A new month, a new video! This time, my SRBs were forcibly confiscated and I was forced to improvise with NERVAs instead.
-
Today, I went to Duna using only the most efficient engines in the game.
-
Another video up! This time, I brought my SRBs to Eeloo! I've really got to get my account verified soon... These default thumbnails are just plain ugly.

Today, I went to Eeloo.

Eve Return 1.05 - In memory of the ERC
Stratzenblitz75 replied to Gojira1000's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Unfortunately, I never got to attempt the old Eve rocks challenge. (In fact, before 1.05, the only Eve landings I've done were with the command seat). So, now is the time to redeem myself! Does this count? -
Huh, I tried that as well, but it didn't seem to work. In fact, even though my signature is gone from my posts, the video content is still in the editor! However, I figured it out: Pressing "undo" made the video go away and now I can edit my signature... Whew, I was starting to think I was cursed.
-
Greetings! Recently, I tried to change my signature but I simply couldn't delete the video content inside of it. In the editor, I tried highlighting the video and pressing "backspace", but that nothing happened. Additionally, I tried to type in the editor and again, nothing happened. I even tried to insert an image into the editor and once again, nothing happened. At this point, I am at a loss of ideas. The only idea I have is that since I made this signature before the 2015 forum migration, it might be a bug with the new forums. So, could anyone tell me what is going on here? Is this a bug in the forums, or am I just missing something? If it is a bug, then is there a way for a moderator to remove the content from my signature so that I could edit it?

Splashdowns: An underused method of landing?
Stratzenblitz75 replied to glen.mack's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Ever since the water was changed in 1.05, I've preferred splashdowns to landing on the ground. You can get away with rougher landings, and thus, save on parts and mass. See my recent Eve mission as an example. I simply attached wings to capsule and landed it in the water. If I tried to land it land, then I would need landing gear or else explosions. -
Greetings! As part of my new-year's resolution, I wanted to get more serious about my Youtube channel. Before, I was very sporadic in my uploads: My Jool-5 mission video was released on June 7th, 2015 and my next video was released on Jan 1st, 2016! Its not like I was working on a video for 6 months either, I was just lazy. Now, I've become more settled with my video-editor and recording software and thus, I want to start releasing one video every month. To start the year off, I decided to go to Eve, but with a twist...

Today, I went to Eve for the first time in 1.05.

For video editing, I can't recommend Blender enough. Its free, open-source, and very powerful. It can be a bit difficult for a beginner though, so watch some tutorials to get started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te9HFQVaSUE For recording, OBS is a great free option as well. Once again, the settings can be a bit confusing, so check out some tutorials: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/how-to-make-high-quality-local-recordings.16/

Indeed, I have implemented that fix; it made the game run much better overall. However, it seemed to have no effect on my Eve surface FPS. Before the fix, it was unplayable. After the fix, well, its still unplayable. That is why I suspect the clouds are to blame for this. After all, I only get the massive FPS drops when I look at the clouds. The game runs smoothly when not looking at the clouds.

First off, I'd like to thank you for the incredible amount of effort you've put into the mod. The Kerbol System has never looked better. However, I'm having a big problem with the surface of Eve. At about 5000 KM above sea-level, the game grinds to a halt. I suspect the clouds are to blame to for this: whenever I look at the clouds, the frame-rate drops to unplayable levels, but, when I look at the sky, the game runs smoothly again. So, is there anything I can do to fix this? (Other than deleting the clouds, of course) There must be a config file somewhere that I can edit to increase performance here...

Indeed, I was using the better timewarp mod to speed to my transfer window. However, I also used tracking station with normal timewarp as well and the same thing happened. In that case specifically, I would click on my vessel from the tracking station, and "fly" it. Then, as soon as it loaded in, it would instantly explode, saying that it "crashed into launch pad". In other news, I've completed my mission and I haven't seen the bug again. So, the first launch must have been cursed, probably by the spirit of Tut-un Jeb-Ahn so that he could watch more explosions.

Short answer: No. An ion engine consumes 8.74 EC/s at full throttle, while a single radioisotope generator only provides 0.75 EC/s. If you want to run the ion engine at 1/10 throttle, then yeah, one generator would be enough, but I doubt anyone has the patience for that. Instead, the best solution for ion engines at that distance is probably just to use batteries. Z1-k batteries can provide 1000 EC each, which gives an ion engine almost 2 minutes of burn time. Adding 5 or so batteries would provide an ion engine for almost 10 minutes, which should be plenty of time to do an insertion burn (but It depends on how heavy your probe is). On top of that, the batteries are very lightweight; the previously mentioned Z1-k batteries have a mass of 0.05 tons, which is far less massive than a single gigantor solar panel. With this setup, you could probably get away with a single RTG to charge the batteries in between burns. If you want to see this setup in action, check my signature for my Jool-5 mission. There, I used an ion engine + batteries + a single small solar panel to power my return stage.

Well, If I'm understanding your plan correctly, I have a few bits of advice: 1. Why are you bringing 4 tugs on the mission? I know you are trying to land the tug on-top of the space-plane to refuel it, but this seems like overly complicated way to refuel something. I'd imagine it would be much simpler to just include a drill and an ISRU unit on the space-plane itself. Also, what are using to power the ISRU units? I haven't done any ISRU around Jool, but I've heard that those suckers are very power hungry, and that solar panels don't provide much juice at that distance. 2. What are you going to use to get into orbit around Laythe? Are you going to use engine power, or are you going to aero-brake? In the case of the later, I've found reentry heating to be very brutal in 1.05. You might want to consider heat shields if you haven't already. Additionally, make sure your space-plane can handle an interplanetary reentry at Kerbin on the way home or can carry enough fuel to slow down. To be more efficient, I would build a separate, smaller lander for Vall, Bop, and Pol. However, seeing as you're a space-plane addict, I doubt I would be able to change your mind on that one ;). Everything else seems fine though. As long as your crafts pack the necessary delta V (and the necessary TWR and power generation in the case of your Tylo lander), you should be good to go.

I've actually experienced this bug before as well. It was in version 0.25 I believe, and I was able to reproduce it consistently. Often, but not always, when I tested my aircraft, It would spawn inside the runway with no collisions. I could then fly it through the runway, and all the other KSC buildings as well. I'm not sure what was causing it since I had a lot of mods installed at the time... I think I may still have that old KSP version lying around. I'll have to boot it up and see if I can still reproduce it.
-
These days, I'm almost always optimizing for part-count. If option A is more efficient and costs less, but option B has significantly fewer parts, then I'll go for option B. Its the only way I can prevent the game from becoming completely unplayable. Beyond that, I usually choose function over form. I don't care how it looks, I just care that it works.

I have encountered the ship duplicating bug before, and I can safely say that bug is not at fault here. The flight log states that most of the parts of my spacecraft "Crashed into launch pad" while I was in orbit (which is no-where near the launchpad). On another note, I've relaunched the craft, and everything seems to be going fine so far. I'll report back here if the bug happens again or not.
-
Today I crashed into the launchpad, and "Tut-Un Jeb-Ahn" at the same time. I don't know if I should be proud or scared.
-
So, I'm launching my newest monstrosity, and it gets into orbit just fine. I set a quick-save, then head back to the tracking-station to time-warp for my transfer. Once that's done, I switch back to my craft and.... BAM. Insta-explode, everything is gone. (A sepratron even crashed into "Tut-un Jeb-Ahn". What the actual f***) Ok, so I figure this is just an odd quirk, so I reload the quick-save. BAM again. Crashed into launchpad. At this point, I restart KSP, hoping the problem would go away, but it doesn't. It still insta-explodes when I load the quick-save. I am at a loss of words to describe how frustrating this is, especially after waiting 20 minutes for my rocket to lag its way into orbit. Oh well, if KSP is going to give me paranormal activity, then I might as well share the evidence. Here is the KSP log file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7rjbtiwlxbe3cm2/KSP.log?dl=0 And here is my quick-save: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ghl08wzq4bfjumq/In%20orbit.sfs?dl=0 I'm running a few visual mods, such as EVE, distant object enhancer, as well as some other mods such as DynamicTextureLoader. The only part mod I'm using is Mechjeb. So, could someone please tell me what the heck is going on here? Is there anything I can do to fix this bug?

Bill's Elcano Challenge Attempt (DONE)
Stratzenblitz75 replied to Stratzenblitz75's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Its finally over. Our circumnavigation of Kerbin has finally come to an end. It took a great deal of patience, but it has finally paid off. Bill now stands where he began, having planted a ring of flags around the planet. Here is the mission report video:
