How to the dots work?

I was going to be mean and confirm that I only see four dots, but... it's a Star Trek reference, that is also a 1984 novel reference.

I noticed that I had a new dot (bringing me up to four) once I got to 500 posts. Based on a few looks, it seems that the thresholds are probably:

0-9 posts: 1 dot

10-99 posts: 2 dots

100-499 posts: 3 dots

500-999 posts: 4 dots

1000+ posts: 5 dots, 4 in that giant scary prison pyramid.

IIRC, I heard someone say that it was a marker for how many posts you had relative to the other users. That makes sense to me, because you can get your first few dots pretty quickly, but then you need to keep posting and they come slower.

I see and have always seen 4 dots for me and others with more than 1000 posts. I assumed that the 5th dot came after 1500 posts... 

Edit: using Chrome, and just checked with Edge, still 4 dots, are you sure you had your glasses on ?

Except in this case, Big Brother wants you to see five instead of four. It's the inverse of what happened in the book, so it's confusing.
