  1. Hi and welcome to the forums.
  2. I built a 43 million fund test bed for some KSPI-E reactors and some Daedalus engines. It has no escape pods and almost no back up redundancies so I called it the Icarus. And because that is the kind of thing Jeb loves to fly, I sent Jeb, Bill, and a couple white suits to Dres. What could possibly go wrong, right? The 0.3 TWR is a bit awful but 11% of the speed of light worth of dV is really sweet.
  3. Never had a kerbal exit the solar system. But I also never had a kerbal traveling at 16 km/s without a spaceship either. I did once have an unmanned munar mining truck crash into a glitch in reality at about 5 m/s instantly accelerate to 20% of the speed of light and leave the system.
  4. KSPI-E has a couple of nuke engines. One is a replacement for the LV-N(you can still use the original unmodified, though). Heat management becomes the more important factor in thermonuclear power and ISP is tied to reactor temp. You don't get a whole lot of control, unfortunately, over the throttling of the thermal systems but it does most of those things automatically.
  5. I drove for a long time on Duna. Well, mechjeb acted as cruise control (because the rover auto pilot doesn't want to steer anymore) as I just pointed my rover in the general direction I wanted to go. I watched a really nice Duna sunset (thanks EVE/SVE/scatterer) and drove into the night. Sometime about Duna midnight a really nasty sandstorm hit (again thanks EVE/SVE/scatterer). I had to stop because I couldn't see anything and after blowing out a tire on a rock after a jump that would have made them Duke boys jealous, I decided it wasn't worth driving in those conditions. The storm continued for about 4 hours. I continued for a bit into the morning and got a nice pic of the red planet. Total drive distance so far is 938km. I also played a short game of Endless Space 2 while some of this driving was occurring. I guess thats an unintended bonus of KSP being mostly single threaded, you can listen to music and play another game while its also doing things and not slow anything down. Here's the pic I grabbed today.
  6. I always thought you have to go outside and do it from the right click menu on the part with a kerbal near it.
  7. Stock thermal management systems are mostly useless except for the case of ISRU operations. There does seem to be a bug when time warping or just loading the craft/base that has a lot of heat load. Sometimes I have to click the "ignore max temp" in the alt-f12 menu just to load a craft. If you are looking for better thermal management systems, look at near future and/or KSPI-E. They both have some nice options like a large reaction wheel that is also a radiator that performs well in atmosphere. I haven't tested either mods thermal systems for mitigating shock heating. If they don't, I would suspect KSP has a buggy heat code.
  8. I honestly couldn't tell you if KSP is any good on PC because I have played with so many mods (over 70) for so long that I really don't remember what the stock experience is like. But it is totally worth the asking price to get the thing all those mods work on.
  9. My Duna flyer experiment failed spectacularly. It entered the atmosphere just fine and glided ok. I could even fly in a controlled manner at fairly low altitudes but at a somewhat high speed (>300m/s). I got some nice science done and then that's when I realized that landing at 300m/s just wasn't going to happen. I lined up the landing three times. One of those times I damaged the tail on one of the booms. On the final approach I threw the electric props in reverse right before touchdown. The uneven ground caused a bounce that rolled the plane left and the left wing collided with the ground. After the tumbling fiery carnage stopped, Val and Bob were still alive but the sci canister (the most important part) was destroyed. Main life support was also destroyed(secondary LS has only 5h) but there was a rover that landed just over 60km away. Val and Bob were saved. here's a pic of the crash. I'll try a Duna flyer again. Perhaps with vtol rockets next time.
  10. I had a kerbal just disappear from the cupola of a large ship (443 parts 1800 tons) just yesterday. I guess the Kraken got him. The worst part about it is I don't even remember his name. I would think if someone just up and vanished from existence that someone would remember them. I believe a fate worse than death is to not be remembered. And, even worse still, all his co-workers are just smiling away like nothing ever happened. They don't even seem to care that no one is flying the ship.
  11. If our ISRU behavior is different, that is a definite possibility. But, I have complained to myself for quite some time about how slow refrigeration is in KSPI-E. Come to think of it, I have never used KSPI-E without a bunch of other mods installed so maybe I'll troubleshoot it. Even though I troubleshoot things(electrical gremlins) for a living and I don't really enjoy doing it in my free time.
  12. sure, a rocket couldn't benefit without specialized equipment but, a base that is actively drilling holes in the ground could use the holes for a heat field type of system which works very well. But, for my specific problem, I think a base that is landed on minmus and was designed specifically to extract hydrates, process them to water, split water to H2 and O2, then refrigerate those gases to liquid products shouldn't be bottlenecked by the refrigeration cycle so bad that all the hydrate, water, and gaseous H2 and O2 tanks stay full while waiting months for the liquid process to complete. That's why I would like to just change a setting or something to make the process faster. Edit: I added 3 more ISRU refrigerators(total 4) to get near the desired speed. Just trying to keep parts count down still makes me want to change the speed of the conversion.
  13. ISRU refrigerator is also very slow and if it uses 1 MW it is awfully slow. Power generation isn't a problem though. I generate, usually, way more than I need but, I would expect refrigeration to be faster than that and even faster still when landed. Heat management (and heat exchange processes like gas to liquid) when landed should be much easier because you can exchange heat with the ground but thats a whole other thing.
  14. Is there a reason the gas to liquid conversion is so slow? Is this intended? It takes months of game time to turn H2 to LH2(for instance. others like CH4 similar) in meaningful quantities. My experience with gas to liquid conversion (automotive) tells me you can convert a couple of kg of gas per minute with only a couple of kilowatts of engine power(not including the thermal work done by the condenser). If this is intended, is there something I can change in the config file to alter the behavior? Also, does this process generate heat and, if not, can I change a config to make it?
  15. I don't think you can remove it from the stock categories but, is an excellent mod for categories the way you want them. The more parts you add to the game the more this mod becomes necessary.
  16. My half brother(more than 20 years younger than me) was visiting and we ended up talking about video games and rockets. He had told me about KSP and I knew I must check it out. After downloading it from steam, I played for hours. How many? I honestly do not know. But, I can tell you, my wife would burn down Squad HQ and delete every copy of the game if she could.
  17. I'd buy right now for twice the price if I could and my wife couldn't stop me. I do hope, though, Squad gives enough time and info to modders so they can get started early. I want to play with the new things but there are some mods I just don't want to do without.
  18. Just timed it. 2 minutes 38 seconds with 73 mods. Thats loaded off an M.2 SSD. The same mod stack loaded off my last computer(SATA3.0 drives) was in the area of 5-6 minutes.
  19. I would immediately go to the nearest store and buy a mouse that functioned. Of course, I also have a closet full of random computer parts and probably have whatever my computer needs if it was an emergency. Not being able to operate my computer would qualify as an emergency to me. It is, after all, my primary source of entertainment because my daughter has learned to operate netflix on my 60 inch.
  20. Today the Kraken ate my interplanetary ship and my Mun refinery base so I had to make replacements. I shaved nearly 100 parts off of the refinery, which was sorely needed. And, I am quite pleased with the interplanetary ship. It has over 18km/s dV and a TWR of 1.21. The 5 reactors can actually keep up with the 4 vista engines but, surprisingly enough, they can't keep up with the arcjet RCS system. I can only burn RCS of 5 out of every 8 seconds before the power runs dry but, learning to coast turn a 1400 ton ship is edifying. The base uses ore, regolith, and hydrates to produce oxidiser, liquid fuel, methane, oxygen, and hydrogen. This behemoth is sitting high in minmus orbit waiting on Val to arrive with a landing craft and 66 days to pass for the Duna transfer window. But, with 18km/s dV, I really don't have to wait for the window.
  21. That and I roleplay the idea of having living space and recreation areas aboard any long mission ships or bases. So, I may have capacity on any given ship for 50 or more but I might only have 10 or so kerbals on it.
  22. After the Eve mission, I started a retrofit of my interplanetary ship. I added a ring and changed the entire RCS system to hydrazine. I cut off the engine section and added a docking port back there for the new power section which will include new tech like fusion reactors and twin vista fusion drives. Making that ring with as few parts as possible was a pain and didn't turn out exactly circular but it looks and works ok.
