Heatshields are broken for me
Slam_Jones replied to Clockwork13's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Personally, I've avoided a lot of the stress of dealing with it by setting re-entry heat to 0%. It's not really a game mechanic I enjoy. -
322 parts seems a bit steep... looks great though!
-
Crashed too many times to admit... no successful landings

Smarter than a monkey (about science) test.
Slam_Jones replied to PB666's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The astrology one is actually the only one I missed, as it was the last question, and I only read the first couple words... Guess if it comes to patience, the monkeys probably got me beat -
@Red Shirt: This, minus quotes: ["Imgur"]RO76Y["/Imgur"]

Well, in a lot of fields, blatant plagiarism can ruin your career. I'm guessing that's not a coincidence. Should Youtubers be an exception?

Have your mind ever gone empty when building a Ship?
Slam_Jones replied to Pedro_daher's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Yeah, happens to me with some frequency. Usually I'll start building something, then realize "wait... this is very similar to this other thing I built" and get stuck trying to make it more unique. Or sometimes I'll go into the VAB and totally forget what I was going to make. -
Something about RSS (Don't read, RSS/RO devs!)
Slam_Jones replied to Sharkman Briton's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
Hmm, this sounds interesting. I might have to download RSS again... -
We went far... but never returned. (Basically every mission beyond Kerbin SOI)

Secret to fighter design
Slam_Jones replied to War Eagle 1's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
It has a lot to do with CoM/CoL alignment. You want them basically on top of each other to have it maneuverable, yet stable. You'll have to tweak it to find the right balance for your design, but it's a big factor. -
Looks like he used the Winch, which there are two variants of. But you can extend and connect the winch to a connector port, or use a harpoon to kinda spear the other object (usually used for asteroids). Upon second inspection, it looks like he had the winch pre-attached to a jr. docking port, and used the magnets of said docking port (and the port on the counterweight) to attach, and then let the winch out. At 4:38 he starts moving in to deploy it.

Play a tune with my instrument
Slam_Jones replied to Azimech's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well, if each wheel can be tuned individually, it can be done. Maybe not easily, but it should be possible. -
New stock parts - thoughts?
Slam_Jones replied to Foxster's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The Stock-alike Station Parts (I think that's what it's called) has a bunch of very nice and, yes, stock-like station parts, including more 2.5m kerbal modules, and at least one 3.75m module. Adds a fair bit of variety to stations. -
Play a tune with my instrument
Slam_Jones replied to Azimech's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Nice, not too bad. Maybe there's some sort of script mod or a way to set up action groups so they disable after the right delay? -

Ohh, interesting. I'll have to try this when I get my new hdd How many parts is it, btw? -
^^ Right. I believe you can press "F" to temporarily invert the SAS setting. Meaning, if you have SAS on, then holding down "F" will disable it, until "F" is released. Or tap "T" twice I guess, if you're averse to holding down buttons. But I agree, a stability mode designed specifically for rovers would be awesome. Planes can get their "hold horizon" (hopefully) and rovers can get "hold terrain" or something like that. In a perfect world, that is...
-
In 0.90, with my rover, yes, if it were on two wheels as described, SAS would keep it there. If I were moving forward, and rolling on two wheels (let's say both right wheels) it will in fact be more unstable, but SAS, with enough reaction wheels and torque behind it, can keep it balanced (until it hits something and starts flipping through the air). So generally, depending on your amount of reaction wheel torque, you may have to manually adjust to the angle of the new section of terrain. A well-built rover will usually be able to somewhat correct for this itself (CoM, wheelbase, camber, etc.) but not in every situation. So! With the question being: "will SAS try to fight the pitch caused by the terrain incline?", the answer would be yes, at first, but it is generally very easy to correct for. Often, though, the rover may "settle" onto the slope. (Assuming it's built with that in mind)

Hello, trying to figure out what I can contribute here (spent many many hours with rovers, including a rover circumnavigation of Kerbin, link in sig), but I'm a little confused. I'm seeing a lot of back-and-forth about "SAS does this," "No, SAS does that," "No, you're wrong," etc, but not a lot of actual discussion. Would you mind stating your question again, just so I can be sure I'm responding to the right thing? It's mainly a question of how the SAS and reaction wheels respond to differently sloped terrain, right?

A Truely novice question about Heat.
Slam_Jones replied to GarrisonChisholm's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
It's kinda hard to explain, but heat needs to be transferred to other matter. Generally, there's not a lot of matter in space to absorb the heat, so you need special systems to move the heat around. -
Unless I'm very much mistaken (which is entirely possible), in order to dock, they have to match each other's orbits. Either they will both be in sub-orbit, or both in orbit. Either way, when they connect, it will be one or the other. Unless you're trying to dock at very high (relative) speed? I don't see that ending well, though...

Re-Orbiting Asteriods to make a bigger Moon.
Slam_Jones replied to Nomial_Control's topic in Science & Spaceflight
While that would be cool and prohibitively expensive and everything, do we really need to mess with the tides? -
Assuming you have an Nvidia GPU, Nvidia Shadowplay is supposed to be one of the better options.
