Nope, not just Australia for "soft drinks." There's good data on this for the U.S.: Dialect Survey Maps (question #105). An older version of the map listed "soft drink" instead of other, and that was the response for about 1/4 of the people in both major cities I've lived in.

In Hungary soda means carbonated water, and pop means music like Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

An interesting convergence on Arkansas vocabulary is that old people call every kind of sweet soft drink "Cola". Fanta is called "Yellow Cola". Probably because the first Western-style soft drink in Hungary was Cola.

I call it Dr. Pepper, 7Up, Shasta, Pepsi, or Ginger Ale. Because I refuse to drink any other soft drinks. anyone who drinks coca cola is a nerd and a theif and a commie

In N. Ireland, they are sometimes known as "minerals". Otherwise, soft drinks.

Soda is American, and pop is Enid Blyton (famed for writing fiction that was out of date at the time it was published).
