Welcome DavidBowman! Hope you'll get half the friendliness on these forums as the Iranians give to foreigners (my gf traveled to iran last year by herself and said people were incredibly friendly and hospitable, cant wait to go myself). Anyhow, enjoy the forums and give us a shout if you need any help :)

My god.. It's full of racism.

Welcome to the forums David Bowman. So, how did you get out of the monolith or are you broadcasting from inside a la 2010?

I frequently make jabs at the South Koreans for copying technology (the KDDX looks rather familiar to the british), and I'm Korean American.

It's called political satire.

(I believe you had implied sarcasm)

Anyways, I'm expecting some Europa landings, Bowman. :) :)

I'm curious, how do you get western media in Iran? If you can, Interstellar is good too.

Satellites!

And by Interstellar you mean the Interstellar Quest by beloved Scott Manley or Interstellar by beloved Christopher Nolan??

Welcome to the forums! It's always cool to see how much reach KSP has around the world.

Yeah! You wouldn't even believe how I found out about KSP!! Those who are unfamiliar with the law of truly large numbers would call it a "coincidence"!

I always thought of you guys as the acceptable face of the axis of evil :P

While there is nothing wrong with discussing a country (especially when someone is from there), please avoid making sweeping claims about any place even if in jest. It can sometimes be misinterpreted over voiceless, faceless text.

Welcome to the forums, DavidBowman! :D

Cheers,

@DavidBowman: Welcome to the forums man. I assure you that not everyone here considers "Dueling Banjos" to be the soundtrack to their lives :)

Thanks. I am well aware of that!

Welcome. You bring those monke.. I mean Kerbals back safe and sound, you hear?

They sent one monke...err...I mean Kerbal flying, then brought another one down. Now THAT'S what I call a space program! Take that NASA!! :D

Welcome! If you find any comments or anything in general offensive, that is what the triangle with the exclamation mark is for! Hope you have a wonderful time on the forum!

Thank you! And no, thus far I(as an individual) haven't been offended here.

(Love the avatar!)

And may I ask what you think of us now?

(Keep in mind that I'm not here to represent my country!)

Well, I have a positive view of Iranian people and culture, though I can't claim to know much about either. However I'm less positive about many of the actions of your government, though that applies to many countries. I thought Bush's Axis of Evil comment was deeply idiotic, and I never understood why those 3 countries were lumped together in that way (hence my last post).

But this isn't the place. I'm sorry for bringing up politics, and only continue now to answer your question. We have much more important issues to discuss, such as space....

So, what is the feeling amongst average Iranians towards space exploration, and towards your space agency? I read somewhere about the recent progress it has made (you've started launching stuff into LEO, right?). Are people excited about it? Is it the top story on TV news whenever they conduct a launch?

Space exploration is expensive. Sure, there have been some satellites and other stuff (which they're very proud of! As in like they're the first to shoot little monkeys in space cans!)

But even I, as a space enthusiast, wouldn't encourage these so called "advancements" at the moment. More important matters to spend money on than showing off monkey-catapulting skills!

(I wasn't aware of Bush's Axis of Evil comment!! In our media the US (government) is sometimes referred to as "The Great Devil"! How messed up is that?! )

Well there aren't many countries who can independently put stuff into orbit (including the UK, where I live), so this should be a source of pride for Iranians, even if it is not technologically ground breaking right now.

This criticism gets leveled at ISRO all the time, given the extent of the economic challenges facing much of India. But I don't really buy it. We live in a technological age, and advancing new capabilities - or improving existing ones - will bring long term economic benefits. All countries with space programs have other things they need to spend their money on, but I think it's important to keep pushing things forward, even if some parts of the economy are not keeping pace.

Yeah, both quite unhelpful things to say. It's remarkable how undiplomatic our governments can be. International diplomats trading schoolyard insults.

While I'm all for advancing space exploration, the Regime currently in control of Iran has demonstrated less than peaceful intentions. Allowing them to have an advanced space program carries the added risk of the North Koreans getting their hands on better rocket tech, since the two nations have been known to collaborate.

I know there were rumours of collaboration on the nuclear enrichment side of things, which if true is not ideal. But that could be viewed as an inevitable result of sanctions. This was definitely part of the negotiations with between Iran and the P5+1

Actually, I read recently that Iran has not 'officially' invaded another country in over 200 years [citation needed]. But I'm not about to start defending Iranian foreign policy! I certainly don't want Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, but the main reason for that is, if they do, the Pakistanis will provide the Saudis with a similar capability (KSA funded much of the Pakistani nuclear program for this reason). The two regional powers, who have been at loggerheads for so long, becoming nuclear armed is the last thing the Middle East needs.

With all due respect, I think we'd need another thread to discuss politics! (I really like the atmosphere here. Intelligent, semi-unbiased discussion of sensitive matters)

Are you being sarcastic or serious? Politics are an un-discussable IIRC. Sorry for derailing your welcome thread. :P

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
