totm aug 2023 What funny/interesting thing happened in your life today?

I read this and immediately thought it was about parasitoid wasps. -
I honestly wonder if they really need to use different tiles for the cone. Maybe for the very tip, sure, but the tiles are small enough that the curvature would be small at the scale of individual tiles, and I think you could keep using the same hexagonal tiles most of the way to the top.

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread

Definitely. That's a pretty small habitat though - for a little tradeoff in buoyancy, you could fill the balloon with breathing air, which floats in Venus' atmosphere, and live inside the balloon. -

Send the lander up to 40-60 km with a balloon, then send it to orbit with a rocket. Don't even bother with any kind of engine below the clouds. -

My back-of-the-napkin guesswork suggests somewhere around the 2e-7 mark for your chance of being selected upon entry as an average person. That's 0.00002%. Might be as good as 0.0002%, for the optimist?

Actually the current vessel is the center of space. But nobody ever makes a crater when crashing into the Mun!

Do you think we'll see any iridescent color on the steel after the spaceship reenters the atmosphere as the plasma sort of 'anodizes' the metal or as dust interacts with it? What will reused Starships look like?

Can't wait for the aerial shots of this.

There's a boat.

The frost on the nose has gone away, though.

Meanwhile, just on the other side of the fence, dozens of HD cameras are pointed right at you, live-streaming to ten thousand people.

Half the marching band at my school are engineers. I had done plenty of ensemble music in high school, so I chose to go solo with my music and join some other types of groups instead.
