help with symmetry

Recommended Posts

I encountered difficulty just now when I tried to make a new SSTO. As the picture below shows, for some reason the engines won't attach on the same side of the wing with mirror symmetry. I tried using R to change symmetry options but it didn't work. Does anyone know how to fix this or whether it is a bug?

Press "R" to switch between radial and mirror.

Edit: Whatever part you are trying to attach the engines to was placed with Radial symmetry and not mirror symmetry, so that is why it defaults back to radial.

I was already doing that, the problem is that it automatically switches back to radial when I try to place stuff with mirror symmetry

Not sure it's a bug, just a limitation of the editor - if one part is attached with a symmetry mode all parts attached to it must have the same symmetry enabled (or no symmetry).

The parts I'm talking about were mounted inline with the root part, i.e. they had no symmetry.

Bug.

Maybe some pictures or a bit of an explanation that could help us recreate it to see if it's actually a bug? Or even give us the craft file.

Pfft. I don't save crafts that are broke, I bin them and start again.

Mess about in the SPH long enough and it'll happen. Try adding symmetrical parallel stacks with individually attached (not symmetry) engines. Then start adding wings - that's what I was doing at the time.

Yup, I've had the same issue. Had wings connected with mirror symmetry, and the engines on the wing would only attach in Radial symmetry. I used the usual workaround of attaching the engine without symmetry and then re-attaching the wing with mirror mode.

You can place parts inline with symmetry enabled. Maybe if you have symmetry enabled, they remember if they're radial or mirror, screwing up the stuff you attach to them.

That would be easy to test. I'm not running the game right now so can't but if nobody does by the time I do, I'll try it.

I had the same issue with landing gear, I found that the solution to the problem was removing my elevons that control my craft. For some reason, their presence was interfering with the snap alignment on the ship.

Welcome to the forums @swordfish23!

Just a quick tip... this thread was last posted in in 2014, and the OP has most likely solved his/her issue by now. It’s still generally OK to post in old threads as long as the topic is still relevant, but make sure to check the date of the last post before you make one.

I hope you stick around here though :D
