Star Wars 7

I never got star wars, I really don't understand the appeal

There's no science in it and none of the vehicles or locations look in any way real or used.

And then there's the story, space princesses, evil lords and planets of teddy bears

it makes the telletubbies look like deep social commentary

You should not look at StarWars as science fiction but rather as fantasy set in the future instead of the dark ages.

I think that's one of the things I can't get past

It's hailed as a sci fi classic but imo really can't be put into the same category as Alien or Blade Runner and it's just not my cup of tea

but each to their own, as this is a thread for fans I'll bow out at this point :)

Looks good, though sparse. Nice to see the Millennium Falcon again.

And I hope the fact that they showed a woman means that there'll be more than one in the entire trilogy.

I'm old enough that I remember when the first Star Wars (back when it was still called just "Star Wars", rather than "Star Wars Episode IV") was playing in the theaters. Almost... They must have re-released the first one in theaters before Empire Strikes Back came out because that's about the time that I saw it. My parents took me to see it then, but I didn't get to see Empire Strikes back until after I saw Return of the Jedi. They were THE movies of my childhood, so any of the newer episodes had/will have a tough time living up to expectations. That said, I am looking forward to this one. I'll be there on opening weekend. Maybe not dressed up in a costume (as I am sure some will be), but I'll be there.

Star Wars is a fairy tale, not a science fiction story!

It's just the setting which looks like scifi. The force is just another word for magic.

Again? How long can they kick that dead horse? Hoverbikes, spaceships flying, sand dunes, mighty space warriors helping nice and cute sassies a proletarian revolution on yet another planet... Oh come on!!!

The old ones looked cool and impressive at least in the 80s and early 90s. I guess they won't pass nostalgy test today, but as a kid I liked them. Not having video recorder, I loved every showing on TV.

The new trilogy (I could see them in AVI on local networks to decide if it was worth going to cinema) seemed a CG fest. "Look what we can do with this!" But the plot was not appealing.

And here we go again. From 5 years ago I completely stopped watching fresh movies. Most of them is just profusely advertized crap.

I grew up on Star Wars and lived through the hype crapstorm that was the build-up to Episode I.

Meh. I'll catch it when it's out on video.

First reaction:

My expectations went way down with the Millennium Falcon "look what we can do with camera angles" thing.

Second reaction:

So, Episode III was set 19 years before Episode IV, and Episode VII is set 30 years after Episode VI.

In the less than two decades the Empire was in power, the technology increased, and we saw different ships being used in the two eras.

In the three decades since the fall of the Empire, technology seems to have stagnated, and we're seeing the same X-Wings, TIE Fighters, and YT-1300 as before.

Wow. The New Republic really didn't have their stuff together.

It was definitely a teaser and not a fully trailer, wasn't it?

I liked it. Abrams' hand is clearly visible in the camerawork, and it's refreshing. Lucas would have never changed his obsession with SteadyCam-driven fantasy optics, but I love the intensity it brings--we haven't seen that cinematic perspective in the Star Wars universe before.

It's certainly not going to be just another trio of prequels, and goodness knows I appreciate that. At this point, I'm not going to insist that Abrams match the originals, just that he makes something better than Ep-I and Ep-II.

You just realized that? 99% of the stuff that happens in the EU after Endor is because the rebel alliance never had any other plans than oh we have to stop the "evil" empire.

In fact they're responsible for the yuuzhang vong being as terrible as it was. If the empire would have been in power when they invaded it would have been a border skirmish.

That's the problem right there. I never kept up with the EU. I read the Zahn trilogy, and a handful of others. That's one of the problems with a group of authors sharing a universe. You get some good ones and some bad ones, and with so many putting out books, it becomes too much effort to figure which is which and find time to keep up on reading. Especially if you need to read some of the not so good ones to know what's going on in others.

With star wars EU only the thrawn trilogy and x wing series are worth reading. Other than that the books basically follow the exact plot of the movies.
