Considering I just bought an Insta... That would be my inclination. Still learning how to use it. (At least for something more than hard-boiling eggs) Speaking of which - I owe a friend for a favor. Problem is she's vegitarian. Anyone got a good Insta-Pot vegitarian meal (6 adult appetites)?

Coincidentally, last night I told my son about a time I popped the hood on a lady's car trying to put out an engine fire. Thankfully someone grabbed me and yanked me back as the hood came open; big woosh. Dumped the whole extinquisher in there... and the damn thing still dripped fire on the ground. Firefighters told me I got lucky. Just some singed eyebrows. (Point being... unless you REALLY have to... don't.)

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I did not hear the term being used, at least not regularly, until SX started dumping multiple satellites per mission. I know that GPS and Iridium can be called 'constellations' - but my impression was that each of those were large satellites that were (effectively) individually placed by different rocket launches. So - is there a different term for that? Or does 'constellation' simply refer to a group of related satellites? (My intent was to suggest a single mission that could dump a bunch of satellites into lunar orbit for low cost and high return. I should have thought about that! -
(Too old to make this into a proper F-35 meme)

Given that 'constellations' of satellites are fairly new... Has any consideration been given to seeding a constellation into lunar orbit for 'anywhere' communication with future missions? Six equidistant small sats should be able to cover the entire orbit, I would think... -
https://apnews.com/article/china-navy-philippines-manila-south-sea-ee4c0a7b080a27ad559105a44bdfcf31 China’s coast guard forcibly seized apparent Chinese rocket debris that was being towed by the Philippine navy, in the latest confrontation in the disputed South China Sea, a Philippine military commander said Monday. The Chinese vessel twice blocked the Philippine naval boat before seizing the debris it was towing Sunday off Philippine-occupied Thitu island, Vice Admiral Alberto Carlos said. He said no one was injured in the incident.

Next thing to invent: a swappable cargo hold for each truck - kind of like the aluminum things they put into planes. The driver can return the truck to the distribution center and park it for charging and then a 'forklift' can pull out the cargo innards and swap to a fully charged vehicle - given that the sorting has already been done.

The Upcoming Movies (and Movie Trailers) MegaThread!
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to StrandedonEarth's topic in The Lounge
That's one of the better things that they've done with the story. It really does add a layer of complexity to the telling. I'm a couple of episodes from finishing. Sadly getting a feel for what the reveal is going to be (don't tell me!) - and if I'm right, it's going to be a poor-man's rendition of what Dark did so well. (relationships are not what you think they are, characters are not who you thought) That show was very well crafted. This is well done and beautiful - but I fear that the ending will feel thin. ... (New post) I can strongly recommend 'The English' Gut punch of a show. -
KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
You have your work cut out for you then. Not to be insulting - but your preamble (what you want) does not compute with what you have / intend. Allow me to explain: Laptop architecture is notorious for having a severely limited upgrade path. It's why PC gamers still use gigantic boxes for their builds. The boxes ensure flexibility and a virtually limitless upgrade path. Sure, some are fancy looking - but basically they are just honking big boxes you can put anything into. Laptops rarely offer universal form factors. Quite often the GPUs are custom to that machine - and this severely constrains your options. CPUs, RAM and SSDs are more often capable of being swapped and upgraded within a laptop than GPUs are. Now... Given that you are determined to use a laptop - you don't need that much processing power to max out your graphics. I'm guessing you have a 15 inch 60hz 1080p screen hinged to the keyboard. There is every likelihood that something as old as a GeForce GTX 970 can push all the pixels stock KSP2 will present to that class of monitor. This is because the newer cards are actually way over powered for 60hz 1080p. They practically require 240hz 1440 or 144hz 4k to be worth spending the money on. For 60hz 1080p - they are so much overkill that you are wasting money on the upgrade. In other words - unless you have a monitor that needs the newest architecture - don't worry about a recent Gen GPU. So what you should do is Google for GPUs that fit your laptop - and that is going to take some work. A 2000 series Nvidia or the comparable AMD is the best you need - and frankly, a 1000 series may be sufficient. I'm not sure about the Intel chips - but a newer i5 is likely all that you need. Sure, if you find a newer mobile i7 that your Mobo will accept and you can afford... Plug it in! The place to start is with the latest updates to your Mobo documents. Go to the HP website and find it. It will tell you what is the most recent memory modules , CPU, etc that the Mobo can talk with. That defines your limiting factor. Do not just buy something and hope you can plug it into your box. Laptops are nowhere near as forgiving as desktop builds. You may have to to flash an update to get the machine to accept newer parts. That is not as scary as it used to be. I also recommend [H]ardforum for more details! (Edit: Like after you figure out what your mobo will take from the HP page, and you need advice on how to safely flash it, or run into problems figuring out how to safely disconnect a pernicious ribbon cable. [H] is my go-to place for hardware and upgrade stuff) GL! -
Anyone who grew up in a 1950s-1970s house with a dusty electric wall heater in the bathroom might relate. The kind where the rows of coiled wires glow a dull red and you have to stand close enough to maybe catch the towel on fire just to get warm, and the paint around the edges is permanently yellowed and cracked.... Makes the air smell dry, dusty and hot. Picture one of those. Imagine walking into your kitchen and smelling fresh hot cat spray boiling off one. The smell permeates the room and assaults your nasal passages. I'm standing around looking for the heater and the cat (we don't have one - wife is allergic) and my kids, who are eating microwave sausage biscuits are staring at me funny. Phantom smells. No cat. No heater. But my brain is telling me that's what happened to my kitchen. At least I can smell coffee. ... Covid is weird. We've all had nasal congestion from a cold or the flu. The kind where you get a stuffy nose and can't smell much. Sometimes you cannot even breathe through your nose or one nostril. Covid is nothing like that. There is a sense of sinus congestion - but you can always inhale through both nostrils. It seems like to make up for not smelling anything you are more aware of the air-feel of the inner structure of your nose and sinuses. Each breath is an intimacy of air moving. You have a perpetual feeling that your lower sinuses (where you feel post nasal drip) and upper sinuses (the part near the eyes where you get a headache) are kinda clogged, but the main channel is open. There is a 'ring' of hard cartilage (the part they always, painfully, shove the q-tip into when swabbing) - that part of each nostril feels particularly aware - telling you about the air passing by and the few smells it can discern. The 'I have a cold and can't smell anything' literally does not prepare you for the experience of Covid. It's like becoming disabled. It's one of the five senses - and probably the one we least think about and take most for granted... But when it's gone, your brain is distressed in ways that you can't expect.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/30/world/mind-control-parasite-toxoplasmosis-wolves-scn/index.html This is cool - and creepy. "When it comes to evolutionary survival, T. gondii is optimized for cats and their prey, but other animals can get caught in the biochemical crossfire, with similar behavior-altering results. Even humans can be affected. Some behavioral changes — including taking risks in business, road rage and even schizophrenia — may be associated with T. gondii infection. And now, a recent study in the journal Communications Biology has shown the first evidence of T. gondii’s effect on gray wolves"

KSP 2 Multiplayer Discussion Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Johnster_Space_Program's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
Won't one player's entire universe have to change when they splice? For the Jool player... All the planets and moons would be 6+ years (+/-) evolved compared to the KSOI player. When they splice time... Won't the positions of everything have to be complementary? This might not be a problem for two players who each have only one mission running at a time (and don't get me started on what this might mean for science that gathers over time) - but what if each player has a 'side' mission going?- 1,629 replies

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I think there is perhaps too much weight given to the thought that a black hole devours all that it encounters. From what I have read, a 'wandering BH' is probably more likely to fling stars away than capture them. IIRC it would take a 3-body interaction to capture a star - like one of a binary pair - with the other tossed away. SMBH 'feed' themselves because of a combination of tidal forces and friction slowing down stars and other material in their disks and by other bodies within changing the trajectories of nearby objects in the deep well. But a lone star going SN and leaving a BH, even if it is diving through a density of stars in its orbit around a SMBH should still follow the rules of orbital mechanics. Meaning that the conditions must be just right for it to capture another star and gain its mass. And I'm thinking those conditions are rare. -
It is a good pic. Expressing no opinion on whether to keep or revert - this is more a comment on me having an unexpected reaction to change. Striking how 'used to something' we can be, all without recognizing that we relate one thing to another. When I saw your forum name with a different avatar after so long... It was unexpectedly unexpected. Interresant

@Gargamel- as the person who criticized my lack of profile picture, which in combination with my blistering wit love of sarcasm and dry humor, that reading my posts sans picture might confuse one as to whether it is me or another notorious forum snark... Hey - was it originally in English? I can't find a non-dubbed German version. (Dark was a joy to watch in German) -
By 'struggle' I mean anything not over 80fps. The whole purpose of this build was to get above 60fps and have really smooth performance on a bigger screen with a pixel density that did not annoy me. Squad and Tarkov and MSFS come to mind - but I'm not playing shooters atm, and yes, I like the goodies active. But tbh - in most everything I do have RTX off b/c it does eat performance quite a bit.

Yeah - many of the cards are quite capable - I don't remember if I wrote about it - but much of the new is shaders and ray tracing and memory improvements that make the newer cards attractive, not merely rasterization performance. I'd have tried my 970 out on the new monitor had it come before the 3070... and suspect it could have handled 4k with some downgrading of settings. But the 3070 came first and I couldn't be bothered to revert. That said; some of the games I play do struggle with framerates. I'm eagerly awaiting the price-performance of the AMD offerings.

This is what 'commercial space' looks like. Love it! -
Wow! Closest I got was Rainier the year before it blew - memorable because we were above the clouds and looking South we could see several peaks thrusting through. (flat plain of white cloud and a blisteringly blue sky above.). Each peak looked like an island. My mom told us that every mountain we could see was a different volcano and the Park Ranger named all of them for us - St Helen's being notably close. Hood was visible, too. At the time I was more amazed to be seeing Oregon than anything. Went to the same spot years later and while it was cloudless, it was amazing to see just how 'gone' St Helen's was. For a while we kept a jar of ash. I try to explain how significant it was to my kids... And fail.
