Mun, Minmus and Return Challenge
purpleivan replied to gamerdood1987's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
One question, how perfect does the 100km orbit have to be, within 1km, 100m, 1m? -
I'm up for launching another module if there's an available window. I'm in Norway so I could slot in at a time that's a bit too early or late for other people, depending on their terrestrial location. I'm good for launching something in the next three or four hours if that's suitable.

So, I redesigned my ship a bit, changed some engines and fuel loads and got my time down to 44 seconds. Good, but not good enough. As loathed as I was to do it, I decided on MOAR BOOSTERS (well two additional engines and tanks for the 1st stage) and so now we have. Gone in 41 Seconds More impressive though is that the pic I grabbed when I finally made it into space was at the exact moment my fuel ran out, as in 0.00 in the tanks, but before the game's particles from the engine significantly faded (no idea what the lifespan for those are on an aerospike). But with that I think I'm bowing out of this challenge, as I think we could be getting into serious diminishing returns territory. Although I'll probably proved wrong and a couple hours from now someone will post a time of 35 seconds.

Closing in... 44 seconds. I'll have to put a little more fuel in for another attempt as I ran out at a little over 60km. Going to start mashing the F1 key when I get close to 70km as well for that extra 1/2 second too.
-
I was going for a more slippery design, but it looks as if at these velocities it's the real issue. I replaced my fairings with two heat shields (for 2nd and 3rd stages) and was able to go full throttle from launch with the only explosion being the nosecone at about 15km and achieved a time of 46 seconds. Hmmm so... how will I get those extra 5 seconds Going to have another crack at this after dinner.
-
Er... I like to play while I sit. Yep chairs are comfortable. Seriously, I only play sandbox now (completed career when it first came out and didn't bother with it after that), no cheating like F12 unless it's to grab something for a cinematic video. Oh, and bring 'em back alive. No stranding kerbals on some distant moon and forgetting about them.
-
Nice... gotta say that that whenever I see a shuttle type vehicle on the Mun it looks so weird, but in a good way
-
How did you manage to avoid atmospheric heating issues? I had to reduce thrust on the 1st stage so that my 2nd didn't explode.
-
I actually had three fairings, one inside the other, two attached to the 2nd stage, almost the same size as each other, plus another one the on the nosecone of the 3rd, but yup fairings do overheat.

What did I do today. I got into space in 50 seconds for Gone to Space challenge
-
Had a quick crack at this while making dinner (was running back and forth between desk and cooker between attempts). I managed to get op over 70km in 50 seconds. I decided to keep it simple and just use three engines, the kind that you'd use for a typical launcher construction, but with ridiculously small amounts of fuel for each stage. I could probably have gone faster as I was only at 2/3 throttle on the first stage (too m heat later if I went above that) and the 3rd stage ran out of fuel at about 52km and coasted the rest of the way up. Heat and to a less degree stability were the big issues for me. Might have another crack later at something faster.

That little thing reminded me of the two ion scooters that I used in my Jool 5 challenge entry (v0.95). Those tiny things zipped around the Jool system, transferring kerbals around and did the landings on Bop and Pol. Heading from Laythe to the mother ship, further out in the Jool system. Landing on Pol Here's one of them attached to the Tylo lander.

I completed a successful attempt at the Moon Hopping challenge, by landing vehicle on the Mun, then on Minmus, landing on Mun a 2nd time, then returning to Kerbin. I also took a couple of rovers for the first Mun landing, because... why not.

I was trying out the Vive today and one of the things that occurred to me was how good it would be to play KSP in that. The extensive GUI and keyboard controls of the game would be a bit of an issue, but certainly it could be a really fun experience.

A pic from my 2nd attempt at the Moon Hopping challenge (this time a successful one). Jeb and Bill get ready to race.
-
It took all evening but I finally have a successful entry to the challenge. The journey of the Moon Hopper 2. In addition to correcting my mistakes with the tanks of my first build, I added another pair of Mk1 liquid fuel tanks just to be sure.
-
It's not quite so bad now, but in the first 9 months I racked up 1300 hours. It was like I was working two jobs... but in I got to throw little green characters around a solar system
-
Now that there's been a couple of successful runs at this, I'll have to make the necessary changes to my ship and have another crack at this.
-
I had a crack at this yesterday with an Mk2 Lander Can based vehicle, but made a mess of it as the tanks that were directly attached to a couple of nuke engines were FLT-400's instead of Mk1 Liquid Fuel. So instead of having 800 units of liquid fuel after losing all my drop tanks, I had only 360 units of it plus I'd been hauling around 440 units of useless oxidizer. Made it as far as the 2nd landing on Mun, but didn't have enough for the ascent and return to Kerbin. Hopefully I'll fix the design and have another crack in the next few days. Here it is after making its 2nd landing (Minmus) I did think about dragging around a fuel module that I'd leave in orbit (especially for the Mun landings) each time I went down to the surface, which would have made the challenge a lot easier, but figured that hard level was do-able without it. Oxidizer... Grrrrr.
-
I remember not long after starting to play the game that I had a little ion driven de-orbiter that I used to remove debris from orbit. Then I found the delete button in the tracking station. That was the last time that little ship was used.

Pic from a failed attempt (stupidly left a bunch of oxidizer on a ship using nukes) at the Moon hopping challenge.
-
Regarding this part of the rules, I assume it's ok to have drop-able fuel tanks?
-
Ok, I've not heard any cries of "no... don't do it" so here is the link to my gamesave of the station with my module (science lab, lighting and a docking port). KSS savegame Here's a pic of the station as it stands now.

Mun, Minmus and Return Challenge
purpleivan replied to gamerdood1987's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I did something similar, but a little more crazy in the challenge Space Station of Coolness yesterday which involved a trip from Kerbin to Duna orbit then Minmus orbit, Mun orbit again, Kerbin orbit, Minmus orbit again and finally Kerbin orbit, to rendezvous with a ship that was in low orbit for a completely different challenge. Then finally re-entry to Kerbin (had quite a bit of fuel spare too). This did involve a handful of quickloads, but only for the sake of convenience (messing up short burns which while distracted by taking screenshots) rather than anything terminal, so I don't think that this challenge sounds too difficult. This does have a couple of landings, but given that they're on Mun and Minmus they wouldn't be a biggie . How about adding landings at all anomaly sites on Mun with a single vehicle, that would be more tricky and throw in some specific locations to aim for. I saw your challenge nikyname and have it in my challenges bookmarks folder and hope to get around to taking a crack at it before 1.1 hits.
