OCD vs. KSP

I am a person with very strong OCD... personality traits...

KSP is so addictive and in so many ways launches my OCD traits through the roof. My latest problem is that I installed the kethane mod. Now I need to map every single bit of land on every celestial body.

Anyone else here with similar obsessions?

when i send a probe, i must check EVERYTHING. i have a check list:

will the probe work with a nuclear reactor failure?

can the probe survive a colision with a space station, a space shuttle, and a refueling probe?

Is there any radiator?

on each probe there must be 3 docking ports: 0.65m, 1.25m, and 2.5m.

what's the Delta-V of the probe?

I'm not very OCD but watching other people play on YouTube it drives me NUTS when they don't keep right on their maneuver node marker during burns. Watching it slowly wander away makes me want to scream at them through the Internet and back in time.

Oh yeah, I'm TOTALLY obsessed, games do that to me...

I had that with Minecraft, but then KSP came along. x-D

Ohhh so many bad maneuvers, so many incorrect burns... someone NEEDS to make a maneuver planning tutorial!

Actually I think following the maneuver marker everywhere can be counterproductive, given that the marker has no idea that your ship needs time to do the burns and that you may be slightly off on your timing. Also, I find that there's little point getting an exact maneuver planned ahead of time with the floating point errors that exist, so I generally just set one that's about right and then make fine adjustments with the ship itself.

All this means that if for example I'm doing a Kerbin-Mun transfer, I'll stick to the prograde marker rather than the maneuver marker, because after a minute or so that thing develops a mind of its own.

Says the man who keeps pointing "at" the maneuver node marker by pressing keys repeatedly.

Sure, for hitting a huge, nearby target like Mun. But following the maneuver node perfectly while trying to intercept an asteroid, or Eeloo from Kerbin's SOI, makes all the difference in the world.

Is there another way to point at it?

Are you saying the direction of the node doesn't matter? You, the man who needed such precise nodes that he put 0.01 m/s fine controls in his mod. :D

I didn't, it was regex - I took over maintenance of the mod after it was in ;)

But I agree, it's a bit ridiculous. Noone can execute nodes that precisely, not even MechJeb.

I get that. At the end of each burn, I correct the last 0.2 m/s or so using RCS, and sometimes even in the "fine" setting. I know, it's kind of useless but I just reall want the node to be burned correctly.

This whole thread made me wince. OCD isn't a character trait, it's a serious disorder (after all, that's what the d's for...). It's a much more complex problem than just being excessively neat. I don't want to come across as angry at anyone, but please treat these sort of issues with some sensitivity. :)

Anyway, I think the term you're looking for is "perfectionism". Thank God for editor extensions and vertical snap, trying to place my parallel boosters level with the core would be an aggravating task otherwise...

I recently started using the Kethane mod more commonly and when I sent a ship to Eeloo I too felt a strong urge to map it entirely. In fact, I covered 98% of it. I would change the inclination, set time warp to 50X and do something else online. Coming back every 5-10 minutes to repeat the process. This went on for nearly 2 hours. So, yeah, I feel your pain OP. lol

I have to do missions in logical progression.

Before going to the Mun I must have launched several satellites, some to the Mun. I must go to the Mun first, the Minmus, and only then interplanetary.

This makes starting a new game sometimes tedious, but fun none the less. I just don't get very far...

Indeed. 'OCD' has become a catch-all way to describe what's actually neatness / perfectionism but it still carries the negative vibe.

If a mechanic is doing an alignment on your car, do you want him to be a perfectionist or somebody with OCD? True OCD would mean him checking it three times because he feels compelled to, even if he was spot-on the first time. That means you get the same level of work as the perfectionist but have to wait three times as long for it.

Other things I do:

New one: If I notice that my kerbals have first names starting with different letters, they must be changed.

My ships can not have empty seats in command modules when going for transfers or when docked with a station.

Even if on different planes, my satellite orbits can not interject echother when looking at the planet from above the poles.

edit: no, i'm not a neat person nor a perfectionist

I am not even good at the game, some things just have to be done or they bug the hell out of me.

Hmmm I think that has been me lately burning way off target, but I am getting better (or I just don't show the burn LOL). My OCD thing though is with lights........I need more lights on all my ships and scream at the screen when others forget lights. It is so bad that I honestly downloaded a mod that has better lights that can mount flush to the bottom of the craft, meaning better landing lights.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
