I didn't see that post, but yes, same idea and I like it. I also liked Stone Blue's comment for a potential use, excellent point - I was just thinking in terms of 'radar', but I agree - that would work better, simpler. I don't expect myself (or anyone for that matter) to expect this to be of any use in timewarp. If anything, I would think it would just turn off/go silent during timewarp. My primary thought regarded docking purposes. Yes, I have, I tried it. I prefer Romfarer's docking camera though, it has alignment indicators incorporated as well. An audible ping is what I was referring to, not the actual radar signals. A big YES! to the idea of a downward looking landing radar!... night-side Mun landings here I come!

I thought it would be interesting (and possibily helpful?) to have an audible active radar ping in KSP, perhaps even with a radar display (though not essential), like in the EVA Pod Bowman flew trying to fetch/save Poole in 2001 A Space Odyssey. Many a time I've done docking maneuvers on the unlit side of a body where my ship's lights have not yet illuminated the target, and all I have to go by is the distance to target readout... and if I wish to play with ship labels off (F4 key) that readout goes away too, except for what's shown in the docking camera (Romfarer's Lazor System addon) provided I have the target actually 'painted' with crosshairs on. Of course I would leave it up to the developer, but I would think perhaps a radar cone of 45 degrees would suffice, with a range of perhaps 50km? A ping sent out would echo, naturally, with a 1/4 to 1/2 second pause before the next ping was emitted after the echo was received? Being radar waves propagate at 10^8 m/s, a bit quick for the purposes I'm imagining here, perhaps a reduced propagation rate could be utilized, like, say, the speed of sound (340.29 m/s, at sea level)? For docking purposes, and just for cool effect, I would think that would work nicely. Again, left up to the developer, it could be linked/tied to the docking camera addon, or as a new part to be incorporated into the Tech Tree ... a nifty little dish or array panel. Feedback/opinions?

I'm also guilty as charged.

gas explosion in space(the vacuum)
LordFerret replied to goldenpeach's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Helium is not a volatile gas, it does not burn or explode even when mixed with oxygen. Do you mean hydrogen? Helium burning (fusing) in a star is another story. -
I took an Amtrak Acela Express (bullet train - hah! - NOT!) from NYC to Washington DC not too long ago. Not impressed. I think our maximum speed was like 90mph. The train was overcrowded and stuffy... and the scenery was less than impressive. I'll stick to short hop commuter jets thank you.

The two best mods ever made for Half-Life (HL1) were DoD (Day of Defeat) and CS (Counter Strike). DoD was, and still is, my favorite game. Anybody play CS Portable??? It's pretty much a port from the original CS. Yes - I play, same name as here. As for Portal, never played it; But I do like the end scenes and music/songs. lol

My first flight ever was actually missed. I wasn't even 1 year old yet, and my parents missed the plane (as my dad said, literally by 60 seconds, because of a snow storm). The flight was the ill-fated Northeast Airlines Flight 823, which crashed shortly after take off from LaGuardia NY on Rikers Island. We were lucky. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_Airlines_Flight_823 My first flight that I actually remember, I was perhaps 4 or 5 years old, was to Miami FL to visit my grandparents. I few all by myself (a stewardess took charge of me). What I remember best was that I had a starboard window seat just forward of the wing/engine nacelle, and the airplane had propellers (likely a DC-6). I remember it was quite noisy, and I sat and watched the propellers spin while clouds passed below - the entire flight lol.

I wont be around for awhile I have some sad news ...
LordFerret replied to Cdr_Zeta's topic in The Lounge
Sorry to hear, my condolences. 70-something is still too young. Best regards to you both. -
Color approach imaging begins on April 9th... maybe we'll begin to see some features in detail then? Keeping my fingers crossed. Nice find Ringkeeper. Edit I went and made a submission, (the) Red Peri. In honor of Stanley Weinbaum, author. More information about The Red Peri is here.

Never seen that one. Something to look forward to. I wonder, how many such 'Easter Egg' scenes are there? Anybody know?

I'm still wondering what the Hadron collided with. -
How to make a weapon out of a standard lighter
LordFerret replied to daniel l.'s topic in The Lounge
I'd be more impressed if you could make a rocket out of a lighter. -
I saw it for the first time on Feb 20th 2015 ... a landmark day. I started KSP with v0.23.5 and had never seen it, not even once. Yes, I took a screenie of it. 1 in 40 huh? Is that game starts?... rockets crashed?... Kerbals lost?... reboots? lol

KSP 1.2 Update: Your Questions Answered!
LordFerret replied to BagelRabbit's topic in KSP1 Discussion
You jerk ... do you have any idea of how low my heart sank when I read the line about pop-up ads? -
Does this mean I can lock my own threads now?

If you think being a site moderator is a pain, try being a site administrator. Ugh.

Yellowstone pressure release concept
LordFerret replied to Dominatus's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The Yellowstone caldera's dome has been rising (gradually, on and off)... an indication of a possible pending eruption, as so stated by USGS... they have been monitoring it for years. There is speculation there is also a 'big one' earthquake due for southern California. If there is a 'big one', it is possible it could release the pressure under Yellowstone... the break-off of the plate (a subduction zone) might very well release the pressure beneath Yellowstone. In a global aspect, having the 'big one' in CA would be less damaging than Yellowstone blowing it's top. -
April 1st was my dog's birthday. My first and best pet. RIP old girl.

Yes, it goes up one elevator, travels across the catwalk, and then down the other elevator. I was always humored by that one truck outside the VAB, raging around, drifting circles around the VAB... and the truck inside the VAB which runs over Kerbals. Someday they should update that, so the Kerbals go flying when hit, then get up and shake themselves off and resume their duties. lol

Forgot to add too much DoD (Day of Defeat)... gf used to tell me I was yelling "nade!" in my sleep. I miss that game.

China launches first satellite in 2015
LordFerret replied to xenomorph555's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I'm actually surprised it's taken them this long, as they've had missile technology for quite a while now. -
I used to have ferrets as pets, 8 of them. I would lay on the floor eye-level with them and watch them play. I used to have dreams I was a ferret, romping around with them. Then there were the dreams of flying ... too many hours spent in Flight-Sim. No space-walks with Jeb yet, but I'm getting there.
