Merge two games?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how (or if it is even possible) to merge two different games in the same KSP installation? For example I built a kick'n space station in save file X my son built a cool munbase in save file Y. Now I would like to consolidate these two games so that the station and munbase are in one save file.

If you know exactly what you're doing and what to look for, you can find the relevant craft data in one persistent.sfs file and manually copy-paste it into the other one, which (if successful) should effectively transfer the craft in question over to the other save. I'd highly recommend backing up both files before trying this, though, just in case things go wrong.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I guess I don't know what to copy. I tried copying everything between the words 'VESSEL'. When I paste it into a different persistent.sfs file, the game can not see ANY of the saves. When I delete the modified persistent.sfs file, the game goes back to normal and can see the old saves. So obviously I'm introducing some sort of error when I add one vessel to another game's persistent.sfs file. I just can't figure it out. I'll keep trying...

I did something as simple as changing the placement of one Kerbal in the XML file and screwed things up. Note: I did not move him in the game. I copied his code block and moved him to the top of the code active roster block. Putting him back where I found him (in the xml file) made everything go back to normal. So, I doubt merging in tons of ships and crew from one file to another will do anything good for your game.

I'd say that tool is your best bet, if it exists and you can find it.

I found the tool. It's called KSPSavemerge. Sadly the Developer has indicated that he won't be updating it any time soon, and it's stuck on a version compatible with v 0.20.

There shouldn't be any reason why it wouldn't work in .23, I don't think the save system has changed that much. On another note any vessels that you want to copy should go at the END of the flight list (Just before the roster at the end of the file)

  • 3 weeks later...

I realized that I was on the right track, but I was accidentally inserting a space before one of the indentation brackets. When I fixed that, I was able to copy a new vehicle into an existing persistent.sfs file. The new vessel has to be inserted after the last original vessel, before the ROSTER section. You cannot have extra lines, spaces or any additional characters. In notepad, the indentation brackets are positioned by TAB. Hope others find this helpful.

Thanks for the info. I've moved around small craft before but never merged something large like stations or bases. Good to know!

In the future, a good tip to add crafts to a save file:

Produce a dummy craft, and replace the dummy with the actual craft in the save file.

To make a dummy, go to the VAB, make any craft (just a probe core is enough), hit launch, and save. This adds the 'craft' to the save file, Just replace this craft with the actual craft, and done without complications
