  1. So made a stable craft that should have self corrected but thanks to the aero of KSP it didnt Top speed of about 32 m/s and then of course as I was coming in a stupid hill came out of nowhere and with no controls a crash landing was the best I would do. It uses the big tail combined with thrust limiting the left and right engine to control roll and speed to control pitch 32+ pull up 32- dive down. With a dual throttle (like in a real airplane) I could probably land it first try but I don't know if I will ever be able to land using the thrust limiting menus. After spending almost 15 minutes just flying there I am exhausted as this plane creates a lot of pilot fatigue trying to keep it balanced.
  2. Technically you didn't fly to the runway as parachuting is falling not flying
  3. I generally take my estimates and add 100% for unexpected and have been pretty accurate. If I am working with/for someone who is a pain in the ass then 400% is more accurate.
  4. If you need more for a survey strap an LFO engine on and use that to kick it up higher.
  5. 10km (33,000 ft) is about the limit for junos wheesles and goliaths. Nice plane
  6. Ya I think tweak scaling vernors is your best bet. But really you want VTOL engines throatable.
  7. My last time at Duna was an interplanetary air brake at 15 km. Got very hot but nothing blew didn't need any heat shields
  8. Wow that sounds exactly like I design my rockets lol
  9. I guess I have not built large enough ships I generally only need middle front and back
  10. Eeloo moves very little it could almost be static but you can also account for its orbit in your code
  11. Why limit it to probe cores? I would say anything with a right click menu
  12. Purple, purple is a fruit...
  13. I read about someone in 1.0.4 that found Class-E asteroid with an ore concentration so high it had a better fuel/mass ratio the LFO tanks. Also I am pretty sure you have quoted general order 35 before but maybe it was general order 25. I am going to have to re-read Duna and Eve
  14. Limiting thrust under terminal velocity gets you more dv to space Low TWR rockets with a lot of fuel get payload to orbit cheaper Ion vs tweak scaled nuke (both have 2kn thrust) Unfortunately I am not sure any of these make for good TV
  15. Yes a lot like an asteroid intercept through the kerbin system. Although question is 3400 highly elliptical capture or 100x100 capture? If it is highly elliptical capture that means even after burning off 2400 he will still be going roughly 4300 m/s which is still pretty darn explody. Would a Gravity brake off eve with a correction burn to Kerbin be a possibility or are you simply going too fast for eve to do anything useful?
  16. Depends on the altitude for Minimus I actually put a small satellite in orbit coplanar orbit to Minimus at 100km just for the purpose of lining up that launch. Just for fun I rendezvoused with a polar station and hit inclination within .1 before 1300 m/s. I am normally at least 1 to 2 degrees off eyeballing it.
  17. First off learn to dock. It is like riding a bike. Your going to fall and scrape your knee. It is going to take a while and a lot of practice and there will be a lot of failures. Be sure to F5 F9 as necessary. Once it clicks it will come like second nature. Then learn to dock without RCS this is like riding a unicycle. This again will be hard but it will click eventually and then you can tell all your friends hey look at me NO HANDS Ring stations can be closed with struts (external or clipped inside) or via docking ports that are very close but not connected. I like to launch them with all the struts starting on items that get discarded when the station is in final resting position. The ocar b tanks are connected to jr docking ports and get shot into space to remove the struts and make it look better.
  18. Please tell me I am not the only one who didn't notice this. When launching to a ship or minimus in an inclined orbit I had to guess when the correct launch time was by eyeballing it. I was even considering writing a mod to give you a countdown. dunn dunn duunnnnuuunnn Kerbal alarm already does this just set a timer for AN/DN while on the launch pad. epic fail.
  19. Ok I just want to set some things straight. 1. Reducing thrust to prevent going faster then terminal velocity. This is just wrong. Yes this can happen if your atmospheric TWR is greater then some ridiculously high value at launch. Some one did some research on it but I cant find the post. The fix is not throttling down but adding more fuel or using a smaller engine to get TWR down. Check MJ I believe it will tell you how much dv you have used fighting gravity, friction, and cosine losses. low TWR = Gravity losses, High speed = friction, bad gravity turn and REALLY bad TWR cause cosine losses. Gravity losses are the dominant cause of loss. The most efficient launches are basically fireballs until engines cut out and they coast to AP. 2. Second stage TWR of 2 or 2.5. This is very wrong if you are doing a gravity turn. If you are going straight up until 70km and then circularizing it would make sense. In reality this is very complicated but you can launch a craft with a .6 second stage TWR what is really important is what speed are you going when staged, what altitude, how much dv and time to burn. Almost all of my 20t+ rockets follow the same pattern. I put in a .6-.8 twr high altitude engine. I put in a low altitude stage and add fuel until the atmospheric TWR is .8. Then I add SRBs until atmospheric TWR is 1.5. Yes I know it is not optimal but it is easy, cheap, quick and it still does very well. In fact they generally out perform highly tuned lifters. For example if I have a 10t lifter that can lift the payload for 900 kredits/t and I use it to lift a 7.3t payload my funds per ton go up to 12,300 funds per ton. If I use my slap together method it will generally come out to 10,000-11,000 funds/t 3. Pushing MJ and KER asap. And this is all personal so to each his own. Learn the math do 2-3 launches maybe 1 mission on paper and then get the mods and never look back. dv=ISP*g*log(m0/m1) (I hope I got that right it would be really embarrassing if I flipped m0 and m1) g = 9.81 m/s^2 m0=starting mass m1=final mass 4. dv to kerbin orbit is not 3400-3600, 2450 is possible (but not practical and requires a ton of TWR and no payload) Ignoring friction and with infinite TWR 2289 I believe is the theoretical minimum. An interesting note that of the 2289 something like 2024 is just getting to orbital speed and 124 is the transfer from 0m to 70x70km. (don't quote me that is the best I remember) 5. Skipper is a Great engine and fills a HUGE gap between the reliant/swivel and mainsail. 5 mainsails would be overkill on TWR and a loss of dv 6. I think @GoSlash27 is wrong about SRBs there not cheap their VERY CHEAP generally SRBs will make up 1/3-1/2 the mass of my ships on the pad but only provide 1/5-1/3 the dv. 7. Burning main engines and boosters vs boosters then mains. Depends on a ship by ship basis. Yes burning booster first will make more dv because they have a bad ISP so the LFO engine is wasting energy accelerating it, BUT BUT BUT at liftoff you experience most of the gravity losses and higher TWR will generally make up for the loss of dv. I would argue a middle ground of mains full throttle until 250 m/s then 1/4 throttle until SRBs burn out.
  20. oh man when did contracts start costing rep to decline?
  21. Although technically you want to do that from the ground without going into a parking orbit to save a little more dv but your more likely to waste dv if you don't set a maneuver node.
  22. @Jetski Ha ha I will have an ok one but I plan on continuing the career while I play them as well. Unfortunately I am playing with TAC life support so if you don't have that installed I am not sure what will happen to craft with LS parts. Sadly I am waiting for Jeb and Bill to get back from Duna. They will finish off the science tree which will obsolete a lot of equipment. Right now it is looking like 3 Kerbal stations, 2 Mun stations, 1 Minimus, ike and gilly station, 1 refinery on Minimus, ike and gilly 5-8 contract satellites 20-40 boosters in orbit. Sadly I don't see Jeb ever getting his hands on a Rapier or RCS thruster blocks as I never really use them. At least the has to be 500 reaction wheels out there lol Once I get them back and replace outdated hardware I will share my file.
  23. Sadly I had a 3.2 ghz that I junked 4 years ago for my 2.67 i7
