Part generator Version 2.X release / open beta
ultrasquid replied to Lando's topic in KSP1 Tools and Applications
Is that the same as the 2.2.2 version on Spaceport? I just downloaded that. Will try. -

I've tried it on a Mac and posted the resulting error report some time ago. Have you made changes to the program since then? -

Part generator Version 2.X release / open beta
ultrasquid replied to Lando's topic in KSP1 Tools and Applications
Anyone had any luck running this on a Mac with Mono yet? I just got substantially the same results that I did before, which is to say that it did not work for me. -

I attempted to run on Mac OS X 10.8.3 with Mono Runtime 3.0.10 and got the following error: Unhandled Exception: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of [Win|Mac|Linux (Java)] Cost balancer
ultrasquid replied to MaliciousMuffin's topic in KSP1 Tools and Applications
The cost and mass of tanks could be calculated easily by a formula: mass=(surface area * material mass/unit area = dry mass + volume * fuel mass/unit volume = full mass) OK, my math syntax isn't entirely right, but I think you can figure out what I'm talking about. More expensive materials could have superior strength to weight ratios, thus allowing you to construct lighter, stronger tanks for an additional cost. I don't know if this was along the lines of what you were thinking. It might be more relevant to the tank generator app, but it's a way to think about how engineering decisions affect the cost of a part. -
I hope that an update leads to more than compatibility fixes (though goodness knows that would be fine enough). I've been thinking about some new features that to my naïve non-programmer mind are related enough the current functionality to be easy to implement. *Orbital path tracing. Drawing a thin line over the map following the path of the device along its last 1-10 (selectable) orbits. *Zoom in on a map area *Visual and spectrum-shifted (IR, UV, Radio, or magnetic to false-color) scanning Something I'd like to be able to do one day is hang an ISA module from a weather balloon and track Kerbin's and other planets' wind patterns as it drifts through the atmosphere. With these few tweaks I might be able to collect that data.

This seems to be relevant to this discussion: http://what-if.xkcd.com/30/ In short, this article describes how a small electric airplane would function in the atmospheres of various bodies of our solar system. The worlds of the Kerbol system are not identical to ours, but neither are they to each other. Kerbin has a very dense atmosphere, Duna has a sparse one, and most other bodies have none at all. Propellers, wings, and even jet propulsion would function differently on each of them and a flying craft would have to be designed accordingly.

Part generator Version 2.X release / open beta
ultrasquid replied to Lando's topic in KSP1 Tools and Applications
Has anyone managed to make this work on Mac or Linux yet? -
C7 made a post to his own dev blog this week. That might be enough to tide you over.

I've found these parts extremely useful. If you're just sending a small probe, there's no need to strap a Mainsail engine under it. These are perfect for lofting those small unmanned loads, and ought to be less expensive once economics enter the game, provided updates continue at that time. The current version is at Kerbal Spaceport

It's come up in general terms, but not down to specifics that I recall. I'm sure SQUAD is figuring out something as part of the focus on Career Mode for v 0.20-0.21 and up. I figure it could combine some form of investment (devoting a percentage of the budget to the R&D dept to advance your tech level) and actual tests of new technologies, which might become more reliable with repeated tests. but that's just my speculation

I hope I don't see anymore complaints about "necro-posting" for a while. 8 months really is not a very long time.

L4D car in KSP - with interior models!
ultrasquid replied to TouhouTorpedo's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
This style of car was also typical of US government fleet transport from the late '60s through the mid '80s, perfectly suited to running about on the space center grounds during the late Apollo thru early Shuttle eras. It could use a little repaint. Off-white with a high-waisted red stripe and a blue meatball logo on the side doors would look good. But do what you like. -
Should the helmet be hard plastic or plush? Blow-molding would probably be the cheapest way to make them in mass quantities but the tooling costs are high.
-
But isn't part of the fun of space exploration that 7 year wait between lofting your probe to one of the gas giants only to find the parabolic antenna doesn't open properly when it gets there? Just think of all the Munshots you can do while waiting for that distress bleep from the low-gain secondary transmitter on the probe. My point being that there are many ways to play the game. If you don't have the patience to fly with ion propulsion, then you don't have to use it, but don't begrudge those who might want to. Of course, to do that, we'd need some way to handle off-focus continuing operations-- that is: powered flights running on their own the way we have persistent objects in orbit now.

[0.16] MpM: Miscellaneous parts Manufacturing
ultrasquid replied to lahn's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Maybe one of those newfangled hybrid solid propellant/liquid oxidizer rocket systems. I'm not quite sure how that would work differently in the game, except that the fuel is supposed to be somewhat less explodey in the event of a mishap than liquid fuel, and unlike a pure solid fuel rocket it can be turned off before it fully burns out. -
When iron-bearing lava encounters an intense magnetic field, it may exhibit properties of a ferrofluid and form arcs along the magnetic lines of force. As the lava cools, these arcs would be fixed in position. This could be how the arch formed on the Mun

[v0.17] Damned Aerospace Version 1.5.3 + Crewtank
ultrasquid replied to DYJ's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Yes, that's the kind of problem I've been having. The angle of rotation for the VTOL hinge seems to be unpredictable, or at least predictably wrong, when attaching more than one to a craft using symmetry. It can be corrected by rotating the parts with the Robotics setup interface, but it is difficult to determine which direction the parts will bend without testing in flight mode.
