I love when KSP has realistic solutions to common problems.
-
Wow. What subtlety in the poll options. Much accurate. Very choices. KSP is the best game I've played in years and it is not perfect in any sense. Much like most of the games I love. Skyrim? I've got more hours into it than KSP, still crashes regularly on a console. Orbiter? Didn't even support sound. Just Cause 2? The map is way, way too big. GTA 5? No mod support from devs and the cheats that are included are lackluster, plus the complete lack of ongoing support for non-multiplayer folks like me. Yes I can and will criticize these games. Yes, I love these games. How's that for an answer??

Vertical launch of spaceplanes?
moogoob replied to tjsnh's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yup! I used two identical Skipper boosters, one ventral and one dorsal. (see first and last image in this gallery:) In this setup, the centre of drag stays behind the centre of mass the whole trip. The alternative is putting an absurd amount of wings on the bottom of the rocket, and/or an absurd mushroom fairing. EDIT: I wouldn't really call it a spaceplane though - it's a "shuttle." Vertical takeoff, horizontal landing, like NASA's shuttle or Buran. EDIT again: You can download that craft from the link in my sig if you want to play around with it. -
What top 10 (or less) mods couldn't you do without?
moogoob replied to Mulbin's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
Mechjeb. That's it. I LIKE visual mods like EVE and Planetshine but I could live without them if need be. Heck, I can also do without Mechjeb, but I can just do so much more with it installed. -
I've had luck with this approach too. Sad it's so buggy - it would be a wonderfully useful part otherwise.

Anyone used the "Ant engine" before?
moogoob replied to RogueWraith909's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
It's for when you need a very, very small and light engine. Satellites, probes, deorbiting, log-gravity landers and so on. I've been trying to use it more! The only bit I dislike about it is that it's the only inline engine with an attachment point but no built-in fairing. -
Any potential son would hate me for naming them "Kerbas" or "Patbro". I might consider naming a daughter "Sibie" or "Melayne" though. Not too bad.

Zero. What mods use modulemanager?

Help with custom flag
moogoob replied to ZentroCatson's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Use Preview. You can also download and install a good open-source paint program (if you can't afford Photoshop) like The Gimp that can save in a decent format. Does this "Fire Alpaca" program have a "Layer merge" or "flatten" command you can try prior to saving as a PNG? -
a few issues I've encountered
moogoob replied to ForScience6686's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
ALl I can tell you is my experience with #1 - I've only seen this happen when I change a part's placement and/or symmetry AFTER making the action group - it applies itself to one (EG) solar panel (the one I clicked on ro re-place) but not the others. -
SpaceM Nastybird 2 - Stock Mk2 Shuttle
moogoob replied to moogoob's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I did! It's even in the instructions. I just need to do another revision - move the wings back a tad. If you've got 1/3rd fuel left it's not too much a problem but this is making re-entry just a bit difficult. :/ -
SpaceM Nastybird 2 - Stock Mk2 Shuttle
moogoob replied to moogoob's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Did some more re-entry testing today, and have one more thing to add: make sure you're light on fuel before re-entry. Even if you have only 50% remaining AND put it all into the front tank, she gets awfully flippy high up and can break apart when this happens. Drain some into other docked ships or burn it off somehow in other ways. Shephat and Sibie Kerman died for this information. May they rest in peace, brave test pilot and engineer. -
Funny to have all these rover threads pop up as I've just started seriously experimenting with them too. I've noticed that the ruggedized wheels can do this.. bugging out thing. Where you're driving on Kerbin at 20m/s and the whole thing will bounce about like it was in a frying pan for a few seconds. It also loses some speed and acceleration while this is happening. Perhaps an engine limitation?

This thread belongs in a museum.

No idea if Squad has any intentions to change this, but using engines as impromptu heat shields is easily my saviour of early career mode. They're heavy so bring the centre of mass in their direction (IE you fall engine-first), they're heat-resistant because they use, you know, FIRE, and they have high drag facing backwards which is great to reduce the amount of time you spend in the heat zone.

Plotting routes to the outer planets....
moogoob replied to babaton's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I use Mechjeb's porkchop plot. It is extremely handy - gives you timing, Delta-V etc. for all the possible trajectories over the next couple in-game years. Can also plot courses between moons in the same planetary SOI, say, the from the Mun to Minmus, or from Laythe to Vall. It's as automatic or manual as you want - you can use it to determine the ideal window time, then make the manouver node yourself or just let MJ warp to and perform the burn for you whilst you get coffee or make breakfast or something. You still need to do your own mid-course corrections and plan for capture once you arrive, of course. -
Do you like the new Aerodynamic system in the game?
moogoob replied to Dspan_000's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Overall I very much like it. Planes are now enjoyable to fly, and atmospheric ascent is again a challenge. Do agree that heat shields should be made useful again and I also think that airbrakes should shear off if you use them at super/hypersonic velocities - if you want to slow down hard, do a high-altitude turn like the shuttle did. -
What is the rationale behind playing completely stock?
moogoob replied to falloutaddict's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I'm not what you would call a completely stock player, but one class of mods I won't install are parts. This increases shareability of your craft and forces you to think and build within the boundaries of the stock. I like that. However I need my MechJeb, EVE and planetshine. -
It's a good engine but keep in mind that it can't gimbal. The Aerospike is very useful in certain situations - I use it in a rocketplane (put it on a small plane and you can go stupid fast in seconds and it doesn't run out of fuel too quickly) design or two, and as a main engine on my Mk2 shuttle which fires from launch alongside and drawing fuel from the boosters. Alongside the Thud it's one of the best heavy-thrust lander engines, and much much better in atmospheres.
-
Love it. Keep it at 1 for external and turned it up to 2 for IVA views.
-
You can try a Jool aerobrake, certainly. You're being more efficient that I usually am - I usually just go the route of "bring way too much fuel and circularize normally".
-
There's no entry for "Had Orbiter years ago." I finally got KSP around 0.23 some time. Just after the NASA pack with the nice big engines, KLAW and asteroids.

Like IRL, like KSP (zero-G unstable spin test by Teflon_Mike)
moogoob replied to HafCoJoe's topic in KSP1 Discussion
That's impressive.
