very well upside.

EDIT how electricity is produced?

HI PlonioFludrasco,

I agree, the launcher could be improved.

If I understand correctly, you mean she wont flip up as well as down in zero gravity? This was on my mind too when making it. I felt the difference was small so decided to leave it as is. I will try with some more down facing nozzles as you suggest and see how it feels.

To limit weight and for simplicity sake I put an RTG inside.

Thanks for the DL mate. :)

Hi Majorjim,

Would you be okay if I feature this in a YouTube video? The video is focused on the spacecraft and is sort of cinematic (my editing skillls are adequate at best :P).

I added some nice Kevin MacLeod music to go with it. At the beginning it shows your name "Majorjim" and there will be a link in the description to this thread. :)

Woopert that would be awesome! go right ahead.

Was playing around with the design and came up with this for a new first stage. It's actually 12 LVT-45s meant to look like 2 engines, like the real Atlas V. I can post a download link if you like it. :)

It performs well and has more or less the same Delta-v and TWR as the original.

Tell you what, send it to me first as I would love to test it.

Had another successful landing at KSC today. So much fun!

After that last picture, and after an unplanned fast descent, the plane disintegrated in a blast of awesomeness when it hit the head of the runway. It it perfectly capable of landing on the runway, it was my bad piloting that got the poor guy killed. :P

Lol that's happened to me a few times too mate!

Nice space pic. Is that universe replacer?

Have you had time to do further tests with that engine setup? Just curious to see how it works. I think I might do some more testing with it myself.

:)

Hi Woopert. Yeah I have just flown it. I really like the main engines! It feel more rockety now. It was very keen to flip though. This can be countered by clipping some small wings at the bottom in 4X.

Do some more tests and report back. When that's done I will update the link in my post and give you credit for the launcher.

Hey, I'm trying to download this, because i really like Dream Chaser, and the file download is as a .txt format, I don't know if there is a link to download it as a .craft file, but if there is, could you post it?

Thanks,
