Disconnect science from tech research

This is a strange thing to ask for, essentially you want no progress in your game and to have everything unlocked at the start, there's sandbox for that, and if you want contracts as well there's cheats built into KSP to give you this exact experience. Limits and progression are common in games, even as far back as pacman you don't start with the power pill, the same is true of the vast number of games since. But if you really wanted to "Disconnect science from tech research" it is already possible in the stock game, though I guess as it's not the default or a highly visible setting it's not good enough, but that would be a strange argument to make from anyone prepared to use mods. Simply click the little "Difficulty options" button when you make a new game, the options you want are: No entry purchase required on research, turn this off. Science rewards, turn this to 10%, if you want to disable it completely look for the ScienceGainMultiplier line in your save, after all you don't want to be linking science to progress by converting it into a currency you can use. Funds rewards, turn this down, 50% is good, go lower for more challenge, you'll find out why in a moment. Start your new game. Now you'll need the cheats again, but only one, open the cheat menu and hold the modkey until the extra cheats appear, click on Max research. That's it, now you are limited only by what you can afford, and you will have to pay to unlock new tech so choose wisely. Of course this does mean you still have to "go places to unlock new parts", those contracts won't complete themselves and you can't have everything for free, if that's still too limiting, well, you know where the cheats are I'm sure NASA, the ESA and Roscosmos would all love to start with SSTO spaceplanes and NTR engines, but they require funding, just like in your new disconnected science career game, where science is now just a means to complete those contracts that pay for everything. That's the wonderful thing about KSP, players can tailor things to their tastes, if they choose to do so. -
Linux -- Saved Game Vanished

Okay try two things please. First, move all the save folders except training and scenarios to another folder outside of KSP, you may want to try loading them in future but for now they need to be removed. Two, move the settings.cfg to the same place, that way KSP can make a new settings.cfg with the default res of 1280x720 windowed mode. KSP should start in a window with no funny business, if not use both the command line arguments mentioned before, and check that new saves will show correctly.- 7 replies

Happy Thursday everyone, and welcome back to the KSP forums threads of the month. In our increasingly environmentally concious age electric power is replacing internal combustion, even in KSP. I get dizzy just thinking of this one... Something a little different from fanworks, a guidance system for RSS written in kOS. And a world first for KSP, circumnavigating Kerbin in a stock turboprop aircraft. A blast from the past but still going, check out this excellent parts pack. Some actual science in the science labs... And finally, broaden your horizons with this collection of quotes. Yes, 1.0.5 is made in Unity3D version 4, while 1.1 and newer use Unity3D version 5, Enlighten was added to the Unity3D engine to provide dynamic lighting and can't be removed. This might be a driver bug, I have not tried the Nvidia 370.23 driver yet, I'm using 367 from the Ubuntu repository, but am thinking of downgrading because it's caused the colours to be incorrectly displayed when running Quake 2. This doesn't happen with nouveau on my GTX650 or the radeonSI driver on my AMD A10's HD7880. -

That is Steams file, what you need to do here is slightly different. In your Steam client right click on KSP and select Properties from the menu, on the new window that opens you need to click on 'set launch options' This will open a smaller box, add -force-glcore to that box then click 'ok' Close the Steam properties window and start KSP either via the Steam client or the desktop file. -

I can load the file, I'm wondering if this might be a permissions issue, in that KSP is being blocked from loading the files by the operating system. One thing to test would be to unzip KSP to a new folder and make it fully read/writeable, here's a guide but I don't know how good it is. Can you give this a try and let us know what happens please. -

Okay this is just really strange, I also use Nvidia but I have an AMD A10 apu, I have one enlighten thread and the resolution is set in one action. Does running KSP with -force-gfx-direct improve things for you? -

Can you try KSP without -force-glcore please, it should not be required with Nvidia and the proprietary drivers. It might be why KSP is having trouble setting the resolution as can be seen in the player.log And 8 threads for Enlighten. -

Not all Unity games are made in the same version of Unity, most are still made in Unity4 and may be more or less tolerant of this, it's not something I can easily test though as I am not using Windows. All the log shows is a loss of the D3D device. This might stop happening with the next update of KSP as it will be using an updated version of Unity, as anything at the engine level is outside of Squads control. -

Unfortunately the behaviour of the Unity game engine when alt tabbing is not something Squad can address. You could try using -popupwindow and match KSP's resolution to your desktop, this will give you a full screen sized window with no window furniture. Another workaround is to use alt enter to switch from fullscreen to windowed and back, as in windowed mode the engine is much more tolerant of alt tabbing. -

Hi @Tim_p, to offer any sort of fix we'd have to first know what is going wrong here, it's certainly not normal, I also use Linux and KSP doesn't use 100% cpu even on my really old PC. Please upload your KSP.log, Player.log and hardinfo report to a site like dropbox.com and I'll take a look. -

I also thought it might be due to a linux bug, but I think it might be one or more of the saves themselves @MagicFireCaster. This certainly isn't right: Please try moving your saves to another folder outside of the saves folder, scenarios and training can be left behind, and see if new saves will show in the resume game dialogue. If the new save works then it's likely the old saves are corrupt, you could try the last quicksave or backup save from each, one may still work. -

There's still nothing in the log that points to a problem other than insufficient video memory, or possibly this line. That's near the end of the file and doesn't tell me what was not handled, if you have not yet tried redownloading KSP then please give that a go in case you have a corrupted download. -

Hello DarkPraetor, Squad are from Mexico so it's currently very early on a Monday morning for them, and 3 hours ago would have been about 2:45am, so please give them time to arrive at work and check the support emails.

AMD graphics? You can try adding -force-gfx-direct as well, that can help with some AMD cards. If you could post your Player.log to dropbox for me that would be great, it's in /home/username/.confog/unity3d/Squad/Kerbal Space Program/- 7 replies

Changing focus in map view

Hi liquidmetalrob, [ and ] are for vessels within physics range which is usually 2.5km, though it's 22.5km for stuff that is airborne. Your Kerbal will be splashed down, so you need to find their icon on Kerbin in map view to switch to them. The icons can be close together, and you will need the Kerbal filter enabled, mouse over the top edge of the screen in map view. Hope this helps ! -
Well what you describe is not a known issue with KSP, so something is causing this for you. Your 30 years of IT experience may not have steeled you to the fact that Steam doesn't always install games properly, and verifying the cache can solve issues with KSP from Steam in many cases. It's possible your install is broken, for example this is in your logs. Which doesn't normally occur. Your existing saves might be corrupt, and if you upload your saves I can test them as well, as all I have to go on is your description and pic which shows exactly what happens when no Kerbals were placed in the vessel. Notice it says "not enough crew 0/1", and the purple light means you have no control which is also mentioned in the log. Your hardware looks fine, but an unanswered question is what other software are you running that can interfere with KSP? Usually if KSP crashes the running processes are written to the log, but as that is not the case here please also upload screenshots or a list of your taskmanager processes. Known troublemakers are monitoring software such as PrecisionX and Blaze Video, Fraps as well can cause issues. And no, a video isn't much help, what I need to do is reproduce this or eliminate possible causes until it goes away.
