Any of you guys get the rescue a kerbal in orbit mission when you only have a one man pod unlocked?

Yup. Easy enough to do, just stick two command pods together. You can either put them nose to nose, or stack them using a decoupler. Top pod gets one parachute, lower pod gets two radial chutes. Land them together as one ship or fire the decoupler and land them separately.

I've made half a million credits just rescuing stray Kerbals with this method. Now i have the stayputnik so jeb can go off to the mun now or something. They should really stop giving rockets to all these random kerbals if they are just going to lose them all the time......

But declining makes me feel like less of a man! I prefer catastrophic failure :D

So even the man himself says it's not a bug.... I'm going to build the biggest, ugliest ship and drag one off the launch pad. Can 1 clamp hold the ship down or will it just break eventually?

The clamp will hold, but something from the ship will probably break off while the rest of the ship flys up offballance and crashes

Well, I managed to uproot a clamp before. :) Though that was in RSS, with the Energia rocket (100T to LEO, anyone?). That was BobCat's model, meaning it had few parts and as such was very sturdy.

That said, it's probably doable in stock. You just have to build a large enough rocket. :)

I for my part use 2 pods connected by a modular girder segment, which gets 1 radial chute on each of its 4 sides ... this way both Kerbals can land together

You will deservedly lose reputation for accepting a mission from someone who is obviously crazy!

Although now I want to see Whackjob build something to tow Kerbin up to the Mun by the launch clamps just so he can test them

It's really starting to get ridiculous how people exaggerate Whackjob's abilities. It would obviously be easier to just land the Mun on Kerbin.

You would have to land the moon right at the KSC though, which is going to complicate things. If you're towing Kerbin, you can hit anywhere on the Mun to perform the test. And you'e got to get the fuel for your Mun-tug to the moon. My idea is clearly far more practical than yours!

I'm not quite sure about either, though. I mean, the launch clamps would have to be attached to the Munar surface to truly count as landed on the Mun, right? Then how exactly would you flip them around and put them in place afterwards?

The answer is simple. we blow up Kerbin. It was obstructing my view of Venus anyway.

**snip**

you mean Eve though right? :P you would have to push kerbin into the mun. cause if you try and pull it from the launch pad your engines would be blocked.... much like your view of EVE!

Actually, the impossibleness of the proposal is by no means unrealistic... if you ever worked in software development, you'll know that sort of request is actually pretty mild, considering... :D

That got one heck of a laugh out of me.

I wouldn't go as far as calling this a bug, although it is a pretty impossible proposition. This is why we also have a 'decline' button...

I'm hoping you guys have a solution for this in the next release?

Heh, I made one of those myself back in .23 -- Some miscalculations (and obsessive near-science altitude checking) on a Minmus mission at very low tech ran poor Bill out of gas, though I got him closer by getting out and pushing to a munar gravity assist. The rescue craft just had two pods, with the rescue pod having a small tank and engine of its own so they could return separately. All that science is still up there, though...The kerbals should do do another rendezvous to retrieve it from the pod and goo cans.

If you have the Stayputnik, you can put it on top of the command pod. It looks nice.

I did that one time and the damn game kept putting Jeb in the command pod, which I noticed when the new guy couldn't get into the pod. In the end I stacked the pods and decoupled at 750m for a soft landing.

Thinking of a possible solution. Build a probe attached to the launch clamp. Protect the probe core with lots of ablative armor.

Then Launch another craft on the run way or have one on standby near the pad to act as a sledge hammer. See if you can break it lose by ramming it, but not destroying the core.

Then get a third ship with the grabby claw to haul it to the Munn
