  1. Historical Progression Tech Tree This tech tree is designed to take you through the history of the human space program. I always felt like the stock tech tree was lacking and did not like the placement of the parts. There are other tech trees that utilize the stock tech tree and move parts around and that is what inspired me to create a new tech tree like this. The tree will start you with Unmanned parts before you progress to learning how to send Kerbals into Space safely. What I did with this tree is create a linear approach to Research. The entire tree is broken down into space associated disciplines so you are not required to research new fuel tanks before you get bigger and better engines. This allows the player to drive their research focus. If you as the player wants to get the next tier of electronics to support your craft, you have that option. TECH TREE BRANCHES ROCKETRY Rocket Engine Parts JET ENGINES Jet Engine Parts FUEL TANKS Rocket Fuel Tanks Liquid Fuel Tanks Advanced Fuel Tanks AERODYNAMICS Fairings Advanced Wings Nose Cones Intakes ENGINEERING Adapters Decouplers Landing Gear Service Bays Fuel Ducts Docking Ports Rover Wheels FLIGHT CONTROL Probe Cores RCS MonoProp Tanks Winglets Reaction Wheels CREW SUPPORT Command Pods Cockpits Parachutes Heat Shields Life Support SCIENCE All Science Parts ELECTRONICS & COMMUNICATIONS Power Generation Power Storage Antennas Heat Control TECH TREE TIERS The tiers are organized from left to right and are listed in numerical order. These are the tiers and the corresponding years that I have used for the placement of the parts. TIER 1: 1956 and Earlier This only includes the starting node with many more parts moved to the starting node than in Stock. There are also a node for Wings and Structural Pieces to remove them from the other nodes. TIER 2: 1957 - 1958 This was the era when we moved from Sounding Rockets to ICBM's and finally to our first satellites like Sputnik and Explorer 1. TIER 3: 1959 During this time, humans successfully flew by the Moon with the Luna program as well as developed the first techniques of returning capsules from space. TIER 4: 1960 - 1963 These years are when Manned spaceflight first happened. Yuri Gregarin became the first person in space and in orbit, with Vostok 1 and the US launched astronauts in the Mercury Program. The first unmanned missions to another planet took place with flybys of Venus. TIER 5: 1964 - 1966 This tier was when we progressed from single manned flights to multiple people in the same spacecraft. The duration of the flights in space increase from short times to up to two weeks. The techniques used to rendezvous and dock ships together were devloped during these years as well as the first landing on the Moon with Luna 9. TIER 6: 1967 - 1971 We landed men on the Moon! This was the ultimate goal of both the US and USSR and the technology developed for huge rockets to launch men to the Moon as well as other unmanned spacecraft to Mars and Venus. TIER 7: 1972 - 1979 This was the time when humans learned how to live in space. The Soviets launched their Salyut space station program and the United States did the same with Skylab. The first missions to the outer planets also took place with Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Viking 1 also became the first successful landing on Mars. TIER 8: 1980 - 1993 The Space Shuttle Era where we concentrated on living in Low Earth Orbit. The Soviets launched the Mir space station which was the first modular space station. TIER 9: 1994 - 2005 Long-term space habitation and rovers on Mars was the major focus during this period. Pathfinder became the first rover on another planet, humans lived for more than a year on Mir, and the construction of the International Space Station began. TIER 10: 2006 - 2020 Back to the Moon or on to Mars? New technologies are being developed by many companies to provide the tools needed for humans to get back to the Moon and to also look to Mars as well. TIER 11: 2020 - 2050 Near future technologies. These are experimental things that are in development right now that may one day help us reach farther than we ever have before. TIER 12: 2050 and beyond These technologies have not been developed yet, or they are just on the drawing board. Things like Warp Drives and FTL travel and Nuclear Fusion will take us to the stars. 4. Tired of the stock silliness, but Realism Overhaul is just too much? Wish there was something in-between that kept some of the stock style but didn't require 50+ mods and 15,000+ Module Manager patches? If you feel that way, then this mod is for you. This is my project to remake the rocket and spacecraft side of KSP to use real-life rockets, spacecraft and probes from the past, present and future, along with elements of realism, but without all the massive complexity, mod requirements and high patch count of Realism Overhaul (which is awesome, but can be simply TOO much). This is not a mere parts add-on, it will eventually be a revamp of most of the stock game (well, except for the plane parts, which won't be affected too much). Among the major changes that are involved : > The rocket and space parts will be drastically replaced, altered or deleted, replacing the lego-style system with specific parts for each rocket and spacecraft type. Many will be modelled by me, but some existing stock and mod models will be used as well. They will not be 100% exact replicas, but generally simplified and close enough for the purposes of this project. > All rockets and spacecraft will be at (generally) 64% scale of the real ones. This means no standardized tank diameters and such, each will be at the proper 64% scale size. For example, the Soyuz parts are not 1.875m, but 1.72m for most; the Saturn V and Apollo CSM will be 6.4m, 4.23m and 2.5m (which already is 64% scale of the 3.9m Apollo). > Engines and fuel tanks/stages will use different fuel types, depending on what it used in reality. No one fuel type for everything. There will even be a separate fuel type for the jet engines, as well as for automotive engines. Ozidizer-Fuel ratios will also be different for various engine families and for different fuel types. > Reaction wheels will be removed from manned and unmanned spacecraft, as well as aircraft cockpits, and the standalone ones reduced in strength and restricted the late career/tech tree phase...if not removed entirely. RCS is what most spacecaft use or have used, and what will have to be used for attitude control and translation in this Simple Overhaul. The exceptions will be for certain kinds of space stations that used/use them in reality. > Launch pads and towers in simplified form will be included for some of the rockets, to make them seem even more real. > Surface attachment will be disabled for many parts, and the ones that normally are surface-attached will either be node-attached (e.g. solar panels), integrated into another part (like science instruments/experiments), or eliminated entirely. > The tech tree will be changed completely, replacing the typical generic-style tech nodes with ones for specific rockets, spacecraft and probes. > New custom resource and science definitions, and stock ones modified. > The stock solar system has been altered to one based on the real one (but not exactly), but still using the existing planet and moon assets. Kerbin now has a 24-hour rotation period, and alternate launch sites have been added, with the stock KSC site removed. * Change Log * > 0.01 Initial dev partial release. Soyuz-KG rocket and Soyuz-KMA spacecraft parts, along with a small sampling of the changes to the stock game. *** INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS *** *** IMPORTANT NOTE **** Do NOT use an existing save or craft file with the AlphaMensae Simple Overhaul. When completed, the full version WILL break saves and existing craft in various ways from minor (and possibly funny) to total carnage (not very funny). The initial release is mainly about the Soyuz, but there are some changes to existing stock stuff already implemented that could make for rude surprises. The AlphaMensae Simple Overhaul requires the use of some other mods in order to work. One of them, KSC Switcher, is included in the AlphaOverhaul.zip file; both 1.2.2 and 1.3.x versions are included. The other mods must be installed separately. 1. Download and install AlphaMensaeOverhaul: https://github.com/AlphaMensae/Simple-Overhaul-Project/files/1595546/AlphaOverhaul.zip Copy the AlphaOverhaul folder from the .zip into your KSP Gamedata folder. NOTE: If you want to use SSRSS, GPP or some other total-conversion planet pack, do not copy over the AlphaOverhaul/SolarSystem folder; use the planet pack's configs instead. 2. Select which version of KSC Switcher you want to use, either the 1.2.2 or 1.3.x one, and copy the folder to your Gamedata folder. 3. Download and install Kopernicus: https://github.com/Kopernicus/Kopernicus/releases 4. Download and install Sigma Dimensions: https://github.com/Sigma88/Sigma-Dimensions/releases 5. Other required mods that must be downloaded and installed: Module Manager (if not included elsewhere, absolutely needed above all else) Kerbal Joint Reinforcement (the Simple Overhaul is developed with KJR installed, no guarantee that it will work with the stock autostrutting) Modular Rocket Systems (for certain part models, may be eliminated in future versions) Space-Y Lifters (for certain part models) Discontinued Parts (strictly for the pre-1.0.5 Mk1 Cockpit) Community Tech Tree (for now, CTT needs to be installed) Take Command Continued (for the early career phase) MechJeb (the Mechjeb module is incorporated into certain spacecraft) While technically not a requirement, the use of Kerbal Engineer Redux is strongly recommended. This mod is being shared under the CC-BY-NC-SA license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ Notes: The intial scale for the solar system is stock scale; later on I will develop configs for other scales, and eventually a conversion for real-scale/10x. All the rockets in this mod are being designed to launch from the 24-hour day Kerbin that is part of the included solar system changes, as well as from non-equatorial launch sites. The delta-V needed to reach orbit from the stock-scale Kerbin is already ratther low that I feel getting a rotational boost is not needed. In addition, certain rockets (like the Soyuz and other Soviet/Russian ones) also are designed to launch from a specific launch site latitide. Hence, they will have more delta-V needed if launched from the stock Kerbin or some faster-rotating home planet like the SSRSS Earth or GPP Gael. The rockets are also designed for a single burn to orbit, without any of the usual stock coasting. This is done by keeping your time to apoapsis less than a minute, and when you reach your desired orbit altitude, pitch over so the time to apo starts decreasing, ideally reaching zero when your periapsis is at the desired altitude. The stock launch clamps and the pads/towers I make will have the generator in the "off" position, and must be manually switched on. This allows you to switch to internal power at a point in a countdown. My links: Twitch Youtube
  5. [WIP] Stock Historical Tech Tree Firstly, I don't expect this to be released for a while, but I will use this page to keep you updated! Have you ever raged at Squad's terrible tech tree? Do you not want to have to install millions of mods for another tech tree? Do you miss BTSM? Then this mod is for you! Experience the wonders of a balanced tech tree with Stock Historical Tech Tree! Start with basic parts like the Stayputnik and the Flea and go to conquer the Heavens! Also, because of strict Krademark laws, we have to develop our own aircraft parts.

  7. Project Gemini, NASA's second human spaceflight program designed to test the hardware for use with Apollo and its associated moon shot. Real life backstory and information KSP (with pictures from real life to the corresponding images) On May 25th 1962 the challenge to land a man on the moon and return him safely to the earth had been set. At the end of Project mercury, after Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper had flown aboard Faith 7. At the end of the program NASA originally planned to use Apollo to test hardware for the moon. as that wasn't ready, a mercury MK-2 capsule was proposed, this was to be the capsule we now know as Gemini. Gemini 1 was a test mission and so was Gemini 2, Gemini 1 was intentionally burned up on re-entry, Gemini 2 was a test of the heat shield this was successful . Gemini 3 the first of the manned mission with the capsule "The Molly Brown" as a reference to the survivor of the titanic disaster Molly Brown, and because Virgil "Guss" Grissom's capsule had sunk. However the original crew were: Alan Shepard and Tomas Stafford The capsule's code name was GLV-3 12558 Gemini 3 patch FLIGHT: The only major issue was the famous case of the space corned beef sandwich that John Young had smuggled into the capsule i hope you enjoy please let me know how i could improve. also huge thanks to all of the people on the forum that have helped make my first year here special THANK YOU! GEMINI IV Gemini 4, James McDivvit and Edward White, the first spacewalk by an American. With the first rendesvouz attempt which failed because of the lack of practical training White would be the second man to "walk" in space, and the first American to do an EVA. He enjoyed the experience and was reluctant to return inside the capsule, he did eventualy and on the 48th orbit they planned to re-enter the computer failed so on the 62nd orbit they did a rolling re-entry which was used in Project Mercury EVA in KSP, all i have because well more important parts are in the Gemini 3 section OH HI KSC! Next mission will be done in around an hour: Apollo 7 (Although the Gemini program is interesting Apollo is my main focus)
  8. 60 Years ago, the "Sputnik" satellite has been launched into low earth orbit. Little probe was lifted by a rocket, with an edenticall name- Sputnik. This achievement blast-waved though the world, starting the new era.. The era of space exploration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Help me add more images to this by PM-ing me.
  9. Cold War Progression a Techtree mod for KSP (artwork & download link images stolen with permission from @DiscoSlelge & @CobaltWolf, respectively) KSP CWP aims to bring you a techtree experience that is balanced between historical and technological progression, but with a catch - you need to pick which side of the iron curtain your space program will be on! Choose wisely! Mod Support: Licensing: Click here for the roadmap!
  10. Welcome to the Kerbal Historical series! Flights in chronological order- 1957- Sputnik 1 1957- Sputnik 2 1958- Explorer 1 1958- Vanguard 1 1958- SCORE Flights in posting order- 1957 Sputnik 1 Sputnik 1 First man-made satellite in orbit, it was launched with a modified R-7 Semayorka rocket from Baikonur Kosmodrome in what is now Ukraine. It was simple in design, being a small 23 inch diameter sphere with 4 radio antennas attached to the side, transmitting a now-iconic ' beep-beep-beep-' signal. It orbited for 92 days, burning up in the atmosphere on 4 January 1958. The satellite was designed by Sergei Korolev and the scientists at OKB-1 design bureau. It was originally intended to be a more complex satellite given the name Object D, with scientific instruments onboard, including instruments used for detecting solar wind, magnetic fields and cosmic rays. The Soviet leadership ultimately chose to launch the much simpler Sputnik 1 due to shortcomings in the R-7's launch capacity and time constraints as there was pressure to launch a satellite before the Americans, who had announced that they would launch a satellite in time for the 1957 International Geophysical Year. Object D was later launched as Sputnik 3. It was mostly a propaganda victory over the Americans, but it was used for some scientific purpose despite not being equipped with scientific equipment, as the density of the upper atmosphere in which it orbited could be determined by measuring the satellite's orbit through it's beeps. Without further ado, my KSP recreation. It consists of ~400-500 parts including launch pad, which takes up most of the part count. Gets to orbit with some fuel left. The four launch clamps slide away from the rocket and Sputnik 1 launches from Baikonur LC-1 launch pad at 4 October 1957, 19:28:34 UTC. The boosters separate in formation, frequently known as the Korolev Cross, and the core stage continues to orbit. The fairing for Sputnik 1 actually separated the moment Sputnik was released from the core stage, but I forgot to do this. Sputnik goes into orbit transmitting the 'beep-beep-beep' signal over the world, or at least the parts which it orbited over, galvanizing the Americans and truly starting off the Space Race. Next Episode- Explorer 1, America's first successful foray into orbit. Planned- Explorer program, Vanguard program, SCORE
  11. BlackWolf Aerospace eXperimental - ROMBUS Kerbal Space Program Mod by Lupinarius BWA-X - ROMBUS Curse Forge: http://kerbal.curseforge.com/projects/bwa-x-rombus-pack Spacedock: http://spacedock.info/mod/743/BWA-X - ROMBUS GitHub: https://github.com/Lupinarius/BWA-X/releases License: CC-BY-SA-4.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) This is my first Mod for KSP and is still changing, but it is primarily stable and has been tested for playability. This Mod contains the following parts: * three custom pressurized toroidal LFO tanks * two fun "Cube" tanks not associated with the ROMBUS * one large and one small high temperature parachute. * two adapter Service Module tanks, 2.50m to 3.75m and 1.25m to 2.50m * two "Size 3" 36 port Truncated Aerospike engines, one each in LFO and Hydrolox with a 6:1 Fuel/Oxidizer Ratio (See Historical Note Below) * three different length "Size 3" LFO tanks, and three in Hydrolox, with 6:1 Ratio to match the engines * two decoupling, radially attached cryogenic tanks containing a 6:1 LH2/LOx mix by default This Mod requires and includes the following dependencies: Module Manager Website: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/55219 Source Code: https://github.com/sarbian/ModuleManager License: CC BY-SA 4.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) Community Resource Pack Website: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/83007-11-community-resource-pack-050-hydrates-and-gypsum/ Source Code:https://github.com/BobPalmer/CommunityResourcePack License: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/) This Mod recommends the following mods: Crossfeed Enabler (Pre KSP 1.05 Only) Website:http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/69286-10-crossfeedenabler-v33-may-11/ Source Code:https://github.com/NathanKell/CrossFeedEnabler/ License: CC BY-SA 4.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) Modular Fuel Tanks Website:http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/64117 Source Code:https://github.com/NathanKell/ModularFuelSystem License: CC BY-SA 4.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) I have created two separate module configuration files for MFT which are located in the Modules subfolder and they are called, "BWAX_modularFuelTanks.cfg" and "BWAX_TankTypes.cfg" Historical Note Background When I first decided to take up modding KSP I found a very interesting, although unfinished tutorial about how to create parts in Blender/Unity. Just like the creator of the video (YouTube handle is TechyBen) I was interested by the unusual shapes of the tanks in the tutorial. I was actually so intrigued by them that I decided that I must find out what spacecraft they were from, and that I must make something like it to share with others in KSP. It took me a while but I did finally find out what proposed space vessel those fascinating tanks belonged to, and have also created the basic parts to make a vehicle similar to it's small first run version. It was the ROMBUS vehicle. THE ROMBUS Phil Bono of Douglas Space and Missiles Company (later McDonnell Douglas), designed the ROMBUS vehicle in the 1960's as part of what would become the Douglas Saturn Application Single Stage To Orbit or SASSTO vehicle concept. This vehicle was designed at the same time as the NEXUS booster and first ORION concepts. It had a much larger military based variant called ITHACUS and the PEGASUS was to be a civilian point to point sub-orbital model. this later spawned the HYPERION which later contributed to the PHOENIX B and it's developments eventually went into the very cool DELTA CLIPPER Project. A PDF about the history of the PHOENIX VTOL SSTO which includes some background about the ROMBUS and the Douglas SASSTO should be available at: http://www.1000planets.com/papers/phoenix-history.pdf FUTURE DEVELOPMENT If you can provide me with advice on any of these, or simply wish to give constructive feedback I am very happy to hear it! 1. Add animated covered parachute hatches to the top of the radial fuel tanks, so they can be used as a habitat when empty, like the original design. 2. Add limited emissive animation to the thrust ports on the engine, while maintaining the heat-shield animation ability. 3. Add texture switching and/or tank switching options via Firespitter or Interstellar Fuel Switch.
  12. While the name "asparagus staging" apparently barely predates KSP, the idea has been around a long time: And obviously it is harder than it looks like in KSP. The book I am quoting is from 1958 (presumably hastily published after the Sputnik launch). It is a nifty book I found in my parents old collection: being from 1958 it starts *everything* from first principles, without launching into extremely specialized engineering. I've looked through some fairly well stocked used bookstores for other Kerbal-type books on rocket science, but haven't seen anything close. http://www.amazon.com/Space-Flight-Early-thoughts-projections/dp/B0000CK2Z4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451578393&sr=8-1&keywords=space+flight+by+carsbie+adams [ps. Of course it should include trigger warnings for 1950s-type thoughts.]
