KSP 2 Multiplayer Discussion Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Johnster_Space_Program's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
I see that as key. Likely to be a limited number of people on any MP game. Unlikely to be a free for all. But that is my guesswork as well. I'm envisioning that with Agencies a few KSC clones will be dropped around the planet. Emphasis on 'a few'. If players are cooperative they can all use the same launch facility, but different pads. If players are competing - they have to use their own particular KSC. Likely to be equatorially placed. Maybe each gets a KSC and a different place to use for Polar launching - like we get in SP. But to take Nate's words and envision a MMO? How many KSC facilities would be sprinkled across the planet? Minecraft realms allows a 10 player limit. That seems like a reasonable upper limit to MP in KSP2. No way we get shooter levels of players (64 or more) vying for space on Kerbin. /speculation- 1,629 replies

KSP 2 Multiplayer Discussion Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Johnster_Space_Program's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
Reminder - the PCG call-out about that a player-predicted MP implementation might be correct is not the same as Nate actually saying which of the many predictions are correct. PCG speculated that @Vl3dgot it right. He's speculated about a LOT of things vis MP. Only one line of his speculation posts is MMO-style. Clearly he wants a MMO style of MP - but that is the least likely implementation in my book. Nate said that there are 4 launch pads at KSC (in a different reveal). Nate said that MP introduced 'Agencies' with both cooperative and competitive play available: "Multiplayer introduces the concept of agencies, so you can work alongside friends within a single agency contributing to a single space program in a way that's cooperative," Simpson says. You can also play competitively between agencies, each of which is located at a different location on Kerbin. With multi-agency play you can have space races. We're excited to see all the new types of gameplay that emerge from multiplayer." The real 'new' news is that Agencies will get different locations around Kerbin to operate from.* That's all we know. Reread what PCG speculated: It's tantalizing to speculate, but it sounds like Kerbal forum member Vl3d—who wrote a post in April that envisioned KSP 2 multiplayer as "a competitive space-race team-based persistent-world MMO with inter-agency contracts and trade"—may be getting their dream for "the greatest game ever made." https://www.pcgamer.com/kerbal-space-program-2-is-going-to-let-you-have-competitive-multiplayer-space-races/ That, friends, is hype - not confirmation. * This should reduce griefing (but not eliminate ICBM / Plane PVP elements, entirely). Who knows what limits will be placed - but players in competition being scattered around the planet eliminates the 'easy' griefing.- 1,629 replies

KSP2 EA: Road map explained by Nate!
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Vl3d's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
I wrote elsewhere about this: our expectations are that the first step on the roadmap (Sandbox only) should be fairly short. The second step (Science - science gathering and tech tree progression) should be a bit longer. With Sandbox-only the main thing they are looking at is bugs in the parts, ship-building and physics systems and how various PC builds affect the game. Basically crash and performance testing across the variety of machines people hope to play the game on. They'll get posts on everything from complaining about not being able to play on a Surface tablet to "my Ryzen 9 7950x, 4090 with 32gb DDR5-6000 RAM PC bogs down with memory leaks!!!" They get to see 1080p/1440/4k @ 64hz - 240hz complaints. They get to field all the complaints about the UI choices and basic assumptions about what players want and start finding the glaring bugs like 'my Kerbal got stuck under the plane and can't move' stuff. I like to think they've already discovered and fixed all the big conflicts - so by releasing into the wild they will find and fix the chunky bugs. I don't think this should take that long - likely a short matter of months to tackle all the easy to find stuff. Moving on to Science lets them work on the balance assumptions and basic economic issues. Players will be motivated to go to specific places on various bodies and test all the 'fun stuff' Kerbals do beyond planting flags and getting EVA reports. We will be putting Kerbals and ships and science stuff into a lot of weird configurations the problems we find during this part should be a lot more granular. Science should also add new parts (progression elements like rockets and modules) not just science parts. Again - I don't think this step will take a heck of a long time. Mostly because at this point we get (effectively) a feature-complete upgrade of KSP, skinned as KSP2 with the underlying improvements in the physics system and other upgrades baked into the build. After that the steps all add the new stuff. Who knows how long it will take. I've been critical about MP - but Nate seems positive that it will be implemented. And while I was convinced it would always be a TBD 'feature', since the PCG show I'm starting to think it may actually happen... And within a reasonable time frame. -
totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
So I scanned around until I got to what I think is the relevant portion... Seems like there are a bunch of cracked and broken and missing tiles. The comments were 'every level this goes up, maybe tack on another week before 1st orbital flight.'. Reason for the scaffolding is that it's very windy this time of year and using the man basket runs a great risk for breaking additional tiles b/c it's impossible to keep the basket from hitting the side of the ship when it's blowing around in the wind. -

What is all the scaffolding? -
I think the fascinating part of this map is when you realize that the old, red elliptical galaxies and those represented only as quasars have evolved in the time between when the light was cast in our direction and 'now'. * They don't look like that anymore. *I know: there is no universal 'now' only a relative now - but even the most primitive looking image has had billions of years to change from what we see to maybe something similar to the closest galaxies we can image to anything from being shredded to merged to fading out - whatever they look like now - it is nothing like what we can see.

*or at least a slice of the observable universe! https://mapoftheuniverse.net/ Pretty cool! "The map is a "slice of the universe" that combines more than 20 years of data to showcase information previously only seen by scientists with "pinpoint accuracy and sweeping beauty," Johns Hopkins said. In it, people can see a colorful rainbow spectrum of dots representing the actual positions and colors of 200,000 galaxies, each filled with their own billions of stars and planets. The spectrum is so vast that it dates back 13.7 billion years to a bright tie-dyed-esque line that shows an actual photo of the edge of the observable universe. Called the "Cosmic Microwave Background," the image is the first flash of light emitted after the big bang." Here's the article describing the work: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/you-can-now-explore-the-cosmos-to-the-edge-of-what-can-be-seen-in-new-interactive-map/

KSP2 EA: Road map explained by Nate!

This is just another reprint by PCG of the 'interview' from the video -
Can the programmer just create a frame (visible or invisible) around the edge of the display, and let players move UI elements (Nav Ball, mission planning, warp, etc) around the edge of the screen and have it snap to the frame? Or choose to snap some UI elements to the frame and other UI elements to a UI previously placed (to cluster or stack them)? (read a fairly lengthy post by someone who does not like the new UI layout - and I know nothing about UI design)

KSP2 Hype Train Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
I finally got a chance to read the PCG article - which is, ultimately, nothing more than a restatement of the NS interview from the video... With a completely speculated bit by the author about Vl3d's post. NS said what he said - and anything other than that was guesswork -

Okay - I was wrong. In a very good way. I think some here will be very happy with the explication of MP, Resource Management and Colonies, and seeing all the procedural wings in use in crafts and Kars. I really did not think they would be as open and optimistic about the future progression of the EA - they were solid on MP and colonies and while I'd have liked more on the Science Progression slice - hearing about MP, Agencies (Space Races!) and that some of the aspects of the Resource Management system might be 'Satisfactory - lite' ish (my own interpretation) was cool! Yeah - I kept thinking about how I doubted KSP2 would be anything like @Vl3dwas writing about... Now I really have to read the article! GJ prognosticators! I did not get that - there are only 4 launch pads - so I am still thinking Realm type servers rather than MMO open world (private server not general MP) /PureSpeculation! -
The James Webb Space Telescope and stuff
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Streetwind's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Protostar. Given its age and its brightness in far-infrared light, L1527 is considered a class 0 protostar, the earliest stage of star formation. Protostars like these, which are still cocooned in a dark cloud of dust and gas, have a long way to go before they become fully-fledged stars. L1527 doesn’t generate its own energy through the nuclear fusion of hydrogen yet, an essential characteristic of stars. Its shape, while mostly spherical, is also unstable, taking the form of a small, hot, and puffy clump of gas somewhere between 20% and 40% of the mass of our Sun. https://esawebb.org/news/weic2219/- 869 replies

The Analysis of Sea Levels.
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to mikegarrison's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You are correct that FT does not solve all problems, and we can be guaranteed that despite the problems we have and know of now - new problems will arise. My point is that with free movement of goods and services, we (humanity) have a better ability to deal with problems than the world did in the bad old days of competing empires and hegemonies. -

Depends on the purpose of your planting. For economic, monoculture is king. For restoration / carbon capture? Biodiverse -

That's been an interesting shift in the last several years. I think when "Mr. Beast" started his campaign to 'plant xmillion trees' people got interested, big time; which was followed by lots of smart people saying "hey, we need to plant trees where trees go, plant/allow grasslands to be diverse, and put the right trees (and etc.) in the right spots". You see a lot more about biodiversity and balance in planting, reclamation and 'buffer zones' than you used to. Shows we actually can be smart! -

I'm a bit leery of expecting too much 'new'. Judging from past shows, as part of a longer 2023 Preview, KSP2 will get only a short segment. Maybe 2 minutes not counting whatever words they get from Nate. Usually, it's a trailer. Sometimes you get a bit of gameplay. The team's gonna want to highlight what's possible in the game - so I'd expect a broad array of images designed to communicate what KSP2 will be to audiences that aren't 'us.' Like the 'potential new player' person. Perhaps a new trailer? I'd wait for the next installment of whatever they release with an Arecibo message before anticipating a whole lot of 'hey KSP fans, here's the development update' with new stuff for us to analyze.
