The Second World War was one of the most devastating, life-threatening and horrifying military conflicts in the history of the human race, and yet it gave way to some of the most pioneering aircraft of their time, excelling in speed, range, armament and performance. Here are my takes at some of them. They are sorted by the nation that developed the aircraft.

Note that the aircraft built are slightly bigger than Kerbal scale but look alike nonetheless. All bombers have Kerbal pods at where gunners and other crew would be depending on their role. Each aircraft is based on a certain variant (commonly the most produced). Note that the propellers are static as well.

The most prominent Axis power of the war, the Empire of pedant Germany was the most crucial in the European Theater of World War II. Responsible for kickstarting what is known as the start of WW2 during the 1939 invasion of Poland, they were also arguably the closest to dominating Europe more than her own Allies.

Spoiler

Germany -- Luftwaffe

The most produced fighter in the war and often (incorrectly) called the Me 109, the Bf 109 is considered the most famous German fighter of the war, other than the Me 262 and Focke-Wulf 190.

Junkers Ju-87B "Stuka"

Another famed aircraft of the Second World War, this aircraft came out in the opening stages of the war and remained so throughout. It is a classic example of a dive bomber. A somewhat unique feature was that the first few variants had air-driven sirens attached to the fixed landing gear, and it would whine loudly as the aircraft dove, meant to intimidate those on the ground, although this was later removed. Nonetheless, it became a propaganda symbol about the successes of the Blitzkrieg.

Messerschmitt Bf 110

The Bf 110, often referred to misleadingly as the Me 110, was used as both a night fighter and heavy fighter, seeing combat during the Battle of Britain. After it was found to be ineffective, it was used as a Night Fighter instead, and was successful in this role.

C-4/B Variant (Fighter Bomber):

Focke-Wulf 190 D-9

Nicknamed "Würger" or "Shrike" in English, this aircraft was a nimble one-seat fighter, just as the Bf 109, and built to supplement it. It is one of the few German warplanes to use radial engines. It's performance was superior to even Allied fighters at the time, such as the Spitfire, at it's initial entry into war.

Heinkel He 111 H-6

The Heinkel 111 was perhaps the most extensively-used German bomber in the war, serving in almost every major German invasion, from Battle of Britain to Stalingrad. It became obsolete towards the end of the war, though, especially that the Luftwaffe was starting to become a defensive rather than offensive weapon, meaning the bombers had not much use. It also served as a paratroop, V-1 Transport, glider tug and some others.

Messerschmitt Me 262 A-1a

The Me 262 was the first ever fighter jet to become operational at 1944. It was plagued by engine problems due to the use of cheaper alloys, and wasn't able to have a major effect on the war, but was very advanced nonetheless.

Great Britain was arguably the first stumbling block of the Third Reich after a decisive attempt of the Luftwaffe to gain air superiority failed in the Battle of Britain, and soon became a vital combatant for the Allies.

Great Britain - Royal Air Force

Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vb

One of the most famous aircraft of the Second World War if not the most, the Spitfire has had great success in the war, and is regarded highly in this aspect. Considered similar to the Hurricane, the aircraft was continuously upgraded throughout the war

Hawker Hurricane Mk II

The Hawker Hurricane was another notable and famed British fighter along with the Spitfire, and developed with it at similar time periods. It was used more extensively than the Spitfire during the Battle of Britain, but the Spitfire soon surpassed it.

Avro Lancaster

The Avro Lancaster is perhaps the most significant British bomber of the Second World War, built with the Handley Page Halifax to satisfy the RAF's needs for four-engined bombers. It was derived from the earlier two-engined Avro Manchester.

Comes in two variants:

The United States was a crucial ally in WW2 for the Allies after Pearl Harbor and the declaration of Germany of war on the United States. Fighting on two theatres of war, they were able to fight back both the Third Reich and Japan, and became infamous for dropping atomic bombs on Japan causing a scale of destruction previously unmatched.

Spoiler

The United States

Boeing B-29 Superfortress

The most powerful fighter of the war, this aircraft was famous for dropping the famed atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki which caused a scale of devastation more horrifying than any other, driving the Empire into surrender.

Having started invading countries early starting with Manchuria in 1937, Japan was another significant Axis power who has early victories in the war, but couldn't fight back the United States from occupation, yet it remained the longest combatant in the war, fighting until even after the surrender of it's greatest ally.

Spoiler

Mitsubishi A6M2 "Zero"

The A6M Zero was one of the most prominent aircraft that fought in the Second World War and made by Japan. At the time of Pearl Harbor, it was superior to anything that the US Army and Navy had at the time.

What mod do they use for the rotating propellers?

nvm, it's just a jet

Yeah, sorry :(

How about a Bf-110? After flying it in War Thunder, it is now one of my favorite aircraft.

I was actually considering it, in fact, but I still don't have sufficient data about the aircraft yet -- How many bombs it can carry, where the gunners are located, and such. I do know it doesn't have a bomb bay, at least..

I know the Bf-100 has one gunner with a single MG facing the tail, similar to the Stuka. As for bomb load, don't think of it as "how many bombs can it carry" as much as "what is the maximum weight of bombs it can carry". It could easily be modified to carry several smaller bombs or to carry one or two bigger bombs, as long as the weight of the bombs didn't exceed specifications. Besides, the Bf-110 isn't very famous for being a fighter bomber, everyone knows it as a heavy fighter/bomber escort.

Well, sort of a bomber escort. The Blitz changed that...

That huge thing is a bomber escort? Wow..

I'll do more research on the aircraft.

I'm building a custom cockpit, and I see why you build in larger-than-kerbal scale. Nice planes, too!

Thanks!

What is the size of that Bf-110? It looks 5 times larger than the original

- - - Updated - - -

By the way, very nice planes!

But instead of 100% stock, they sure could use a KAX engine.

I decided to move to 2.5m for that reason, and thanks!

For the radial engined fighters and bombers, well, it would be certainly possible to create a KAX Variant, but for inline engines.. I'm not sure about that.

Really nice work Columbia! I was working on a P-38 and the VMR 253 Box Car but still not complete, although the Flying Box car I believe was only used in the Korean War

Thank you, and best of luck! :D I can't wait to see it!

Anyways, I got the bulk of the Bf 110 (The C-4 variant it seems) aloft, and now I need to decide between a night fighter or a fighter bomber.

What mod do they use for the rotating propellers?

If a propeller rotates to the right, the aircraft will rotate the other direction. With this the torque will be balanced, but the air is pushed in the same direction, so the useful thrust is basically doubled. The wiki page on this has more details in these designs.

I think you accidentally deleted them or something. I can't see them either.

Crap. When I save an edit, the albums show "Javascript is disabled. View full album" and I can click to it and it'll show.

But it doesn't appear when it's an actual working album.

Ah well, I'll resort to images.

- - - Updated - - -

I edited what i can, and am hoping for the best for the albums of the P-47 and P-38.

Welcome to the forum, varunvikki! Unfortunately we don't have a real airflow in KSP, so a lot of aerodynamic rules from real life do not apply here. For example: prop wash and turbulence does not exist.

The aircraft in this topic don't have rotating propellers. If you take a look at my topic (in my signature) you can learn all about rotating propellers and rotors using stock parts only, and the turboshaft engine, which I invented in KSP.

Yes, Azimech's right. Sorry, I forgot to reply to your comment.

The Bf-110 was most successful as a night fighter, so I would push for that. I found out that it can carry an external payload of up to 1,100 pounds.
