Rescue-able Kerbals

In case you guys haven't seen the solution, hit [ or ] to cycle between active flights (the stranded kerbal is a flight)

I wish I could get rid of these contracts and not have them keep showing up. I'm starting the space program, how the heck are there kerbals in orbit?

I think it's the beginning of a new player experience, of sorts. It's to get a player used to the idea of planning rendezvous. Really, it's about time Squad started implementing some sort of integrated tutorial, rather than just say "Okay, here's the game, gl hf! :D"

Can someone inform me how to rescue these little buggers? I brought an empty command pod to one via remote control, and then realized I couldn't take control of him to have him board. So... do I have to use a claw? That seems a bit ridiculous.

OP: The stranded Kerbals are spawned by the same mechanic used to spawn asteroids - so it seems to be a remnant of that and will most likely be gone at ... any of the next updates. :D

Yeah, I know, haha, just found it funny.

Did anyone else notice how the Kerbals that can be rescued are marked as Class-A asteroids?

Not to rain on your parade, but they're marked as class A objects, with Class A designated for the smallest size objects. And objects can be... well, anything, obviously!

I'm more amazed that there's a one year deadline on those contracts. “Yeah, poor Melfin is in orbit around Kerbin right now... just pick him up somewhere around Thanksgiving or Kristmas, that'd be great. He'll be quite hungry by thenâ€Â

I also wouldn't mind these contracts vanishing until a lot later. Let there be a space station up at least first.

I too hope the missions get pushed back a bit more in the spawn process. They come a little too early IMO. Also as has been mentioned the deadline needs to be reduced considerably. Mine have all had 5 years till I could go and pick them up. Can Kerbals go into hibernation in their spacesuits?? :)

I like to think kerbals are closely related to plants, like Zan out of Farscape. So long as they don't go without sunlight for too long, they last pretty much forever.

It does seem like the game should hold off on spawning them until you get a Kerbal into orbit on your own. The year deadline is pretty funny but makes sense given the current state of the game. If they ever add limitations like oxygen, water or food then they'll need to drastically cut down the time =p

For the first Kerbal I rescued, I believe that I had 12 hrs to rescue him. Then for the second, the contract expired in something like a year, and I had 4 years to get him. No big deal. It is pretty neat that after you rescue them they become a member of your space program.

Actually that part is the one that bothers me the most. I've only had a few hours to play, and am thus still in the beginning stages of the space program; given that I've received two such missions already, it seems with the frequency at which stranded Kerbals spawn I'm doomed to end up with a space center crawling with hundreds upon hundreds of idle crew members milling about.

(NO I WILL NOT KILL THEM OFF!)

...my suggestion is that either they become Applicants or at least there's a button in the message window allowing one to choose whether to hire the rescuee.

This would actually be interesting if we ever get to a point where we have to worry about, like, salaries and stuff. Have dudes you hire cost x funds per week, but dudes you rescue from orbit work for free out of gratitude

But you don't need to have any Kerbals laying around until just before a mission. And you wouldn't need to (or be able to) pay some random crew members orbiting Eeloo. It would be a bit much of a breach in logic to get a salary system working as simply as possible, and any more effort to enhance the feature isn't really necessary. What *might* work is having to pay a stipend to killed Kerbals' families, but that is kind of already in place with the loss of reputation.

It's not the fact that there are Kerbals in orbit that bothers me, it's the sheer amount of Kerbals in orbit. Geez, you can't go through one day without getting another contract, telling you to rescue yet another stranded Kerbal! Are there companies that do nothing all day except for launching innocent kerbonauts into space and paying us to return them?
