Have you looked in the challenges forum? Payload fraction, cheap and cheer full, munar marooned could all use spreadsheeting and numerical optimization that could make for an interesting paper. Seeing as your a junior I would not expect your teacher to expect anything original. And if you manage to bet me you can point out to your teacher you beat a college educated aerospace engineer
-
Frankly I would stay away from ksp for this project. Just slapping together parts to solve a problem by trial and error will make a lousy paper. Did the teachers provide an example project? What grade are you in? A project would ether already be accomplished by some one else or would be Ph.D. Level math. While using others work is a must in engineering I suspect a professor would not be impressed.

One engine to rule them all
Nich replied to Nich's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
A lot of times to optimize a design you need an inbetween engine. I was thinking you would use the moddel you are closest too. -
You are so wrong on SRBs. Using LFBs are the equivalent of using $100 dollar gold plated Monster HDMI cables when a $2 chinese cable will work just fine.
-
DV to orbit doesn't really work for spaceplanes. You need about 800-900 LFO DV and 3000-4000 of DV but that is my style

Fairing Stability Problems

Just an FYI it takes more DV to land on the mun then to land on duna -
Fairing Stability Problems
Nich replied to jakeb1993's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
in 1.0.5 struts are required I have had payloads flex out of the fairings. Struts fixed this. I agree TWR is too high, and fairing lift bug is probably killing you. Struts from the fairing base to external tanks will help solidify the shell. -
Considering 2% of launch weight is 6% or more of payload depending on payload fraction this make sense
-
His would probably be better as a mod idea then something for stock. The PES (perpously engineered engine) gives you sliders so you can set your atmospheric isp vacuum isp thurst gimbol range and form factor and use these to determine the mass of the engine. in the tech tree it would require nuke heavy and ion. above a certain isp you would be required to use liquid or zenon. more thrust = more mass more isp = more mass idealy if you recreate an engine exactly you get the same mass but the real benefits come from removing what you don't need
-
From a sandbox perspective It would be nice if the 1.25m parts were more competitive via a 2.5 and 3.5m nerf. Although from a career perspective you would cry.

Can we talk about Life Support?
Nich replied to Pthigrivi's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
You do realize in tac recyclers don't pay for them selves until you have 9 kerbals for more then 8 years. Life support is pretty boring just make a rocket and add 6 years of supply's they are obligatory parts that are slowing my frame rate. I would prefer the mass added to my capsules. So a capsule with 10 years supply's weights 15 times a base capsule and defines the length of the mission. -
Need help rendevousing/docking
Nich replied to Bundyfly's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Need to go faster directly at it -
Mammoths always have better DV for a single stage for a given twr
-
Don't forget kerbals need electricity when they get there as it looks like you have tac

How to get a good interplanetary encounter?
Nich replied to Yobobhi's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
move your burn node forwards and backwards slightly as ejection angle is very important -
Why won't my spaceplane lift?
Nich replied to danbomo's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I was thinking it should get to orbit if it can stay together why does staging show 7 engines -
Pretty sure claw can only have 2 dof although I have never tried rotation
-
Problem with getting an orange tank to orbit is the craft no longer looks like a shuttle. I am already playing lose and fast with the word shuttle using 2 orange tanks. Perhaps I should install tweak scale and get it more to my liking
-
I was board the other day and put together a shuttle capable of 1 full large ore tank in about 10 minutes. Did vector engines make this too easy? Is my payload a joke? I also feel like the vectors and kickbacks do not play well with each other. I am thinking vectors should have 1/4 to 1/3 the thrust of kickbacks or kickbacks need to be 3 or 4 times bigger

You want to drop to a highly elliptical orbit from minimus to kerbin and burn at pe to be more efficient setting your pe correctly is rather challenging

As an aerospace engineer I have seen 3 basic types of errors. System errors. A and b talk a talks in float 32 b listens in float 64 divide by zero errors overrun errors 361 degrees float overrun, int overrun you don't really have the tools the management or code access to really do proper testsing I would just play the game and keep logs. Knowledge of other bugs will help keep duplicate reporting to a minimum.

How do I recover scrap from the surface??
Nich replied to Loren Pechtel's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Check the challenge form there is a challenge for just this with a couple different techniques -
I was board and I got my plane to the island but over shot the runway
