After a long (LONG) sojourn through the wonderful world of GTA, I've started returning to KSP. Finally built my first two post-1.0 SSTO spaceplanes. The first is a Mk2, using 4 Turbojets and 2 "Swivels" to carry 2 crew and up to 8 tourists to LKO. I call it the "Luxor" The second is a Mk3 (and the first successful Mk3 SSTO I've ever made), using something like 16 Turbojets, 1 "Skipper," and 4 "Swivels" to carry 4 crew and up to 32 tourists to LKO. I call it "El Gigante" For a while, the Mk3 had two SRBs strapped to the side for a little extra boost between LF and LFO phases, but it ended up working better without them. And cheaper, too. No pics yet, but maybe soon.

Top Gear inspired a love of racing in me, especially for off-road or rally racing. Never had the chance to race in real life, but I'm planning to one day. For a while I would play on keyboard, then when that wasn't good enough, I plugged in a joystick and drove with that. Once that got old, I saved up for a few months and bought a racing wheel, and love it. Latest game I've been racing in is GTA 5, weird as that may seem. It's actually a lot of fun - having a giant HD world to free roam and make races in is pretty nice.

Had another one today outside my office, which I believe is a weather balloon. It looked like it was pretty high up, much higher than airliners usually go. It seemed to be shiny, and alternated reflecting green-blue and yellow-orange. Weirdest part is that it seemed to be slowly moving the opposite direction of the wind... but at high altitudes like that, it's hard to tell which way the wind really is going anyway. It could be completely opposite the direction it's going on the ground. But yeah. A UFO isn't necessarily alien in origin.

What happened to Valentina Kerman?!
Slam_Jones replied to CaptainApollo's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
She tried to crawl out from under the capsule and got squished... the doctors should have her back up and running in a few weeks (assuming you have the "Missing Crews Respawn" option checked). -
It'd be nice if those were more visible. Maybe have one of the dots actually be an arrow, revolving and pointing the direction you need to go. Y'know, make it a little more obvious.

Oh man, I remember playing an old version of that hover game on, I think, Windows 95. I was so blown away by the 3D graphics Morrowind (spent so many hours on this one) Diablo 2 Rollercoaster Tycoon Armored Core Freelancer Edit: I keep remembering more!

I'm sure once there have been at least a few successful "space tourists," more rich folks will start to trust the system and be more willing to invest in it. Just my thoughts.

Might not be it, since the "realistic" theme, but maybe Vigilante 8 or something from the series? I'm not sure they made em for PC though. Other idea: maybe something from the FlatOut series? Best suggestion I can end on is the Wikipedia list of vehicular combat games. Scrolling through might refresh your memory.

Any chance you're thinking of something from the Twisted Metal series? They focus mostly on vehicle combat and deathmatches.

Animals in Kerbal Space Progam
Slam_Jones replied to Donterrio's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I could be wrong, but I recall reading that the "mystery goo" container used to contain a small critter, which would be exposed to the vacuum of space and observed (for science!) I guess a lot of people found this 'cruel' and 'offensive,' so it was changed to it's current form. -
Do you like the new Aerodynamic system in the game?
Slam_Jones replied to Dspan_000's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I can totally understand the confusion. From outside looking in, it may seem I'm griping about nothing. I guess what I object to is just sudden, irreversible changes. I spent a lot of time putting together designs that work in the old system, and I'm probably the weird one here, but it's a bit disappointing when something you truly enjoyed is suddenly very much different... especially when there's no feasible way to change it back (yet). Then again, I'm probably the weird one. When Rust changed systems, I still preferred their old version, despite it being "inferior" or "old" or "no longer updated" or whatever. I guess it's just a personal thing: I find something I like, but it gets changed. Yes, one should always build in the path of progress, but sometimes I like standing on my figurative, unchanged dirt road. I know and love every bump of that road, so when someone comes in and paves it over, I'm gonna be a little upset. Sure, it's technically the same road, but now the biggest elements I loved about it are gone. If there were, say, an option to switch from the new tarmac to the old dirt, that'd be a lot nicer. The folks wanting a smooth ride can get their smooth ride, and those wanting to kick up some dirt can kick up some dirt. But maybe I'm crazy Edit: As for old aero being soupier, well, my gripe is more about the drag applying to literally every piece of the rover, effectively putting it in much thicker soup. A "plane-without-wings" rover will go faster in the new system, sure, but not a "dune buggy"-style rover. -

Well, yes and no. It's more like "I'm used to driving trucks, but my truck got replaced with a smart car. So instead, I scrapped that and bought a van, which I've driven before. It's more familiar and logical to my particular senses." Or, "my car is suddenly slowed to a crawl by the air, so let's replace that air with better air." Or, "I dislike this new system so very much, that I'll take an established and respected alternative." Or, "This system does not respond how I expect it to, so let's use a system that does." Or, "I'm experiencing issues that were never issues before, so let's use a system that doesn't give me those issues." Or, "I enjoyed the game before, but the new system has made it less fun for me. So, I'll use a system that brings that fun back." I could go on, so take your pick, or wait for more -
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Arthur C. Clarke I'm sure people 200 years ago would balk and laugh at the idea of going to the moon, because the technology of the time wasn't even close to allowing it. but technology progresses just the same. If you told someone even 50 years ago about your smartphone, do you think they'd believe you? They've never seen one before, and they don't understand how it works. To them, it's magic. Just the same way any civilization sufficiently advanced enough to be able to visit us would have technology we can't even dream of. Just because it doesn't exist or hasn't been proven yet, doesn't mean it's impossible. Stating something is impossible is the quickest way to stop progress. If we want to advance as a civilization, we can't keep saying "this is impossible because ________!" All that does is slow us down. I'm not saying that all UFO sightings are of extra-terrestrial craft - I'm sure the majority are experimental aircraft. However, dismissing the idea of ET-UFOs entirely is a pretty bold claim. Are you so arrogant that you think our world is the only one capable of harboring life?

Maybe I'm influenced by the opinions of others, but Win8 should really only be on touchscreens. That's what it was designed for, right? Big, brightly colored blocks are easy to poke. When you have a mouse, well, they're just annoying. Again, this is just my opinion. Maybe I'm crazy. (or just stubborn)

KSP Re-Score? Coding new music into the game?
Slam_Jones replied to -ctn-'s topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
I'm sure this is possible with the given system. IIRC (at least in previous versions) once you hit about 60km or so, the "space" music would start playing in the background. This leads me to believe there have to be programmable 'triggers' that you can set to go off when specific circumstances are met. As for how to do that, well, someone will know! I might be able to dig into the code a little bit after work, but no promises. It's been a while since I've done serious programming -
Heh, I always think of Borderlands when I read 'Hyperion'

Hmmm, personally I think it'd be more interesting if the rule were "wings are allowed, parachutes are not" It's harder to glide a plane to a safe landing than to pull the chutes and drift slowly down.

Do you like the new Aerodynamic system in the game?
Slam_Jones replied to Dspan_000's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I can't honestly say there was really any logic behind it, not at first. It's more that I was comfortable with it, I knew it inside and out, and I could build things that did exactly what I expected the first time. Maybe I'm a bit of an old man, but I wasn't a fan of the idea of re-learning the aero, with all it's new weird rules. What prompted me to switch to FAR did involve a bit of logic, due to the fact that the current aero doesn't account for occlusion zones, and (in my eyes, at least) behaves kinda unpredictably... I even wrote a thread about it. -
Well, looking at the stats, it looks you should be able to run it pretty decently. The CPU on it is equivalent(ish) to one I've been using for a few years, so you're good there. Edit: The i5 you're looking at actually has a better single-core score, so you'll probably run it a little smoother than I do. Plenty of RAM, no problem there. KSP, in it's current form, only really needs 4 gigs. Not sure how GPU intensive KSP really is, but the GPU there should definitely be able to handle at least the basics, if not EVE/Astronomer's Pack. Persnoally, I'd stay away from Win8 if you have a choice, but that's just my opinion. Good luck!

Here's my story (it was several years ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy): I was aboard a boat off the coast of California, between San Deigo and LA. We were heading north from a race in Mexico, and since the race was over and we were just delivering the boat back home, there were only three of us aboard. I had a shift one night from about Midnight to about 4am or so, and I was the only one on deck at the time. Most of the shift had gone normally... not much to see at night out there. Some occasional splashing and such from fish and waves, but nothing unusual. At some point, I found myself looking up at the sky off the coast, and noticed some red lights cruising northward, same direction as us. At first, it seemed normal... Camp Pendelton (a Marine/Navy base) is nearby, and I've seen helicopters, planes, ships, etc all the time out there. I figured it was one of those. Every once in a while, I'd notice that it would stop and appear to hover over a spot of water, then shine what looked like a really bright reddish light into the water for a few moments, and then it would turn it off and continue on it's path. I figured it was a helicopter performing some search and rescue drills. That is, until it stopped again and turned the light on. It sat there for a few moments, and without turning off the light, appeared to zoom off, southward, very very quickly. Like, the speed a jet would take off. From an apparent standstill. I told my Dad about it (he's sailed in this area since he was a kid many many years ago) and he seemed to think it was likely an experimental aircraft from Pendelton. I don't know what I saw, but whatever it was, it sure wasn't concerned about us. As much as I like to believe aliens have already visited us and are helping somewhat to progress our technology, I think that any race that advanced would know how to avoid being seen. I'm a firm believer that most UFOs are experimental aircraft, but I have no doubt that non-terrestrial craft have been spotted before. Edit: Another note to make it a little weirder - I don't remember hearing any whoomph whoomph of helicopter blades or anything, though that sound should travel pretty far over (mostly flat) water. Maybe it was some sort of new Harrier-style VTOL jump-jet plane? Who knows.
