Good question Maybe it'll only be ideal for flyby probes, and interstellar probes

China plans to launch Mars Probe by 2020
Spaceception replied to billbobjebkirk's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Hey, it looks like the 2020s will be "The Mars decade" Mars 2020 rover, (Possible) SpaceX Mars colony, Phooprint (ESA) Not to mention the several missions between now and 2020, and now this. Are there any other Mars missions in the 2020s? Thanks -

Really? Links? -
I didn't even know you guys were discussing that, I looked up photonic propulsion, but nothing came up, so I assumed that it hadn't discussed (Not much at least).

NASA recently did research on a propulsion system that could get humans to Mars in as little as 3 days for a 100 kg probe, and a Manned (Much heavier) spacecraft in a month. Now, we do know this tech exists, like Starwisp, but if they can scale up the lasers (And power) needed (With either massive solar panels, or fusion reactors), we could send a probe to Proxima Centauri by the end of the century, and have it get there in as little as 40 years. Now, there's no telling of whether this would get enough funding (Or any funding), but if it did, we could have a very fast propulsion system that could allow us to explore to solar system quickly. So what do you think about it? And do you guys think building something like this would be worth it?

What do you think about the Europa Mission
Spaceception replied to TheSealBrigade's topic in Science & Spaceflight
That's all right, I did that a fair amount of times, and I didn't fully figure out how the forums work until about a month ago Go to this thread, it'll help. -
What do you think about the Europa Mission
Spaceception replied to TheSealBrigade's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Before you post new threads, look them up in the search bar to make sure a similar thread hasn't been made yet. For example: To be fair, I did stuff like that a couple of times when I was new, and I'm pretty sure almost everyone else did that too., plus the thread above isn't exactly like this one, but it's a good point of reference. But other than that, I'm excited for it, from the "Potential of life" view, I'm really happy that there's a mandated lander, but from the scientific point of view, It's confusing why they would do that for a mission to go somewhere we don't really know about. -
That's very true, although if the planet in question has an atmosphere about as thick as Earths, the planet could rotate (Slowly) and have a day/night cycle of a couple days/weeks, if the planet has a large enough moon, that could help it rotate faster, and if the planet orbits a large M-dwarf, (Like Lalande 21185) the longer orbital period (40-120 days) could give it a larger chance of having a day/night cycle like Earths.

1: Threads like these should be in Sci/Spaceflight, don't worry, I reported it, and it should be moved shortly 2: Yes, most red dwarfs should be able to have life-supporting planets as long as they're not too active (Big flares), and if they're Large (Like Lalande 21185), although, smaller stars like Proxima should be able to have life-supporting planets if they're old (And hence not as active), but the chance of being tidally locked goes up hugely. EIDT: Hey, it was moved, that was quick.

I have a moon idea for Mir: Name: Whatever the heck you feel like calling it, I'm not very creative with names. Characteristics: It would have a mass roughly that of the Moon (About 92%), and would be covered in Ice, with a small iron core, the atmosphere on the moon would be 24% of Kerbins atmosphere, and is made of Water, Carbon dioxide, Methane, and small amounts of Oxygen (Which suggests that there's an underground ocean with microbial life) the average temperature is -23 c, and during its summer, liquid water would spill out on the surface at the equator, the moon is completely covered in clouds with large storm systems due to all the water vapor in the atmosphere. It has a very eccentric orbit around Mir, with an periapsis of 3,500,000, and an apoapsis of 9,800,000, it's doesn't have a very inclined orbit with an inclination of 1.3%

They'd need to be really big to counter-act the Coriolis effect. -
If someone is reading a post, and it gets locked as they're reading it (Not even the Moderator has gotten to it yet), and they decide to comment (Since, when the page loaded, it was still unlocked), would they be able to comment, or when they try to comment, it doesn't let them?

Challenge: build an improvised rocket.

I don't think that's as strong, it'd need to be pressurized, are there other (More powerful) chemical reactions?- 37 replies

Just make an imgur account and upload pictures directly from your computer, then press the dark "i" button on the top right where you make comments, add the ID, and it should appear here. Example: http://imgur.com/a/wblZJ, the "wbIZJ" part is the ID.
