strange control drift.
Slam_Jones replied to Netskimmer's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
I've had phantom input from my joystick too many times to count. May have scrapped a few designs before realizing that was the problem... If you think it might be caused by the joystick, unplug it once the game has loaded in and everything. Just make sure it's plugged in when you start the game, otherwise it gets confused and resets your key bindings. So: - Make sure joystick is plugged in - Start KSP, get to main menu - Unplug joystick - Play KSP If that doesn't do it, then something else may be at play. But at least this way you'll be able to see if the joystick is the problem pretty easily. -
Optimal Vacuum Surface Jump?

This was posted on my thread, and while it's a little math-heavy, I think it should help: -
Optimal Vacuum Ascent?
Slam_Jones replied to Slam_Jones's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
It's partially just for general theory knowledge, but the practical application is that I have a Munar Mining/ISRU operation, and a single-stage lander that lands next to the mining base, connects via KAS to collect fuel, then heads up to the orbital station to deposit the payload. This ship would be performing multiple runs throughout it's lifetime. Typically I try to keep my Munar TWR above 3.0, so that I have enough power for "emergency maneuvers." -
Conveniently, I have both Firefox and Chrome installed on this computer. Firefox seems to work fine: no issues with opening and closing spoilers. Chrome is glitching as described above. Not sure what more I can contribute, but I did notice that some of the links would disappear as well. It seems like all but the basic text can be affected.

Ah, I knew they spell color as "colour" and such, but I guess I figured scientific terms were universal. Shows what I know -
Optimal Vacuum Ascent?

Awesome, simple enough. +rep and thanks! -
Hi, I've been playing KSP for a while, and I feel like I should know this, but I don't. My question is: what is the optimal ascent profile for non-atmospheric bodies? I usually go vertical to about 100m, then pitch off to somewhere between 15 - 30 degrees, but I assume there's a better way to do it. I assume a gravity-turn sorta thing would help, but I'm not quite smart enough to figure out how or why. Any suggestions?
-
A few questions to help us figure it out for you: - What kind of fps are you getting currently? - What kind of fps are you hoping to have? - What are the other graphical settings? (Atmospheric effects, texture quality, etc. etc.)

- Getting close enough with my Mun landings that I almost knocked over the drilling/ISRU tower with the giant fuel tank. (Nearly happened this morning) - Docking two stations together, while neither has RCS or monoprop. (Lots of turning, quick burst of momentum, turn again very quickly, quick burst another direction, quick turn, etc. etc. etc. all while trying not to break any solar panels...) - Also, landing safely at KSC in 90% of atmo re-entries. And yes, sans MechJeb.

Flipping out on Gravity turns
Slam_Jones replied to Bishop149's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Personally, I'd start my gravity turn much earlier. I usually start it around 1,000m and continue til reaching 45 degrees at 10km, then 30 degrees at 30km, flat at 45km, 5 degrees below horizon at 60km. Keeping my TWR between 1.3 and 1.4 til at least 30km, then upping to 1.5 - 1.6 or so. -

That's an entirely different word. According to this article, the British came up with the word first. Apparently, in the 19th century, there was Association Football and Rugby Football, both of which were difficult to say, so they shortened the names to "Soccer" and "Rugger" respectively. Oddly enough, the more the Americans used the word, the less the British did, up to the point where Brits don't even want anything to do with the word. Oh, and what us Americans call Football is referred to as Gridiron in the UK (or was, back in the day). Also this article states the same thing. And not to mention this article that seems to agree with the others. Gotta love the Brits always trying to blame us for their silly words Edit: (Unrelated) Post #1,000! Woo! -
26 here. Not surprised at the high number of 10-19s though.

Well, they also claim that aluminum is pronounced "aluminium," despite also claiming to pronounce things exactly how they are spelled But hey, different cultures and whatnot. According to the internet (which, being the internet, could well be wrong), both versions are correct. It just depends where you first heard it, I suppose. -
Working on a little Mini-Shuttle. Launched vertically as a Two-Stage-To-Orbit, it drops the main stage at about 50km and proceeds to circularize and rendezvous with stations in LKO. The intent of this shuttle was to see just how small I could make the wing area while still being able to land it safely from a glide. Currently, I've done two successful re-entries. It doesn't look like it should glide... but somehow it does. I actually don't even need to use the chutes to land with usually, but I like to keep them in case of emergency. Also, here's two of them docked at a local LKO station:

SPACE STATIONS! Post your pictures here
Slam_Jones replied to tsunam1's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Forgot what I called this station, but here it is doing an aero-capture on Laythe (re-entry heat set to 0%) [Also, Near Future mods and others in use here] Some of the crew while it was in LKO And Bill performing some integrity checks to make sure all is well. And here's a completely unrelated station with an extra arm (containing ISRU modules), and two shuttles for crew transport -
Nice! Looks crazy efficient

If you have any interest in old-school rougelike gaming (or D&D, or old RPG's), Tales of Maj'Eyal (<$10) is actually very fun, and very playable on older computers. Tons of classes, races, items, etc. It's the only "old-school" style game that I've put 150+ hours into I've got a few more suggestions along this genre if you're interested. Also, it's probably been mentioned, but at the other end of the spectrum is Warframe (free). While you can pay money for their premium currency, you can still find and use (with the exception of time-sensitive exclusives) literally every weapon and suit in the game. It's one of my highest played (free) games, with something like 300+ hours on it. It's also one of the few that I actually spent a couple extra $ on for currency. Also in the FTP-FPS realm is PlanetSide 2 (free), though honestly I haven't played it recently, and it can get old quick. Still, the massive battlefields are cool. Some other randoms that I've spent more than a few hours on: Chivalry: Medieval Warfare (currently $5 on steam), which is a first person slasher for either single-player or multiplayer. Attacking nd blocking requires good timing, so it's got some challenge and reward there. Newb servers are usually populated, but once past that level, there's a lot less (occupied) servers. Single player vs bots is still plenty fun. If you like zombie games, Left 4 Dead 2 (currently $20, but I've snagged it on sale for about $2 - $3, bundled with the original). Pick up guns, shoot zombies, make it to the next safehouse. Teammates usually help. That's all I can think of for the moment

Sleep Paralysis, Fear, and Rationality
Slam_Jones replied to DuoDex's topic in Science & Spaceflight
As someone who feels the (admittedly, very odd) compulsion to scare myself silly every few months, I like to look up creepypasta and the like. If anyone has any links to the pics OP was talking about, feel free to PM them to me. I don't sleep much anyway As for why I like to scare myself sometimes, I really don't know. I believe it has to do with survival instincts: if you're scared, you're more alert to dangers, and more likely to survive. Sure it doesn't make nearly as much sense in today's world (you're not as likely to be eaten by a wolf in your own home, for example) but I guess I need to satisfy that weird urge once in a while. The only person I've met who has had night terrors is my oldest brother. He only described one time (he woke up, couldn't move, couldn't make any noise, but felt like there was a presence in his otherwise empty room). Never had one personally, and I used to be terrified of the dark. -
That's a tactic I used for my amphibious cirumnavigation rover. I used an extending cylinder from Infernal Robotics, and placed a few structural plates on the end. Extending the cylinder put the plates underwater, which lowered the center of gravity, and raised the rest of the rover out of the water. If done correctly, none of the parts would be checking for water collision (as the extended part of the cylinder has no "hit-box"... or at least not when I did it.)

Give New Players Simpler Parts
Slam_Jones replied to tuckjohn's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Or career mode. Personally, when I first got KSP I went immediately into Sandbox mode and encountered the problem you described. I had no idea what anything did, or even what part to start with. I stared at the structural panels and girders for a while before deciding to take a different approach: career mode. After playing career for a little bit, it all makes a lot more sense. Or, as stated above, Science mode (though personally I've never played Science mode) -
I made a few go-karts back in 0.90, using liberal amount of Tweakscale. I tried to keep them (for the most part) around or less than 1x1x1 in size, and some would even weigh less than the Kerbal. The jet-powered ones could even reach 60m/s before the wheels popped. Turning at the speed wasn't easy... but I think my best design could corner (full turn) at 45m/s without flipping.
-
I've personally used Tweakscale in a lot of situations to make the ISRU 1.25m. Sure, it'll run a bit slower (Tweakscale doesn't always get the exact right amount of input/output ratio after tweaking, but it's close enough for me) but it's a good, quick option IMO. This battle truck, for example, has a very tweakscaled (down to 0.3m or so) ISRU, drill, and ore tank, allowing it to stop and refuel (very slowly). I even modded to cfg files so that it can make more ammo as well (guns are from BDArmory mod). Theoretically, it can keep going and shoot down enemies forever.

No problem! I think the dev is pretty active, so new stuff is bound to show up once in a while. Good luck on your journeys! -
Buildings arround kerbin?
Slam_Jones replied to EdusacconBR's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Partway down the OP in the Kerbinside thread, under the "Kerbin Side Jobs" banner: "Adds several contracts for transporting kerbals to, from and between the bases in KerbinSide, usually with a visit to or close to spaaaace!. Also adds the first four missions of a campaign revolving around ancient places on Kerbin, with espionage and intrigue in spaaaace! Intercept an unregistered satellite. Escort an informant to KSC. And more!" -

Kerbinside Mod. IIRC you can also download a pack for the Contract Configurator that adds KerbinSide-related jobs
