What is the proper way to use solid boosters?
Othuyeg replied to Parallax's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
A massive space plane can benefit from a SRB. Sometimes getting the speed up on the runway can be difficult in massive planes using just jet engines. However, balancing them in planes is very difficult. -
Large Spaceplane Escape System Idea

If you want to make sure it decouples, place separatrons at the front end of the rear part pointing either up or down. This will ensure that once decoupled, the two parts will part ways even if they might be going the same direction. The separators will push a gap between the parts and air resistance will take care of the rest. Don't put separators facing just forwards and backwards, make them split the two parts. Edit: this way you only need minimum amount of separators as the tiniest gap will be torn apart by the air resistance. -
Not a major concern for me...

Rescuing a stranded Kerbal
Othuyeg replied to pauix's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Sure, you can easily manouver a ship to him and switch to him.... but... I'd go bond villain on him. Maybe make some fancy rocket with a bunch of landing legs for grabbing the kerbal into the mouth of the ship. -
The Personal Reentry Vehicle Challenge
Othuyeg replied to MedwedianPresident's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Yup... it needs a rule "You must read all the rules." Anyways, I am going to be submitting my own attempt later -
Seats are for wussies. Real Kermen stand on top.
Othuyeg replied to cantab's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I believe that holding a ladder is not really classified as standing. -
The rules of the challenge define "starting from a stationary position, not taking off the ground at any point during the run"

H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
Othuyeg replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Okay... I believe this craft may be banned under the rules as the rules say "No sexually suggestive pictures" So... If you want to see the video, you have to find the place where I hide all of my streams. edit: seems like the stream is having problems uploading so it might take a while. edit 2: if you want to see it, search for something Totally inappropriate and shameful in my highlights. -

I'll even make a video, once I get time to fire up Kerbal. -
H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
Othuyeg replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
My doughnut craft ended up looking so much like something that a very frustrated scientist came up with (with the only intention of compensating for something) that I ended up adding spherical RCS tanks to its base and an RCS thruster to the top cone. The thing was majestic as it wobbled around in air above KSC. The RCS thruster exhaust jet really was the cherry on top of this... abomination. -
You seem to be using a massive amount of structural wings and wing connectors which do not give you lift really. You seem to also be lacking horizontal control surfaces. Also, the radial intakes are way less efficient than ram intakes. Also you need struts to reduce wobble, which those wings will inevitably have. It is very very heavy on the nose so I imagine lifting the nose will be impossible. You need to substitute structural wings with delta wings. Also that landing gear looks very unstable, even a small wobble or bending will prevent stable movement on the runway. The looks are cool, but it needs a lot of work if it is to be a viable space plane.

H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
Othuyeg replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I was going for the same approach after I noticed that the slinky challenge was infact the least fueltanks (i was going for the most... stupid me) I was going to use 4 tanks, 1 of them only liquid fuel and 3 fuel + oxidizer and below them a rapier engine. I never even bothered to see if it would work. -
Oh and just a note: those who did the challenge in the other thread, you can send your scores here as they will fill the requirements.

Regarding an earlier challenge in which I made an EVA from Minmus to Kerbin... It got stuck in my head so I went and did it again. This time with a some questionable tactics. Behold the Minmus-Kerbin EVA Accelerator: Video of the mission here: http://www.twitch.tv/othuyeg/b/511084778 You may want to skip alot of the aerobraking manouvers. -

I urge not to make any pyrotechnics or explosives at home and remember to abide by your local laws. I happend to have seen alot of people who have messed around with explosives and got hurt. Explosives will not forgive you for a beginners mistake, they will take your arm or your life just as they would take one on a battlefield. This is because I have served as an explosive explosive ordnance disposal technician. My word of advice is if you do decide to make something like this, do it only after having gone through every safety precaution twice. And then remember that if something goes wrong, one of the most likely things to go wrong is that the mixture catches fire and the burning gasses build up under the melting mixture and spray super hot goo all over the place, possibly igniting clothing etc.

H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
Othuyeg replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I started a separate challenge for us to compete over the minmus speed record in. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/72528-Minmus-speed-racing?p=1021928#post1021928 -
Jebediah has grown very fond of Minmus. The huge flat surfaces have captured his imagination. Jebediah loves speed almost as much as he loves snacks and therefore he has autohized the scientists to build the fastest wheeled vehicle imaginable and send it to minmus. A few very rich investors have also contacted KSP as they believe this could spark a massive business in Minmus tourism. Even televised racing competitions have been suggested. This here, guys and girls is our playground. Challenge: Beat everyone else with your rover. (don't take it too literally, we don't want violence.) - use STOCK parts on the rover, you can use non-overpowered parts etc. on your transport ship. No mod can interfere with the rover. - get a rover on minmus - Highest speed done with the rover on minmus wins (starting from a stationary position, not taking off the ground at any point during the run) - If the craft leaves contact with the ground, the run ends there and even if it returns back into ground contact the run has ended the moment it leaves ground. So no skipping off the ground. - It does not matter how you get there, just the end speed of the rover matters. Must however be sent there without cheats etc. (During transfer to minmus, Mechjeb can be used, even the autopilot.) - No cheats means, no unlimited fuel, unbreakable joints, etc. - must have some sort of wheels (a sledge/sleigh/sled will not do) and a kerbal attached to it during the speed run - No exploits - no cheats or godlike mods - Special pin awarded to those who keep their kerbal alive. Pins have been approved by health and safety department. (We still don't know who hired those people. We need to get rid of them.) Post as extensive evidence as possible. Video is naturally the best form of evidence, but screenshots may be the easiest. Scoring is easy. Highest speed during the run, while still connected to the ground, wins.

We may have to make it a spin-off challenge and make a separate thread for minmus racing. -
H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
Othuyeg replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
The challenge was posted just about 24 hours ago and therefore the competition has ended. Jimbimbibble, with his 800+ m/s is the winner. Congratulations. -
Best puzzle game ever made has to be Portal (1&2). The humor is just purely magical. It is something that everyone should play. If you want to almost completely disregard intellectual challenge, then you should look at the new Shadow Warrior. It is a remake of a classic 3d shooter and it has been made almost perfectly. They took the best bits from the old game (humor, fast action, relaxed atmosphere) and enhanced it with a great story that is told so very very nicely. Civilization 5. Just a great game and you will spend days and weeks and months playing it.

H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth

I was thinking more about if the time limit etc. are okay so it is not about who achieves it first.
