Single Thruster Challenge: Mun and back with only one engine!!!

Recommended Posts

Just another way...

Planned to land just the can but I had plenty of dV so landed it all using the chute and the engine.

Great work! I imagine the final pod had some insane TWR :P.

Thanks for giving the challenge a go!

Cas.

First staging event occurs at about the altitude of the water tower.

I don't know exactly why but I love everything about this sentence.

Hah, a challenge where one of my videos is a totally legal entry:

While super impressive, this does break the rules of the challenge. Two of your three parts are thrusters.

Scratch that. I only started watching when I replied :D

Whoops. I missed the Mun.

Also, if you don't have a badge, you could probably ask Ziv.

Very cool vid. I like the... interesting way you landed both on Duna and Kerbin :)

Awesome work Overfloater! Thanks for giving the challenge a go :). Really impressed that you managed to do it without a jet engine or exploity methods.

Also that use of the sepatrons is absolutely fine, and if anyone wants to employ stuff like that go nuts, just as long as they don't power your actual ship :).

Cas.

Thanks! but why you say no exploity methods?

I heavily exploited asparagus staging, and lightweight parts. (tiny decouplers that don't match with the rocket diameter)

Simple spaceeplane, in low orbit is about 3150m/s Delta, which is quite enough for a flight to the Mun with the return

(Frame from the first flight with the autopilot, it is attached specifically to calculate DeltaV)

You would be better of if you detached the wings after you left the atmosphere.

Sorry I meant like more physics-y exploits like infiniglide or Kerbal ladder power, not that those aren't totally cool to use :). Just as long as you only have one single part creating thrust (a single control surface or a single Kerbal on a ladder) then the challenge is satisfied :D.

Thanks again for completing the challenge and contributing! :)

  • 3 weeks later...

I know I'm late to this challenge, but I didn't have internet at home at the time...

Now I have, so I'll upload some pictures! I really like this challenge! The landing took me a second time as the glue between my engine and my craft couldn't handle the landing... Everybody deserves a second chance, right? :P

Great work Speedy! Thanks for giving the challenge a go :) As for second chances, I once tried to make a "fly through a Mun arch at orbital speeds" challenge. If someone managed that without any extra tries I would go absolutely spaghetti.

Said challenge was abandoned in the interests of sanity. And Kerbals. Manned missions were not the best for that...

I've given it a go as well.

I wanted to try it with an LV-T30, but I just couldn't get it to work. Not wanting to let my work go to waste, I used a Skipper engine, and slapped 3 of the stages I had made for the other engine on the side. Amazingly, it worked first time.
