I've gotten a standard canard up to 260km before. Didn't quite reach orbital velocity, only made it to like 2100m/s. Drag model is horrible, but there's a mod for it.

Suggestion: mount some radial jet engines on the interior side of your tails, and save the rocket engine with its high fuel consumption for a later stage after you're already at 15km or so. Looks pretty nice, I like it.
