  1. That and SSME's on ET seem like most plausible design and that's going to be my next project. It's going to be a capital B' to fly in efficient manner though.
  2. You're looking at "engineless orbiter" from ShuttleVariations pdf. It's an extended Shuttle with only OMS engines and no SSME's. Looks pretty dope, doesn't it? Does anyone know how designers thought to get this thing in to space? Some say Area 51 has some spectacular tech in there, so does NASA hyper edit?
  3. Why not? As elegantly explained, it would be hard to make one visible by naked eye but you could make a billboard visible with binoculars pretty easily. I would imagine it could be fabricated from film and truss structure like ISS main solar panels so it could have a solar panel on the backside and lit up adverts or other things on side facing the Earth. How would I get rid of it? If it was up to me everything going up there would be required to have a plan and means to deorbit safely. In my saves this is achieved with few separatrons, ant or some modded engine.
  4. Random quick dust storms on Duna and some earthquakes on planets with volcanoes.
  5. As a difficulty option, yes. Integrate USI, BAM, problem solved.
  6. If there were launch sites at higher latitudes I'd be all for this. Winter on equator would be pretty fatal for kerbalkind. In some sense this could be done by expanding and contracting poles. But wait, there's no axial tilt to cause seasons! No problem, Kerbin could be put on slightly elliptical orbit.
  7. With stick like rockets I often bind abort to G, even if I have lander on board. That way it's very easy to kick the capsule off the rocket and land safely.
  8. In subassemblies I have my go to rockets classed as type (LLV, MLV, HLV and SHLV according to their payload size and weight), followed by name (Soyuz, Delta II, Delta IV, SLS1/2) and amount of cores and SRB's and finally if I rate design safe enough for crew and how many. It yields names like: -LLV Delta II 18U -MLV Soyuz 5M2 -MLV Proton 1U -HLV SLS 12M3. It kinda looks like Russian GRAU system. Payloads are named after destination planet (+moon or roids on dres) if I need to save them. I rarely use same payload twice with few exceptions like light atmospheric lander which I often launch at Eve and Duna and their moons.
  9. My system is littered with abandoned things. Stations, rovers, you name it, but everyone always gets home!
  10. 225 and 747 are both big planes and financial commitments. - Boeing committed to 747 heavily making commercial operators feel confident in buying them. Airlines and such knew that economics of scale would benefit them greatly. One An-225 was built and they had another kinda under construction. - Antonov had no clear commitment to this project and no sane person would buy unique plane with high initial and operating costs associated with it's uniqueness. - On the other hand Antonov had committed itself on Ruslan and it became sort of economic success with 55 delivered so far. Production line remains open. No-one wants to invest in aircraft if technical support for the type is unsure. I hadn't seen any info on the buyer. Thanks! As 225's price tag and operating costs come down it might become viable. We have Scaled Composites which created it's own carrier aircraft and as space tourism takes off everyone wants to get involved.
  11. It's going to be completed now and sold to unnamed Chinese corporation. I've understood that Mriya and Ruslan have somewhat limited parts commonality, so if something breaks in 225 there is a real chance replacement parts need to be custom made for that specific aircraft. No commercial operator wants to take a risk of having this large jet sitting on tarmac for half a year while they wait for replacement parts but with open production line parts should be available faster and cheaper. No-one would have bought the second 747 either if there was no spare parts available.
  12. China, Ukraine and Antonov have agreed on reviving An-225 and opening a production line in China. This is great news in many ways for everyone! As more planes are being produced on established production line cost by unit should go down, and as more planes are being built replacement parts should become more affordable and hence aircraft can be stressed more with heavier payloads and generally more demanding flying should become possible. I'd bet we'll see someone enter the launch market with affordable, 225 mounted launch system in few years. Maybe we'll see MAKS or similar project revived/developed as suitable carrier aircraft become more numerous and presumably widespread. https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/an-225-revival-proposed-in-new-antonov-china-pact-428949/ http://www.janes.com/article/63341/china-and-ukraine-agree-to-restart-an-225-production http://www.rusaviainsider.com/antonov-agrees-on-an-225-assembly-in-china/
  13. B-47's used RATO bottles and water injection to take off with max fuel and weapons payload, so it has been done in reality to some extent.
  14. Soyuz, one orbital module, japanese and (russian?) Apollo-ish capsules seem to have full IVA.
  15. They are two highly contrasting colours and they're painted in stripe patterns so it is easier to see if rocket starts to roll. Today engineers have other means to determine if rocket rolls and the cameras are much better than they used to be making patterns obsolete. Reason why most rockets are white is to reflect sun light and reduce boil off.
  16. Even a lousy plan is better than no plan. At least SLS means NASA is engineering something new and not just putzing around in LEO as they used to. Cancel SLS and you could axe whole organization too as they become bit redundant if they have no spacecraft or rockets.
  17. What do you guys think of cultural impact of the Shuttle program? It was most launched manned American spacecraft and every time it was launched it gathered a large crowd to watch it. It's also in the spotlight in multiple movies, games and books and I'd imagine it has inspired people to pursue science related careers and so created intellectual capital like no other program since Apollo.
  18. Thanks for clarification, StoryMusgrave. I ran some tests and it is possible to mount Canadarm on gantry rail. Shoulder piece seems to be somewhat picky of the nodes though. Cubic octagonal strut accepts arm shoulder in some conditions.
  19. I don't know of any mods that affect thrust curves alone.
  20. I believe real shuttles had both arms mounted near cockpit. Something like this but with ability to mount another arm to opposite end of the cargo bay would be great! Would it be possible to have a mounting point for arm at all four corners of all the stock cargo bays? It would make things bit easier and would allow for extended shuttles. I'm not sure if Gantry arm comes from KIS/KAS or infernal robotics. Would it be possible to add a mounting point for shoulder in that piece? It would be a great combination for space stations and such. Your mod is great and one of my 'must haves'.
  21. One way to make things a lot more interesting would be to give geologically active worlds some real mountains like these in North of KSC. They're fun to fly around, they could hide some sweet easter eggs and they would be dangerous to land to, forcing player to plot re-entry and landing to make sure craft doesn't slam in a mountain.
  22. Would it be possible to mount two arms to opposite ends of the cargo bay and use one to grab the station and use another to install the module?
  23. This mod is exactly what I've always wanted! Very good job with idea, models and textures. All top notch!
  24. I think it would be more in line with game's current goofy and playful atmosphere if Kerbals fell to sleep/hibernation when they run out of snacks. Satellites get bricked if they run out of battery power but they can be revived once someone manually opens the solar panels. They would be like space faring tardigrades! Edit, and then I stumble upon a mod that does exactly this life support thing without additional death.
