The Official Kerbin Cup Tournament Thread - Final Entries Posted

Does anyone else think competition 2's requirements are too stringent? 100% stock is going to make capturing good video very difficult (not to mention limiting the creativity), and 50% of time at KSC is also limiting it quite a bit.

Here are some tricks that can help. Free advice!

The + and - keys can give you smooth zooming in and out, as the arrow keys can give you smooth rotation for video capture

F2 hides the UI for cleaner screen.

Always consider time of day and try to keep that consistent when shooting several scenes that are supposed to be connected time-wise.

Always record 4x as much video as you think you need, this gives you options when editing.

Now that voting is over for the first challenge, I wanted to post a reply to some of the comments about my team's map-view trophy:

First, it was an unaltered in-game screenshot, not a composite image. It was created with a combination of savefile text editing and HyperEdit. For better or worse, no actual rocketry took place.

I'm sure it still took a long time to do, but it's not demonstrating KSP skill, it's demonstrating data entry skill.

That's a totally legitimate criticism, BUT don't underestimate (a) the artistic skill required to conceptually build a map-view trophy, and (B) the orbital physics knowledge necessary to even know what numbers to put into HyperEdit. I am bragging on my teammates here because I had nothing to do with the nitty-gritty details.

Last I checked an orbit is not a craft. Or are we cutting them slack because we expect a certain amount of illiteracy from Reddit?

While it's true that we don't read good, we also took a risk as a team to try something outside the box. I figured that if HyperEdit was allowed, we needed to do something that was impressive even for HyperEdit. When I saw our competition, I was pretty worried that we were going to get eliminated first for this. All of the entries were stunning.

My teammates have assured me that assembling the trophy was was rather arduous, and we are all looking forward to actually playing the game this round. :)

50 % at KSC is ok but forcing the teams to incorporate a 20s goal sound is stupid. Unless it's allowed to translate it into kerbal speech or/and play it sped up.

How did you do that?

Or just click "reply with a quote" and see for yourself.

Note that I said that it *must* be used, not *how it should be* used.

Aahhh, video - how I love it [/sarcasm]

Here's a hint teams - I won't be watching anything more than a couple of minutes long and I won't be voting for anything I don't watch. Presumably though, a lot of people who don't have broadband caps will think the exact opposite.

Oh heck no. I have uncapped broadband at home, but if a video is >5 minutes it will have to be incredibly interesting to hold my limited attention sp- Ooh, marquee tags work here!

50% of time at KSC cuts out what I'd say is the "obvious" thing - sending the ball on some loopy space trajectory before it flies through a goal somewhere.

I made it through so the hyperEdit rant really isn't needed. People really liked the orbit one which is cool, they figured out what the people wanted. Even though it was a building competition......

Not that I don't understand this criticism, but building orbits is every bit as difficult as building spaceships.

That said, I disagree that this was a building competition; it was an art competition. We were (tentatively) planning to do something completely different until we learned about the one screenshot limit.

At any rate, congrats to all of the other teams. T'were some nice trophies on display. I especially liked forum Team 4; that's an impressive display of building skill.

Well, then I stand corrected and take all my hats off, good sir. You not only earned my vote (I did vote it just because of the amount of lateral thinking required), but also my profound respect! Indeed that shows a lot of knowledge about orbital mechanics, but also stuff about hyperedit I didn't know was possible, and that kind of negates my criticism of allowing it for this challenge. Well done indeed!

Rune. Then again, I have never installed HyperEdit.

Absolutely. In fact I posted this message last week in this thread, which was basically a "complaint" that the exactly kind of entry you've submitted seemed to be "excluded" by the rules - but I was talking about doing it by actual launches:

Question: Do the asteroid parts count as stock?

I don't see why they wouldn't be! The NASAmission folder is a separate folder in Gamedata, but it's included in the main download, so it is officially part of the game.

Here is another trophy we made. It was my design and I just wanted to share it here. In the end we decided to submit the other trophy.

The new challenge will be interesting, only stock parts.

Omg, it's so beautiful! I would have voted that first place, and considering all my votes matched the final outcome, it probably would have won as well.

Guys, I've been asked this question through PM earlier, but I wanted to answer it here to clarify this. All footage featured in the challenge must be in game. No external footage and nothing you cannot achieve on your own sans-mods in the game.

Can I use images of [CENSORED]? I have a feeling that the answer will be no, but it would help my video out a tremendous deal.

I have a feeling that the answer will be no, I'm just checking.

(by the way, sorry for the mini-spoiler. I hope this didn't give away anything, and I didn't mean to if so.)
